The Chikungunya epidemic A double impact
The Shock The Check
Take away messages • As predicted, the first autochthonous transmission of the CHIK virus in
the Americas has been explosive;• All countries with previous history of Dengue transmission are at risk
depending of entomological indices and climatological factors;• Clinical Case Management and Laboratory procedures are different
from Dengue, Surveillance need some fine tuning, all other Dengue strategy components are the same (IVM, Environmental management, Social Communication);
• However we anticipate co circulation of Dengue and CHIK;• CHIK will have a double impact on health services delivery: 1. first
wave of acute cases and sub acute cases and 2. chronic cases………
• At the present time, the capacity of response of the countries / territories has not been surpassed.
