What are Children’s Rights?

Children’s rights are defined by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. There are three categories of rights:

Rights of provision. › Ex., education and health care.

Rights of protection.› Ex., protection from abuse and neglect.

Rights of participation.› Ex., the right to be heard in matters affecting the

child.

In order to inform children about their rights

children’s rights practicum provides adults; parents, teachers and researchers who are engaged with children & children’s studies a way that underscores the individuality and authenticity of a child

It is reinforced by the government, society and individuals

The goal: teach children about children’s rights in order to empower them

There are different methods such as arts, literature, etc… to achieve the goal

Aim to let children use critical thinking, self reflection in the process of learning

Using dialogue and promote problem-posing teaching/learning method

Main Principles of the CRC: Four main principles instilled:

› The best interests principle. The Convention requires that the primary consideration in decision-making about children shall be in the child’s best interests.

› Non-discrimination. All children must be provided with equal opportunity for healthy development.

› Importance of family. The Convention supports the importance of the family to the child, parental authority and parental guidance.

› Participation. Children must be given a voice in all matters that affect them in accordance with their age and maturity.

• The aim is to ensure the best circumstances are availabe for child’s development.

understand the individual (in this case the child) and not simply making assumption and stereotypes

Praxis- its about the practical application of the theories and literature read about children’s rights› Gives children an opportunity and a space in

society because they are often marginalized Hear the authentic voice of the child Promote UN Convention on the Rights of

the Child› Increase awareness about the CRC and its

intensions.
