Children will be children - pushing boundaries and taking

risks…

At a public swimming pool we have gates, have lifeguards and shallow ends, but we also teach children how to swim.

8The padlock is to remind our

children to set strong passwords

and to set up passcode locks on

all of their digital devices. "Lock

'em down" as we like to say in

our Digital Citizenship lessons.

Say to your child, imagine having the mirror attached to your computer/device. If you looked in it and saw someone in the reflection, would they approve of what you are doing or saying online?

Take a sheet of paper and

hand it to your child

instructing them to wad it up

into a ball. Tell your child

to throw it on the

ground....stomp on it. Have

your child pick up the piece

of paper and unravel it.

12

Tell your child that ruined the piece

of paper to apologize to the piece of

paper for destroying it. Tell your

child that the piece of paper

represents someones heart that has

been cyberbullied. We can apologize

all we want, but the emotional scars

that remain inside DON'T go away.

okay to "unplug" (unplug as

you are discussing). We

don't have to be connected

all the time! Get outside and be a kid!

8 Tips to keep on top of your child’s screen time ▹ Lead by example - reduce your own screen time.

▹ Agree on daily screen time limits. It’s not about punishment, it’s about keeping a balance.

▹ Start with small reductions to help lessen any resistance.

▹ Resist giving mobile devices to children when going out – take books or toys instead.

▹ Set tech-free zones and times at home – e.g. all screens off in bedrooms after a specified time.

▹ Use tech tools to manage access, such as parental controls.

▹ Be involved – watch TV and play games together.

▹ Plan screen-free time, like outdoor play, music and sport.

The amount of information on the internet

is amazing! As digital citizens, your

children have to be good at "straining" out

the bad stuff, what is real, what's not and

finding material that is applicable to their search/use of the internet.

18A tattoo is permanent, much like the information we post online. The photos we share, the comments we write, the videos we 'like'. Even if we delete them, they may still be out there – saved and shared by others, or even kept by the site or app itself.

Too many times children are

messaging, posting, tweeting,

retweeting, snapping information

that is NOT appropriate. Remind

your child to keep it clean!

the things they do while

online. Now imagine if it were

kept in a journal. Would they be

comfortable if anyone could read that journal?

mistakes. The mistakes kids make

today will be

GOOGLEABLE. Hopefully their

mistakes won't be too big. If a
