Cheshire Homes

• Founded by Group Captain Lord Leonard Cheshire

• To support disabled people

• From a single Home after World War II it is now in 52 countries.

• He started the Bangalore unit in 1961 with the help of a group of volunteers.

About Cheshire Homes Bangalore

• Is a registered Society, complying with all necessary statutory requirements, (has 12-A, 80G, FCRA, PAN, etc)

• Has a mission to

a) Support disabled girls and make them economically independent.

b) Shelter and care for elderly women from the economically weaker section of society.

• Is a secular organisation

• It is responsible for charting its own activities and raising funds.

• Runs a Home with a capacity of around 50 for disabled girls & women

• Provides free boarding & lodging, education, medical care, corrective surgery & skills training for its residents.

It has:

• A Needle work training & production centre

• A Craft training centre

• A Computer training & soft skills centre

• A Workshop for sorting and assembling for factories.

2. The Whitefield Home -

• Is a refuge for elderly women to live in dignity during their sunset years

• Provides free boarding & lodging, health care, recreation & compassion for the residents.

• It has a capacity for around 20 disabled / elderly women

• Presently the number of residence are low since both the infrastructure & financial requirements need supplementation.

3. Livelihood Resource Centre (LRC)

• Was started in 2008 with the support of Leonard Cheshire Disability, U.K.; with the aim of providing services and solutions for people living with disabilities (PWD) in & around Bangalore.

• Since inception in August 2008, LRC has developed a data base for 400 PWD, conducted/ arranged training for 120 persons & secured job placements for 65 persons in the I T, Hotel & other service industries.

What LRC does:

• Identify & register people with disabilities (PWD)• Counseling & sensitizing • Support skills training and improving skills.• Support job placements.• Support for self employment.

• Establish Networks & Linkages (Corporate, NGO, MFI,)

• Developed a data base on PWDs, job openings, supporting Institutions & corporate.

LRC – Sectors of Focus

Presently LRC is focusing on building up linkages with the following sectors:

• IT / BPO• Retail• Hospitality• Garment• Small scale industry• Micro - enterprise

An appeal for your contribution

• Presently it costs us around Rs. 20 lakhs to run the Airport road Home & Rs. 4 lakhs to run the Whitefield Home.

• Presently LRC is costing 30 lakhs per year. It is supported by Accenture Ltd. for 2009 -2010.

• Since the Airport road Home & LRC can manage within the present support, the Whitefield Home needs immediate attention in the following areas:

• Increasing & improving the competence of the care staff. Present strength is 2, required 5.

• Regular medical support –health checks/ doctors visit/ emergency help.

• Volunteers to enhance quality of residents lives.

• Long term; infrastructural up-gradation.

How you can help

• Donations from Individuals (sponsor a resident, support for homes expenses / waiver of Doctors fees for corrective surgery, etc.)

• Fund raising support by institutions through organising an event (eg. Walk the extra mile, musical / concert, etc)

• Donate in kind: (rice, wheat, dals, oil, toiletries, school books, uniforms,)

• Become a friend and donate Rs.1000/ annually

How you can help

• Volunteer time for building up extra-curricular activities for the residence (music, drama, physical education, coaching in some subjects, counseling, etc.)

• And many more ways.

Ways of contributing presently in practice

1 Donor support for Homes Rs.100,000 & above

2 Support a child – education Rs.10,000 / year

3 Support an elderly woman (food /clothing / Medical )

4 Medical expenses for corrective surgery / orthopedic, hearing & other aids per child

Rs.5,000 / year

5 Friend of Cheshire Home, Bangalore Rs.1,000 / year

6 We accept dry rations (rice / wheat / oil / dal / toiletries, etc
