Fischer Random Chess decides the winner of Wilkinson’s

Fischer Fantastique Fun Tourney! – Stew Wilkinson

On September 4, 2014 the PHCC held a fun event, celebrating Bobby Fischer’s 1963

U.S. Championship”! Alan Gregg combined his knowledge of Bobby Fischer history

and trivia with his prowess in speed chess to win the “coveted” trophy, despite the

challenges of seven other PHCC members.

The one night tournament honored Bobby

Fischer and his amazing 11-0 record in the 1963

United States Chess Championship. Club

members had to find the move that Bobby played

in five positions from 1963 and then answer ten

quiz questions about Bobby and the 1963

tournament. The positions and quiz challenged

many PHCC members, but not Bill Wingrove! Dr.

Bill aced the puzzles and missed only one quiz

question. Certainly this annoyed the tournament

director. However, he was pleased to have contestants fall for “gambits” in the quiz,

mistaking Larry Fine (Larry of Three Stooges ), Hikaru Sulu (Navigator of the Star

Trek’s Enterprise), and Benito Mussolini (“ Il

Duce” Dictator of WWII’s Fascist Italy) for

chess players. Special mention goes to

newcomer Kevin Britton and 2103

scholastic champion, Nathan Allen. They

both arrived late and had limited time on

the puzzles and the quiz. Kevin, nonetheless

, solved three of the five puzzles, better than

everyone save Bill Wingrove and Matt

Morabito!

After the intrepid warriors completed the

written section, they each played two G/15

speed games stating from opening positions Bobby Fischer played in his 1963

Allen Gregg and Bill Wingrove face off in the Fischer

Random Chess sudden death blitz game.

2014 Fischer Fun Chess Championship Trophy

2

masterpiece (KID, Caro-Kann, Spanish, King’s Gambit, Najdorf Sicilian). Each puzzle

or quiz answer was worth two points. Each speed game win was worth five points with

a draw or bye worth three points. The two highest scores would meet in one winner-

take-all game in Fischer Random Chess.

Matt Morabito, Alan Gregg and Bill Wingrove were tied at 28 points each! The two

finalists would be those who came closest to guessing the amount of Fischer’s prize

money for winning the 1963 U.S. Championships which was $2000. Alan conferred

with Bob Barker and wrote down $501. Matt’s guess of $10,000 seemed logical. Bill

“Kreskin” Wingrove chose $2500 to join Alan in the finals!

The Fischer Random Chess position to start the G/15 finale seemed balanced, but one

quirk could have favored White. White had a Bishop on h1 and Black’s Queen began

the game at a8. Bill with White chose not to play an early fianchetto and Alan went on

to win from a dominant position. Thanks to all who participated and congratulations

to Alan Gregg, “Bobby Fischer 1963 US Championship” tournament winner!

PHCC Rating Lists

The following list represents only current members of the Port Huron Chess Club. Current USCF ratings were used for

members that had them, in order to establish the initial club rating list. The USCF rating format is used as the basis for

calculating our club rating list. Members that had no USCF ratings are given a provisional rating based on their

performances against regular club members who had USCF ratings. Club rated events will use these ratings for pairing

purposes.
