Children’s Special Health Services (CSHS)

CSHS is a division in the Community Health Section of the North Dakota Department of Health

CSHS is the designated Title V CSHCN program for the MCH Block Grant

CSHS Mission:Improve Children’s Health

CSHS provides services for children with special health care needs and their families

CSHS promotes family-centered, community-based, coordinated services and systems of health care

General CSHS Eligibility

Age - child must be birth to age 21 yearsResidency - child must be a ND residentSpecial Health Care Need - child must

have a chronic condition and require health and related services beyond that needed by most children

Specialty Care Diagnostic & Treatment Program

CSHS provides payment for covered services

Families apply for services at their county social service office

Medical eligibility for diagnostic and treatment services is based on a list of approved conditions

Financial eligibility for treatment services is 185% of the FPL

Families must use qualified providers that participate in the CSHS program

Multidisciplinary Clinic Program

Metabolic disorders Cerebral palsy Developmental Myelodysplasia Diabetes Neurorehabilitation Asthma Autism Cleft lip/palate Cardiac program

Clinics support coordinated management of chronic health conditions

Any child who might benefit can attend

Team evaluations are provided

Reports include recommendations to help direct care

An annual clinic directory is available

Care Coordination Program

Care coordination increases access to services and resources.

County social service staff coordinate care for children who are eligible for CSHS treatment services.

A public health nurse coordinates care for additional children in Grand Forks county.

State CSHS staff also provide care coordination support for children and their families who contact the state office.

Metabolic Food Program

CSHS provides medical food and low-protein modified food products to individuals with PKU and MSUD

Russell Silver Syndrome Program

To enroll, individuals must have Russell Silver Syndrome and be birth through 18 years of age

CSHS pays for growth hormone treatment and medical food

CSHS provides the following public information services:

State Systems Development Initiative (SSDI)

CSHS administers the State Systems Development Initiative (SSDI) grant.

The purpose of SSDI is to develop, enhance, and expand State Title V Maternal and Child Health (MCH) data capacity.

Improved data capacity supports effective, efficient and quality programming for women, infants, children and youth, including children and youth with special health care needs in North Dakota.

ASD Database

In 2013, the legislature passed HB 1038, a comprehensive bill that addressed autism spectrum disorders in ND.

Within the DoH, CSHS administers an ASD database that includes records of all reported cases of ASD in North Dakota.
