JANUARY 17TH COLONY MINUTES - (CONTINUED)

The next scheduled meeting will be a cookout on March 28, 2015 at Spruce Creek South.NOTE: The next Colony Meeting will be September 26, 2015 in the Jefferson Room at Laurel ManorNOTE: The State Meeting will be held at The Waterfront Inn at The Villages on November 20 & 21 2015. Surgeon General Dr. George Garmany will be the keynote speaker. The Benediction was given by Elder Beverly Hulett.Respectfully SubmittedBarbara A. Bateman, Secretary

Note: During the roll call at future colony meetings, any Mayflower Society member (including junior members) who is a descendant of any Mayflower passenger can raise their hand and be counted whether you have a membership certificate for that passenger or not.  The Chilton Colony realizes many of our members have more than one descendant and do not have membership certificates for each of them. Recognizing each of our descendants during roll call is a way to honor their memory and is representative of our Pilgrim spirit and a way to share our common heritage.  We hope this clears up any confusion there may have been in the past."

MEMBER PROFILE

Beverly Jane Oviatt, with a surname that jumps off the page, was bor n to re search f ami l i e s . What an exciting thing to do! She is a native of PA, a product o f parents whose ancestors found the i r way to Ne w England very early, in every ancestral line but her maternal grandmother. As a result she has found numerous cousins, just in The Villages alone. Since the advent of cyber research she has increased her identified ancestor number to more than 1300.

She was responsible for starting a genealogical society in 1993 with twelve or so members that has grown into the 975+ member Villages Genealogical Society. A charter member of the Puc Puggy DAR Chapter , the Timucua Colonial Dames XVII Century Chapter, the William Mullins and the James Chilton Mayflower Society Colonies, Bev is definitely a proponent of lineage societies. Concerned that she wouldn’t have time to participate in the (then) 208 available activities in The Villages, Bev has enjoyed many of them in 23 years of Villages residency.

She is the mother of four, grandmother of 11 and great-grand of almost four. Her life work was in health care, mostly respiratory therapy.

Remembering two research excursions, she writes:

“As the family genealogist, long before I knew of a Mayflower connection, I wanted to do some research in the Library of Congress. I was hesitant about going alone in the mid 1970’s. Knowing that my niece had an interest in family history, I asked her if she would go with me. She kindly agreed and we set forth one spring day in my little Ford Fiesta, having the trip thoroughly mapped. I had my personal list of our surnames

found in the publication “Genealogies in the Library of Congress.”

When we reached our goal, I pulled up behind the U.S. Capitol but couldn’t find a parking space. Imagine that!!

A Capitol policeman came to the car window to see just what the problem was. I explained we had come to do research in the Library of Congress and I needed a place to park. He groaned, then his eyes lit up and he told me to pull in “that” space. It was designated “Reserved for Senate Chaplain”. I expressed concern, but he assured me the chaplain had gone for the day and it would be fine. I asked for his name and badge # in case I found a citation under my windshield wiper when we returned. I guess if the car had not been so small my niece would have slithered down, out of sight, totally embarrassed.

So we had our fine, successful adventure of discovery and disappointment, finding new ancestors, not finding others. By 4 or 5 p.m. we were ready to go home. I was still fearful that we’d be cited for illegal parking when we reached the car. We walked outside into a deluge, a downpour that had the car windows all steamed up and any possible citation long washed away.

I still wonder how that Capitol policeman marked our car as “two ninnies from Pennsylvania who thought they could pull into the Library of Congress and find a parking space waiting for them because they wanted to do some genealogy research.”

In the late 70’s I invited my eighty-ish mother to accompany me on a research trip to Orange County, NY.   Her Mather ancestors had migrated there from New England, stayed about a hundred years then moved west to Indiana when bounty land from the War of 1812 made that a desirable thing to do.

MEMBER PROFILE - CONTINUED

On another adventure I started off with reference to a will in the surrogate’s office at the courthouse in Goshen, NY, a picture of the Sayre home in Westtown as well as the Mather Genealogy, written in 1890.   Thus armed, we arrived in Orange County Sunday afternoon, and immediately found the Sayre house and the Minisink Cemetery.  I love this area… there are p laces ca l l ed Ne vers ink , Mini s ink , and Waywayunder, well,  Wawayanda. There in Minisink Cemetery were the headstones of Jonathan Sayer and wives. (..Aha… my gr-grandfather was Jonathan Sayre Mather….  file that away).  We had dinner that evening with the mother of my son’s college roommate who informed me her good friend and dentist was a Dr. Sayre and she thought he had a genealogy of the Sayre family.  (Things were looking up, and by the time we got home, a copy arrived, completing my Melissa Sayre line back to 1580’s England).

Early Monday morning we went to the old courthouse which now housed the historical society.  “CLOSED ON MONDAYS” the sign said, but a gentleman chatting with friends at the end of the hall approached and asked if he could be of help.  When I explained our mission, he told me he was Harold Jonas, a retired history professor, past president of the historical society, and he had a private library larger than the historical society.  He would take us to his home and we could work as long as we chose.   (Sure….)  We thanked him but said we’d do our searches at the new courthouse across the green and then head back to PA.  He insisted he would meet us at the courthouse in an hour and take us home.  We plotted to do our work in 45 minutes and quickly skedaddle, in case he did appear.   However the records were so replete that when we had made all our copies…He was waiting.

He took my mother by the arm and said, “Mama goes with me.”  (She went!!)  He helped her into his white Ford Bronco and I gave chase in my littleFiesta.  (This was before the televised O.J. Bronco chase).  Through the streets of Goshen, out of town, up a mountain road, onto a deserted gravel road, we finally emerged at the top of a mountain.

There was his home, a beautifully restored log cabin attached to a lovely large home, with rooms and rooms of floor-to-ceiling loaded bookshelves.  In the log cabin he also had a unique collection of the wishbone or clavicles of a hundred or more birds,  from hummingbird to ostrich, as well as a large bird feeding disk that he raised by pulley to his wife’s second story bedroom  window every morning…  he even took us to her room to demonstrate…!

He brought us tea and cookies, pulled every local history and genealogy book we requested and set us to work.  Long before scanners and copiers, we furiously transcribed for several hours.  He re-appeared and said he and his wife had a meeting, but we were welcome to continue working and leave whenever we were finished.  Unbelievable!

I thanked him and told him we were just finished.  I asked to follow him down the mountain, since I was now lost, and that he point us in the direction of I-84 (no GPS in the 70’s).  He not only took us to I-84 he got on the interstate himself and accompanied us as far as the next exit.

This genealogy trip restored my faith in mankind, or at least one very kind man.

I would like to thank Bev Hulett for taking the time to pull the above together. If anyone else has something to share, please send me an email and include your story.

2015 ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP DUES ARE CURRENTLY DUE

Dear Colony members:

Our Colony Treasurer and State Governor, Ken Carter, would like to remind all members annual dues for 2015 are payable now.

If members do not pay dues by November they risk being dropped from the rolls of the Mayflower Society at the State’s November annual meeting.

Dues notices normally go out early in the year for which they are due, and there are usually no follow-ups.  It is up to members to pay the $30 promptly. Each member working with the Colony Historian put in a lot of work for applicants to become members in our great Society and we hate to see a member dropped.

As an alternative, if the cost of membership is a burden, we recommend members pay their dues up - to -date and request a ho ld on the i r membership.  Then when the member again desire to be active, they can ask to be reinstated by paying the then current dues.  Once a member is dropped from the rolls for non-payment, to be reinstated later would require refil ing for membership all over again.

If a member wishes to join another State Society; they can, by bringing dues up to date, request transfer of membership to another State Society by

contacting that State’s Historian for information and details.

The key is not to let a membership lapse without exploring other alternatives.  Colony Historians, Governors and other officers are available to help.  Therefore, unless a member really want to resign from the Mayflower Society, they should promptly send payment for 2015 dues.

Dues should be made payable to The Chilton Colony. Annual dues currently amount to $30. Send to:

Ken Carter, Treasurer1202 Arriago WayThe Villages, FL  32162

If a member would l ike to suspend their membership, they should pay 2015 dues of $30 and request Ken Carter to suspend their membership at this time.

If a member intends to transfer membership to another state, they should pay the current dues and advise Ken Carter and Shirley Smith at this time.

Please Email the editor ([email protected]) if you need further understanding or information and I will share your message with the appropriate individuals. You worked too hard to obtain this membership, please don’t allow it to expire.
