    ost Chilean holidays center around religious celebrations. Asmost people are Roman Catholic, the important observances

    are around Christmas and Easter. New Years Eve is celebrated

    everywhere.

    y Independence Day is a national holiday which features picnicsand folk dancing. On this day the public parks are filled with

    stands called Fondas, decorated with leaves. drinks made of

    fermented grapes are served

    y A national custom dictates the visiting of graves of relatives onNovember 1, All Saints Day.

    Chile Dance

    y Chile's national dance is the cueca. You will see the

    dance performed at every important festival in Chile,

    and especially on the Chilean National Day on the 18th

    of September. Dancers dress in the traditional costumes

    of the Chilean huaso and wave their white handkerchiefs

    in the air.

    Tipping

    y A 10 percent service charge is usually added to checks in

    restaurants, and it is customary to tip an additional 10

    percent. A tip of 20 percent is customary in bars where

    service has not been added to the bill.

    y Taxi drivers do not expect tips unless special services have

    been performed. Some service people, such as garbage

    collectors, doormen and deliverymen expect tips at holiday

    times: September 18 for the national holiday; and again atChristmas. Gas station attendants, movie theater ushers, and

    other service attendants will expect a 10 to 20 peso tip.

    Dining Etiquette

    . Dining etiquette can be quite formal in Chile.. Here are some basic dining etiquette guidelines:-When sitting wait to be shown to your place.-Women sit before men.-The hostess invites people to eat.- Keep your hands visible when eating. Keep your wrists resting on theedge of the table.- Always use utensils to eat.- Avoid speaking with eating utensils in your hands.- It is considered polite to finish everything on your plate.

    -Wait for a toast to be made before taking the first sip of your drink.-The host makes the first toast.-The most common toast is "Salud!"-When you lift your glass, look at the person being toasted.- Pour wine with the right hand only.

    . Chileans like an element of formality in all they do.

    .A firm handshake accompanied with a smile and appropriate greeting is

    normal in a business setting.

    . Direct eye contact is important.

    . Some women may not shake hands with men, although this is

    becoming less common.

    . Chileans stand very close when conversing.

    .Always use surnames and titles - wait to be invited to use someone's

    first name.. Business cards are exchanged on the initial meeting at the very start.

    .Try and have one side translated into Spanish

    . Keep cards in good condition - a tatty card will reflect badly on you.

    yAppearances are an important part of Chilean life so makesure you dress well.

    y Dress codes are generally formal and conservative; suit and

    tie for men and discreet business suit (skirt or trousers) for

    women. Navy blue suits seem to dominate and men tend toput on their jackets when leaving the office, even if it is just

    for lunch.

    y Though dressing well is the norm, more and more companies

    are adopting the system of wearing casual clothes on Fridays.Business attire becomes less formal in the regions of the

    country and in certain sectors.

    y Secretaries and clerks in large companies usually wear

    uniforms.

    should be used to build a relationship and establish trust.Devote time to non-business discussions and wait for theother party to initiate the change in topic.

    2. Pay attention to hand movements - gestures change inmeaning across cultures.

    3. It is common to interrupt someone while they are speaking.

    4. Meetings are not always linear in their progression. Schedulesare not very structured and issues can be tackled all at thesame time.

    5. It is important to be patient as time is not of the essence in

    Chile - meetings will last as long as they need to last.6. Chileans are generally indirect in their communication styles,

    BusinessMeetings in Chiley

    Most business meetings begin with a handshake (regardlessof the gender) especially in first meetings. As the business

    relationship develops, both parts become more

    demonstrative which can include the kissing on the cheek

    with women and sometimes embracing between men.

    y Business cards are given after the initial handshake.

    Chileans put a lot of importance on their positions in

    companies. Chileans use two surnames on business cards -the father's first and then the mother's. When addressing the

    person, use only the father's surname.

    Chileans will normally start with polite social chat and

    will often ask about your family. They are not being

    nosey, just showing a general interest in you. It is polite

    to ask about their family too

    y If there is time, it is often good to bring up topics like

    Chilean wine and the natural beauties of Chile. If you

    can show that you know or have learnt something aboutChile, it will be appreciated and will give them the

    opportunity to feel good about their country.
