The Chimney Rock Hawk Watch
2011
2011 marked the 22nd consecutive operational year of the Chimney Rock Hawkwatch, and it was very impressive indeed with 13,011 birds of prey recorded during the 76day season which ran September 1st through November 15th. This season’s total represents the 3rd highest we have recorded in ten years at Chimney Rock. To be sure, it was another great season with two new all-time single day records set for Osprey (128 recorded on 9/30/11), and Sharpshins (447 recorded on 10/22/11). If those single totals were not enough – consider this: in the period from 9/29 – 10/3/11, we recorded 218 Ospreys in just 5 days! Want more perspective? 535 Ospreys were recorded for the whole season – more than 40% of the season total was recorded in that 5 day period. I think you would agree that there is not much more that can be said except maybe “WOW”! Hard to believe, but could lightning strike twice in one season – indeed so. As the third week of October approached the conditions became optimum for a strong accipiter flight. “Strong” turned out to be too mild a word for what did occur. Not only did we have the previously mentioned record flight of 447 on 10/22/11, but in the span of 10/20 - 10/25/11 we recorded 945 Sharpshins and 80 Cooper’s hawks – over 1000 accipiters in a 6 day period! I think you get the idea – it was hard to not look up during that period and not see an accipiter in the air. As you can see from the cover – hawks themselves were not the only topic on the agenda this past year. Indeed, as we look to the future of the Chimney Rock Hawk Watch it has been my goal for some time now to recruit and train the next generation of hawkwatchers. Indeed the past two years have produced approximately 6 new people who have made our hawkwatch “line-up” that much stronger. Yet, with all of our success, I have always felt that we needed to reach the younger generation. This is easier said than done of course, as contrary to what one may think – there really are not many young people out there with an interest in birding – never mind an interest in hawkwatching! So having 5 active young “recruits” up at the watch this past season training and assisting on a regular basis was to me and I think everyone else, a great success. I am honored to say that they will be back again to continue “learning the ropes” as well as outright assist with the hawkwatch. I really do look forward to their enthusiasm and motivation again this coming season. I look forward to seeing you in September 2012 up at “the Rock”. Chris Aquila

*Mylar balloons pose a serious threat to marine wildlife.Prevailing westerly winds carry most of these balloons out over the ocean where theygradually decend to the water's surface and are mistaken as a food source. The unsuspecting wildlife eventually succumbs as the nondeteriorating mylarentangles itself in the organism's digestive tract.
