Wiped film evaporators (or WFE’s) are the preferred method of distil-lation for a wide spectrum of spe-cialty chemicals to avoid isomeri-zation or heat damage to the molecule. The product retention time in a WFE is typically below 60 seconds compared to hours ex-perienced in more traditional batch or column distillation meth-ods. In addition, Short Path Evapo-rators (or SPD’s) operate at ex-tremely low vacuum (0.001 mm Hg, absolute pressure) so the boil-ing point of the product is reduced significantly below atmospheric conditions and heat can be applied sparingly to generate a distillate. Low reten-tion time and very high vacuum combine to keep the heat signature very low.
Distillation utilizing WFE and SPD technology is utilized in a broad spectrum of applications including the separa-tion of monomers from polymers, isolating specific mo-lecular ranges in polymers, deodorizing or de-coloring polymers or oils, separating polymers from catalyst salts etc. Many of the specialty chemicals distilled (e.g., waxes, thermoplastics and thermosets) have melting points above 100C and require heat traced equipment throughout the distillation process.
For example, WFE and SPD methods are the preferred method for processing thermosetting resins used in the advanced composites field and high purity electronic grade chemicals. The technology also finds application in polymer field where reactions are incomplete and unre-acted components or monomers must be stripped from the polymer to obtain a product suitable for the market.
Although the WFE/SPD Equipment described is capable of demanding distillations of high performance chemi-cals, is also a cost effective method to upgrade the qual-ity of commodity chemicals. For example, WFE’s are frequently used to improve soap-grade glycerin derived from the biodiesel market into technical or pharmaceuti-cal grade glycerin the value of which is significantly above the cost of upgrading.
DISTILLATION SERVICES FOR SPECIALTY CHEMICALS USING WIPED FILM EVAPORATOR SYSTEMS
Chemtech’s Laboratory and Pilot Plant resources can augment your R&D and product commercialization efforts to introduce new technology and products. Chemtech’s Laboratory and Pilot Plant Equipment is briefly described in the below paragraph. The distilla-tion equipment is based upon equipment designed and fabricated by Chemtech. Chemtech’s equipment can achieve operating temperatures up to 350C and pres-sures as low as 0.001 mm Hg (absolute pressure) which translates into an AEBP of approximately 740C.

The P&ID illustrated above represents one of Chemtech’s 3-Stage Distillation Systems installed at the Lockport facility, which unit is frequently used in R&D, commercial development and specialty chemical processing for our clients. This unit operates on a continuous flow basis and can separate three distillate fractions and one resi-due in a single pass. Additional fractions are possible when operating the equipment in several passes.
Chemtech also cooperates with an associated company which using equipment fabricated by Chemtech can dis-till products in a cGMP food/pharmaceutical qualified environment. Chemtech Services offers Laboratory and Pilot Plant Services which can process samples as small as 0.50 liter and up to truckload quantities.
