Cherga BG 48

Cherga (Rug) is a Bulgarian word that is hard to translate but its literal meaning is hand- woven carpet. In ancient, times young Bulgarian girls used to weave rugs for their dowry, which was handed down from mother to daughter. The weaving is entirely by hand and hence requires much time and effort. Each rug is a unique artistic creation combining variety of patterns and colors depending upon local traditions. Ac-cordingly, each cherga is as colorful and varied as the life of its creator.

The mission of the Cherga magazine is to put on display the multiple facets of Bulgaria, a country that has preserved its traditions, customs, history and culture. Each issue of the Cherga magazine weaves the Bulgarian rug in the way we see it.
