CHICKEN, WAFFLES & WI-FI?
or DESIGNING WI-FI THAT REALLY WORKS FOR TODAY & TOMORROW
2© 2015 XIRRUS :: All Rights Reserved
Exact origins of this dish are unknown, several theories exist.
One theory - waffles entered American cuisine in the 1790s after Thomas
Jefferson’s purchase of a waffle iron from France. Fried chicken was a
common breakfast meat, and serving a breakfast bread with whatever
meat was available was a rural tradition.
Modern version of the meal is from the African-American community in
Harlem in the 1930s - in such locations as Tillie's Chicken Shack, Dickie
Wells' jazz nightclub and particularly the Wells Supper Club.
Harlem-style chicken and waffles have been popular in Los Angeles
since the 1970s due to the fame of former Harlem resident Herb
Hudson's restaurant Roscoe's House of Chicken and Waffles, which is
known as a favorite of Hollywood celebrities and been referenced in
several movies.

WI-FI GROWTH
6© 2015 XIRRUS :: All Rights Reserved
• 6.5 Million Wi-Fi devices ship every day
• Jan 1 2015 – 10 Billionth Wi-Fi device shipped
• 2 Billion applications are downloaded every week
• 4.5 Billion non-11ac devices are still in use every day
• Usage has shifted from basic data to streaming video
And it’s just going to get worse!
WI-FI’s GROWING CHALLENGE
7© 2015 XIRRUS :: All Rights Reserved
The explosion of Wi-Fi-enabled devices has
challenged hotel operators and their business
investment strategies.
Hotels are trying to balance rising guest
expectations with anticipated long- term needs in an
continually changing environment.
But Wi-Fi requirements vary for guest rooms, public
areas and conference spaces, one size does not fit
all.
WI-FI’S HOSPITALITY CHALLENGE

• Why are my GSS scores for Wi-Fi lower?
• Why do we have new Wi-Fi problem areas?
• How many devices are really using the Wi-Fi?
• What are the guests actually doing over the Wi-Fi?
• Is there a capacity limit for Wi-Fi and when will I reach it?
• Will the Wi-Fi support all the new devices and applications?
ANY OF THIS SOUND FAMILIAR?

IS IT TIME TO CONSIDER TO 802.11ac?
802.11ac sales will accelerate, reaching over 90% of all Wi-Fi devices by 2015
Growth of 802.11ac capable Wi-Fi devices will reach nearly 2 billion by end of2015
Assuming 3 year replacement rate = 70% 802.11ac market share by 2015.
It Depends!

• What is your Current Network type (802.11a/b/g/n/…)?
• What are the Primary Clients are you supporting?
• Are you currently seeing Performance Issues?
• What are your current Network Requirements?
• What is your current Wired Infrastructure?
• What is your future Network Direction?
IS IT TIME TO UPGRADE TO 802.11ac?
21© 2015 XIRRUS :: All Rights Reserved
MYTHS vs. REALITY
• Only high-end clients need this much bandwidth/speed Key value of 11ac is raising the lower end
• Just wait for Wave 2 (MU-MIMO, 6.9Gbps, …) to be safe Probably a few still waiting for 11n 600Mbps (4x4)
• Only limited # of 11ac clients in use Default chipset http://wikidevi.com/wiki/List_of_802.11ac_Hardware
• LTE growth will significantly reduce need for Wi-Fi Think Wi-Fi offload, Passpoint, 802.11u, NGH, …..
• 802.11ac will require a complete network rip and redesign Technology (wired and wireless) continues to evolve, planning for it is key
• 11ac allows you to reduce # of APs to offer same bandwidth Yes, in Theory, No, in Reality – where do you want to live?
