Historical Note
In 1868, Archbishop James Duggan of Chicago requested the Daughters of Charity open the first Catholic hospital on the North Side of the city. Sister Walburga Gehring founded the hospital in a rented house in Lake View. When the hospital quickly outgrew its size, it relocated to the corner of Behring and Sophia Streets (now Burling and Dickens), opening in 1872. During the 1871 Chicago fire, the building was used as a shelter for those who lost their homes. It received modernization and enlargement in 1890.
Among the early achievements of the hospital was the first psychiatric unit in Chicago at their second opening in 1872. Throughout the late 19th century, one-third of the Hospital’s beds were reserved for free services to the poor. In 1893, the School of Nursing was established, which transferred immediate nursing care from the Daughters of Charity to lay student nurses, an arrangement that lasted until 1949. The School of Nursing achieved full accreditation in 1929. At the turn of the 20th century, the hospital served as the residence of Dr. Nicholas Senn, founder of the Association of Military Surgeons of the United States. In 1937, Dr. Austin A. Hayden organized a clinic to dispense a nasal spray treatment for infantile paralysis. By the 1950s, the hospital was known for its radiology department and advances in radiology research. The School of Nursing received expanded facilities in 1962; however, the school closed in 1964 in favor of partnerships with other medical schools in the area, first with Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine from 1969-1977, eventually replaced by Northwestern University Medical School in 1979. The Hospital moved to its current location between Lake Shore and Commonwealth in 1964. In this new facility, the hospital excelled in the field of community mental health, radiology, and cardiac care. In 1970, the achieved another medical milestone by opening the first renal dialysis unit. In 1972, in partnership with St. Vincent de Paul Center in Chicago, another sponsored work of the Daughters of Charity, St. Joseph’s opened a
family health center. In 1979, the Hospital offered a family birthing room for the first time as an alternative to traditional hospital labor and delivery.
In addition to its main campus, St. Joseph’s Hospital co-operated the Chicago Northside Magnetic Resonance Imaging facility, a senior housing facility, and an internal medicine practice on the South Side. In 1995, the St. Joseph’s Hospital system merged with Columbus-Cabrini Health System under the masthead of St. Joseph’s Health Center, with merger of staff and internal services. In 2001, sponsorship of the hospital was transferred to Resurrection Health Care, and the Daughters of Charity officially left the hospital in 2002. In 2011, Resurrection Health Care merged with Provena Health to form Presence Health, which today co-administers the hospital along with the Catholic Alexian Brothers Health System and the Adventist Adventist Midwest Health.
