Overview of IMCP Designation

Investing in Manufacturing Communities Partnership (IMCP) is a federal initiative to strengthen the manufacturing sector’s global competitive advantage.

IMCP designation is provided for two years, as of June 23, 2014.

Chicago Metro Metal Consortium is one of 12 “Manufacturing Communities ” in the country.

Receive preferential treatment and consideration when competing for  $1.3 billion in economic development funds from IMCP Aligned Federal Agencies.

Get a dedicated Federal Point of Contact to help us access federal funding.

Opportunity to implement a cluster-based economic development strategy focused on metals.

Proactively identify and pursue funding to support our efforts.

Successful leveraging of designation will require full support and active participation of all Consortium members.

Workforce and Training

• Identify opportunities for creation of new or expansion of existing linkages between current/prospective employers, education and training institutions and workforce development industry groups.

• Expand IMEC process model pilot to convert business and talent problems to pre- and post-hire solutions.

• Trade associations will educate employers about how industry-recognized credentials translate to advanced manufacturing job skills

• Build on the success of manufacturing workforce initiatives including Calumet Green Manufacturing Partnership (CGMP), Accelerated Training for Illinois Manufacturing (ATIM), Illinois Network for Advanced Manufacturing (INAM), and Manufacturing Careers Internship Program (MCIP).

• Develop and implement an outreach strategy to publicize workforce development resources for underserved populations including low-income, racial/ethnic minority and women.

• Consortium will assess current industrial parks and determine whether a metal-specific park is needed or whether existing parks can accommodate the needs of metal firms.

Operational Improvement and Capital Access

• Create a Sustainability Committee led by the Cook County Department of Environmental Control (CCDEC) with participation from Illinois Technology Sustainability Center, Elevate Energy, metal manufacturers and other stakeholders.

• Conduct an analysis of business operational costs and local capital access. Use information to develop and implement a strategy to attract public and private capital to support operational efficiency improvements.

Reduce manufacturers' production costs

• Sustainability Committee will build local efforts and capital projects that facilitate industrial energy efficiency, combined heat and power, and commercial energy retrofits.

• Coordinate with local building authorities to incorporate energy efficient components within related codes and requirements and to incentivize participation through expedited processing.
