    Cultural Tourism gathered over 80 participantsAn increase by 6% of foreign tourists visiting Bulgaria was achieved for the first two months of 2011 vs. the same period in 2010. This is what Ivo Marinov, Deputy-Minister of Economy, Energy, and Tourism, said at the opening of the eighth edition of the Cultural Tourism International Fair in Veliko Tarnovo on April 13. Data shows also a growth by nearly 7% of leisure and vacation visits, while business visits are registering a 12.6% growth.

    During the first quarter of 2011, 32,683 tourists visited Veliko Tarnovo. For the same period in 2010, the visitors count was 28,245. The Sound and Light audio-visual show was performed already 29 times in the current year, vs. 15 performances in Q1 2010.

    The participants to the one-of-a-kind cultural tourism exchange were also greeted by Todor Chobanov, Deputy-Minister of Culture, and by Veliko Tarnovos Mayor, Dr. Rumen Rashev.

    More than 80 exhibitors municipalities, tourism organisations, NGOs, and cultural institutions presented the cultural tourism opportunities in Bulgaria. Foreign representatives of organizations from countries with traditions in tourism Argentina, Indonesia, RSA, France, Spain, Poland, South Korea, Greece, Italy, Macedonia, Serbia, Montenegro, Romania, Croatia, etc. took also part in the event.

    Sandanski offers new tourist productsA new product of the Sandanski travel destination: EXTREME ADVENTURE MIX FOR HIGH-THRILL SEEKERS! This is the title of the first in a series of guides, What to do in Sandanski and the region. Youll find it in the towns Tourist Information Centre and at hotel receptions. Inside, youll find information on how to experience extreme adventures like rafting, kayaking, canyoning, horse riding, mountain trekking and biking, applied military sports, and shooting, while learning how to join biking tours with Olaf Ludwig.

    The Sandanski Municipality and the Association of Hotel and Restaurant Keepers and Tour Operators Sandanski demonstrated that teamwork between a municipal administration and an NGO is the right path to success. Thus, after winning the disputed Bulgarias SPA Destination prize, this year Sandanski followed with the Best Developing Destination prize from SPA Expo, Bulgarias largest international tourism exhibition.

    Sardinia was presented on a tourism forum in SofiaA tourism forum ItalyBulgaria: Destination Sardinia was held recently at the Sofia Grand Hotel. The event was organised by the Italian Chamber of Commerce in Bulgaria, jointly with the chambers of commerce of the Sardinian towns of Cagliari, Oristano, and Noro and in co-operation with the Bulgarian Chamber of Tourism.

    The Sardinia region is presented for the first time in Bulgaria, which is a good opportunity for the development of bilateral tourism relations. The Italian delegation included representatives of three among the largest local touroperators (one of them heads up 44 travel agencies on Sardinian territory) and of seven splendid hotels and resort complexes in Sardinia.

    The forums agenda included active discussions of themes relevant to the branch, as well as a presentation of Sardinia as a travel destination standing out with innovation, incredible nature attractions, strong traditions, and characteristic cuisine. Other objectives of the event were also disclosing Bulgarias potential as a new and non traditional travel destination and enabling the borrowing of good practices from the Italian tourism sector.

    The NGFA presents the TransformSofia 2011 exhibitionThe first of its kind and scale in Bulgaria international student exhibition was launched at the National Gallery for Foreign Art (NGFA). Its organized by the National Academy of Arts and will last until May 8.

    Works of more than 200 students from ten south-eastern European academies and universities are displayed. The exhibition includes painting, sculpture, etching, multimedia, applied arts, design, photography, and digital arts.

    Transform is an international forum for the pictorial arts. Its objectives are to present artistic and scientific studies and to outline perspectives in front of future artists and of the arts education in an international context, by means of cultural dialogue a series of exhibitions in ten cities of south-eastern Europe, discussions, and other initiatives. The initiators of the project are the National Academy of Arts, Sofia, and Mimar Sinan University, Istanbul. They laid down the beginning of a useful multipartite co-operation between the arts academies and universities in south-eastern Europe.

    The first international student exhibition under the Transform project was held in 2009-2010 in Istanbul.

    The Dreams of a Forest contest at the Balgarka ParkSome 480 contestants from around the country participated into the competition for literary, pictorial, photographic, and multimedia works of art organized by the Directorate of the Balgarka Nature Park under the motto The Dreams of a For-est. According to Balgarka Nature Parks Director, Ms. Maya Radeva, for the first time the contest moved up from region-al to national level, in view of the large-scale interest and par-ticipation of kids from all over the country. The participants have presented many innovative techniques, e.g., phytode-sign. They have also developed extraordinarily sophisticated Adobe Flash presentations.

    On April 6, during the Forest Week, H.E. James Warlick, U.S. Ambassador to Bulgaria, visited the Balgarka Nature Park and awarded personally prizes to contest winners. His schedule included also the opening of a seeds collection at the Balgarka Centre, planting of saplings, installation of bird homes, a promenade along an eco path, and visits of a genetic bank with local fruit trees and of the former stone quarry, which is currently re-cultivated under a project financed by the Operational Programme Environ-ment 2007-2013. Officials from the Ministry of Agriculture and Food and the Executive Forestry Agency participated to the visit programme as well.

    Great and Holy Thursday at the Etara Architectural and Ethnographic ComplexTraditional decoration of eggs using vegetal dyes will take place from 11:30 on April 21, Great and Holy Thursday, at the Etara Architectural and Ethnographic Complex. Acting as demonstrator will be Ms. Dimitrina Ilieva; shell show to children from a Gabrovo school in a house on the main street special egg dying techniques.

    Museum visitors will have the opportunity to see the exhibition called The Road of Dyed Eggs thats on visit from the Museum of History of Velingrad. Concurrently, another exhibition, Sounds from the Balkan, will be arranged in the small exhibition room next to the Etara AECs medicinal herbs shop. It displays traditional musical instruments from the museums fund.

    Weeks of Germany in Bulgaria 2011Within the framework of the Weeks of Germany in Bul-garia 2011, a modern and vast image of Germany in the areas of culture, economy, and politics was presented under the Visages of Germany motto April 3 to 19 in several Bulgarian cities.The event was under the patronage of Klaus Wowereit, Mayor of Berlin, and Yordanka Fandakova, Mayor of Sofia. The initiative started on Sunday, April 3 at 11:00 on Sveta Nedelya Square, with the official opening of the Art for Tolerance exhibition of United Buddy Bears. It displayed 120 United Buddy Bears standing hand-in-hand and appealing for tolerance and understanding between nations. The exhibition will last until May 9.The Buddy Bear project is an artistic initiative by Eva and Klaus Herlitz. The first cub sculpture from fibre-glass, 2 m high and weighing about 50 kg, was created in 2001. Since 2002, a special Buddy Bear collection is on a global tour. Each bear represents one of the 144 UNO member states. Buddy Bear Bulgaria is painted by Bul-garian artist Klio Karadim, laureate of the DAAD Preis fr herausragende Leistungen Auslndischer Studier-ender.
