Hiding mountain of truth with bushes of lies: Naqvi on anti-CAA protests MUMBAI, Dec 28: Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi today said that those opposing the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and National Register of Citizens were trying to hide a "mountain of truth with bushes of lies". Addressing a press conference here as part of the BJP's awareness campaign over the contentious CAA and NRC, he also said that Muslims were not living in India out of "compulsion" but due to their "commitment to national- ism". "Some people with narrow political interests are spreading disinformation among a particular section of society on the CAA, NRC and National Population Register and trying to hide a mountain of truth with bushes of lies," he said. There is no threat to the citi- zenship of any Indian Muslim from the CAA, NRC or any other law, he said. "The Narendra Modi Government is working towards development without discrimina- tion," the Union minister for minority affairs said. Prime Minister Modi has made it clear that CAA was brought in to give citizenship (to persecuted minorities from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan) and not take it away from existing citi- zens, Naqvi said. The NRC conducted in Assam was limited to that State, and the exercise would not pose any threat to Indian Muslims, he said. Muslims from other countries could obtain citizenship under the Citizenship Act even before the amendment, he said. While Pakistan is "hell for minorities, India is heaven", he said, adding that this reality was unacceptable to "divisive forces out to weaken the country". Asked about a police official in Meerut in Uttar Pradesh reported- ly asking anti-CAA protesters to "go to Pakistan", Naqvi said action should be taken against the official if it was found to be true. On a question on RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat calling all 130 crore Indians as "Hindus", the minister said, "when two lakh (Indian) people go for Haj, they are called Hindi". (PTI) Chidambaram says Army chief should ‘mind his business’ THIRUVANATHAPURAM/ HYDERABAD, Dec 28: Army Chief Bipin Rawat today received more flak from opposition parties for criticising people leading protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), with senior Congress leader P Chidambaram saying it is not the business of the Army to tell politicians what they should do and the General should “mind his business.” Attacking Rawat over his remarks, CPI (M) general secre- tary Sitaram Yechury said it was politicisation of the armed forces and warned that if the “dangerous trend” continues it will be “like the role of Army in Pakistan”. They were reacting to Rawat’s remarks made at a health summit on Thursday. “Leaders are not those who lead people in inappropriate directions, as we are witnessing in a large number of university and college students, the way they are leading masses of crowds to carry out arson and violence in our cities and towns. This is not leadership,” the Army Chief had said. After Rawat’s remarks trig- gered a storm, Army had issued a clarification, saying the Army Chief has not referred to the CAA. “He has not referred to any political event, personality. He was addressing the future citizens of India who are students. (It is his) righteous duty to guide stu- dents on whom shall depend the future of the Nation. In Kashmir valley, youths were misguided the first, by people whom they trusted as leaders,” the Army statement said. However, Chidambaram was critical of Rawat’s remarks. “Now, the Army General is being asked to speak up. Is it the job of the Army General? The DGP... The Army General are being asked to support the gov- ernment. It is a shame. Let me appeal to General Rawat.... You head the Army and mind your business... What politicians will do, politicians will do,” the for- mer union minister said. “It is not the business of the Army to tell politicians what we should do. Just as it is not our business to tell you how to fight a war. You fight war according to your ideas and we will man- age the politics of the country,” he said. He was speaking at a rally against the new Act organised by Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) in front of Raj Bhavan in Thiruvanant- hapuram. Taking strong exception to Rawat’s comments on “domestic politics”, Yechury said that it had happened “for the first time in independent India”. (PTI) Talk of superiority in terms of birth in Hindu society not right: Suresh Joshi NEW DELHI/MANGALURU, Dec 28: RSS executive head Suresh (Bhaiyyaji) Joshi today told Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) office bearers that the talk of superiority in terms of birth in Hindu society is not right and efforts should be made to build a harmonious society. Joshi, the Sarkaryavah of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), said people's values have eroded and there is an indiffer- ence towards the motherland. Speaking at the meeting of the central management commit- tee and the board of trustees of Vishwa Hindu Parishad in Mangaluru, he said Hindus should be empowered, cultured and awakened Asserting that Hindus should be gentlemanly, self-respecting, honourable and full of scientific temper, Joshi said, "There should be such active Hindus who are able to lead the world by building a flawless organised power." He also said that the talk of superiority in terms of birth in Hindu society today is not right because a person is superior on the basis of karma. He said that for them cow protection is not only animal pro- tection and added that the issue of Shri Ram Janmabhoomi is a matter of self-respect for us. On the second day of the meeting, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad resolved to create a strong and self-supporting India. Expressing concern over the increasing rapes and other crimes against women in the country, the VHP passed a resolution saying parents, academics, seers, social organisations, media and enter- tainment world will have to come forward along with a campaign to stop such crimes and change atti- tudes towards women safety.
