Second Harvest Heartland

ORGANIZATIONAL OVERVIEW Second Harvest Heartland (SHH) is one of the nation’s largest, most efficient and most innovative hunger relief organizations. Leveraging its unique position in the emergency food chain to make an impact, SHH has partnered with community-based organizations, government and corporations to create a sustainable support system that provides access to food to our community. Working with a wide network of service delivery partners, volunteers and donors, SHH’s 100,000+ square feet of dry, refrigerator and freezer space is constantly accepting and distributing donations. Its fleet of trucks travels nearly half a million miles a year, picking up food donations and delivering them to local food shelves, homeless shelters, senior community centers and children’s feeding programs. SHH also operates innovative programs directly supporting neighbors in need. SHH is a member of Feeding America—the nationwide network of more than 200 foodbanks serving every state in the United States. This partnership helps to significantly amplify the organization’s impact and reach by providing access to millions of pounds of surplus food and grocery donations.

ORGANIZATIONAL OVERVIEW HISTORY ~ SHH was created on October 1, 2001, when Second Harvest Greater Minneapolis and Second Harvest St. Paul joined forces to bring together more than 44 years of combined history and experience to the fight against hunger.

SIZE ~ SHH is a $150 million organization employing 170 FTE’s and 30,000 volunteers annually.

LOCATION~ SHH’s currently operates out of two facilities, including its primary distribution site and headquarters in Maplewood, MN as well as a leased volunteer service center in Golden Valley. SHH has just purchased a new 230,000 sq. ft. warehouse in Brooklyn Park to house its future headquarters and distribution, though we will maintain a service and volunteer facility in the East Metro.

SHH’s IMPACT~ SHH’s work is about more than moving food. It’s about making families whole again – making sure kids have the food they need to learn in school, relieving the stress of an empty cupboard for parents, or giving seniors a little bit more so they can stretch their dollars every month. In 2016, SHH delivered more than 80 million meals to nearly 1,000 food shelves, pantries and other partner programs serving 59 counties in Minnesota and western Wisconsin serving up hope – and health – along with our food.

STRATEGIC PLAN~ Second Harvest Heartland’s strategic plan is built around three priorities:

Feed – providing meals for neighbors in need today, but also developing programs that provide food stability and security to keep people out of emergency need

Lead – provide data and direction to our partners, donors, and officials who want to know what works in this community’s anti-hunger efforts

Strengthen – invest in a strong and growing organization, as well as a robust network of partners to make a lasting impact in food security for families right here

CAPITAL CAMPAIGN~ A key component of our strategic plan, “Fueling The Future” is SHH’s investment in a new facility and associated programs that will allow us to safely distribute more nutritious meals (with an emphasis on produce), radically reduce child hunger in Minnesota, improve our efficiency and employ more volunteers in our work.

SERVICES PROVIDED ~ As one of the nation’s largest and most efficient food banks, SHH collects and distributes food through a variety of programs and services, including:

Retail Rescue – over 35% of our food is captured from more than 400 grocery stores through a highly efficient system of logistics and partnerships, most of it fresh fruits and vegetables, dairy and protein

Agricultural Products – through private support and funding from the state of MN, SHH sources tens of millions of pounds of food that might otherwise go to waste. SHH also houses and leads a regional produce co-op, nationally sourcing fruits and vegetables for use by 17 peer food banks across 7 states

Food+You – SHH works with nearly 20 low-income schools to surround families with food security through on-site meals and with local partner food shelves

FoodRx – SHH has expanded its work to multiple hospitals, including current clinical trials with health care providers to support healthy diets that allow low-income neighbors to avoid costly diet-driven illnesses like diabetes and heart disease.

presenting the position of

Chief Operations and Program Officer

POSITION OVERVIEW Reporting to the President/CEO, the Chief Operations and Programs Officer (COPO) serves on the Executive Leadership Team and works collaboratively with the CFO and Chief Philanthropy Officer. The COPO is the senior position responsible for driving and overseeing all end-to-end sourcing and distribution of meals to our community, including partner relations and programs. The COPO is also responsible for leading growth initiatives and executing the strategic plans of the organization. The COPO is responsible for the development of sustainable, effective business processes and organizational learning to drive business excellence. She/he will assist in raising the skills and abilities of staff at all levels to use continuous improvement strategies and techniques. The COPO will support excellence in SHH’s core business operations and must be a creative, strategic thinker to incorporate new initiatives into their work. The position must hire and support exceptional staff to manage the largest part of Second Harvest Heartland’s business. The COPO has accountability for $100 million of the annual budget with 7 direct reports and overall responsibility for approximately 100 employees. The COPO will oversee all operating divisions, including field services, transportation, food sourcing and food bank operations. The COPO will have a multi-faceted mandate. Charged with overseeing many of the operational aspects of the organization, the new executive will have significant responsibility for the very heart of the organization, providing the executional capabilities that will turn the strategic plan from a board-mandated aspiration into working reality. There are several key components: 1. PREPARE THE ORGANIZATION FOR VASTLY INCREASED DEMAND

SHH is proud of its reputation for operational excellence, and it remains committed to practicing and even creating best practices to ensure more hungry people have more access to more nutritious meals. Working closely with the leadership team and community of partners throughout SHH’s 59-county service area and beyond, the COPO must help SHH drive more nutritious meals through multiple program channels to meet its neighbors’ needs and consider transformational opportunities to improve service and efficiency as demand grows and changes.

2. SUPPORT END-TO-END QUALITY IN OPERATIONS, PROGRAMS AND CUSTOMER SERVICE

SHH serves nearly 1000 local “retail” partners (food shelves, meal programs, shelters) but also operates innovative programming that supports its neighbors directly. While “wholesaling” remains the largest segment of SHH’s business, the COPO will need to

prioritize excellent partner relationships and service, as well devise and integrate new partnerships, including schools and health care organizations, as appropriate.

This leader must exude SHH values and support a staff culture of excellence and inclusivity that places the client at the center of SHH’s work, balancing an environment that is simultaneously demanding and supportive, efficient and compassionate. The new leader will work across multiple departments and organizations and must also continue to attract and retain an exceptionally talented and diverse staff.

Twin Cities ~ Minneapolis and Saint Paul

Incorporated as a city in 1867, Minneapolis is named for the Dakota word “Minne” (meaning “of the waters”) and the Greek word “polis” (meaning “city”); fitting for a town that contains 22 lakes. Today, Minneapolis and its twin city, St. Paul, have over 3 million residents. Together they make up the 14th largest metropolitan area in the country. The Twin Cities of Saint Paul and Minneapolis are a unique blend of small town and major cosmopolitan hub. Both urban cores boast a thriving business atmosphere. Saint Paul, as the state capital, is home to state government and has a more historical vibe. Minneapolis is the larger and more commercial of the two cities. Outside of the central downtowns, however, both cities have many distinct neighborhoods, and residents identify more with their individual neighborhood than with the larger city as a whole.

Both cities share a common root of being river towns - and the great outdoors are still a major attraction for residents and visitors alike. In addition to the mighty Mississippi River, there are more than 100 lakes (more than 900 when including the suburbs), more than 250 parks, and miles of biking and walking trails.

Nearly every weekend in the summer there are several outdoor active events for participants and spectators—triathlons, biking races, running races, boat races, water skiing competitions, golf tournaments, and more. Neighborhood events and family events round out a full schedule of opportunities.

Twin Cities ~ Minneapolis and Saint Paul

The active lifestyle of Twin Cities’ residents doesn't lie dormant during the winter either. There are miles of cross-country skiing trails, several downhill ski areas within an hour’s drive, ice skating, snowmobile riding, sledding, and—of course—ice fishing. For those who prefer activity of the spectator variety, the Twin Cities is home to several major sports teams: Minnesota Twins, Minnesota Vikings, Minnesota Wild, Minnesota Timberwolves, Minnesota Lynx, Minnesota United FC (soccer), and Minnesota Swarm (lacrosse). There is also a minor league baseball team, the Saint Paul Saints. The areas have hosted the World Series, Super Bowl, NCAA Basketball Finals, the USGA U. S. Open, PGA Championships and the Special Olympics. In 2014, Target Field was the setting for baseball's All- star Game. In 2018, the Super Bowl will be played in a newly built state-of-the-art stadium.

But the Twin Cities have more to offer than participatory and spectator sporting events. There are countless arts and culture offerings here. The Grammy Award-winning Minnesota Orchestra has a reputation as one of the top orchestras in the world. The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra is regarded as one of the finest chamber orchestras in the world. Since the early 1960s, the Guthrie Theatre has staged A-plus shows from the classical to the contemporary. Popular national shows and performers also tour through the Twin Cities year round at stages in both Minneapolis and Saint Paul, and at the University. There are over 30 theatre venues, 10 dance companies, and 30 classical music groups in the cities of Saint Paul and Minneapolis alone.

Twin Cities ~ Minneapolis and Saint Paul

For the museum-goer, there are more than 60 museums in the Twin Cities. The Science Museum of Minnesota and the Minnesota Children's Museum (both in Saint Paul) are highly interactive learning and fun experiences for the entire family. The Minnesota History Center is an interactive museum for all ages with permanent and changing exhibits, lectures and events.

The Minneapolis Institute of Arts has a collection of more than 100,000 pieces. The Walker Art Center has been called “possibly the best contemporary art museum in the U. S.” by Newsweek, and has over 11,000 pieces. The University of Minnesota's Weisman Art Museum is also a contemporary art destination. Beyond the outdoor, sports, entertainment, and culture, perhaps the biggest attraction for the Twin Cities is the lifestyle. Forbes hailed Saint Paul and Minneapolis as the nation's healthiest cities. USA Today named Saint Paul as North America's “Most Romantic City.” The Twin Cities offer award-winning restaurants (several chefs have been regional James Beard Award winners). In addition to the popular Mall of America, there are plenty of unique shopping districts in both cities and in the suburbs.
