DALHOUSIE UNIVERSITY Department of Chemistry
Faculty Position The Department of Chemistry at Dalhousie
University invites applications for a faculty position, with
preference given to applicants whose research interests are in any
area of experimental chemistry. This position is part of the
Dalhousie Diversity Faculty Award program. The position requires a
PhD degree, postdoctoral experience and an exceptional research
track record. The appointment can be made at any rank (Assistant,
Associate or Full Professor), depending on qualifications of the
applicant. The successful candidate will be expected to teach
undergraduate and graduate classes in chemistry and to establish a
vigorous and creative research program with external funding.

publications, a detailed research proposal (5 pages maximum
including executive summary), a separate statement of teaching
interests and experience, and a separate one-page statement of how
the proposed research aligns with the Dalhousie University

JOB TITLE: Undergraduate Laboratory Manager
DEPARTMENT: Chemistry

PRIMARY PURPOSE: The Undergraduate Laboratory Manager is
responsible for designing, implementing and managing undergraduate
chemistry laboratories in accordance with course, departmental and
college objectives.
NATURE OF WORK:
The Undergraduate Laboratory Manager reports to the Head,
Department of Chemistry. The Undergraduate Laboratory Manager works
in collaboration with other Laboratory Managers, Laboratory
Coordinators and faculty members to implement the undergraduate
chemistry instructional program. In addition, the Undergraduate
Laboratory Manager provides direct supervision, leadership and
support to teaching assistants (TAs). The position is one that is
heavily involved in academic matters and as such requires a high
capacity for problem solving, sound judgement, and attention to
detail in order to ensure that the chemistry laboratory programs
match the departmental objectives as well as helps students achieve
their academic goals. This is a high volume position requiring the
ability to work under pressure (often high levels of stress due to
the volume of work and regular interruptions) in an environment
where competing deadlines and multi-tasking is the norm. The work
is given minimal direction but requires the management of competing
interests with satisfactory outcomes for all involved. Must be able
to negotiate boundaries and manage projects to positive outcomes;
manage complex issues and conflict. The work significantly impacts
the student experience at the university and is therefore expected
to have a strong positive influence on college programs and on
student recruitment in departmental programs. Considerable
discretion is required as this position is privy to and works with
confidential student information. The position exercises
professional judgement to deal with emerging and unpredictable
events which impact the department – faculty, graduate students,
undergraduate students and student services and programs.
ACCOUNTABILITIES:
People Leadership • Select, supervise, train and evaluate
laboratory TAs with the quality of instruction in the chemistry
laboratories given highest priority.
• Develop professional, collaborative relationship with members
of the laboratory teaching staff, with faculty and staff within the
Department, College and non-University groups or organizations.

Academic Programming and Scholarship
• Develop, deliver and continuously improve chemistry lab
programs.
• Prepare, develop and deliver teaching materials that are
consistent with course objectives and are completed in a timely
manner. These include lab schedules, TA manuals, marking schemes,
lab manuals, quizzes, problem session questions and solutions,
online homework systems, etc.
• Teach introductory chemistry or other chemistry courses as
assigned.
Risk Management and Financial Resources
• Ensure a safe work environment by making sure that safe
chemistry lab practices are followed and that all current
environmental health and safety regulations are met.
• Ensure appropriate on-site training for TAs and students in
safety procedures and practices.
• Ensure effective use of people, materials and equipment to
minimize financial expense of chemistry lab operation.
Student Enrolment/Development
• Provide assistance with chemistry laboratory work and online
class assignments through direct student interaction and through
email.
• Assist in the professional development of TAs by providing
mentorship and support for their teaching duties.
• Provide exemplary student advising and mentoring.
Administrative Resources
• Prepare, maintain and submit accurate attendance and grades
records and likewise ensure these are submitted regularly by
TAs.
• Develop appropriate chemistry laboratory schedules for the
department.
• Help with lab registration, overrides and exemptions.
Strategic and/or Unit Level Planning
• Participate in long-term planning of content and delivery of
chemistry courses and labs in addition to participating on
departmental committees.
Other/ External Relationships/Partnerships
• Act as a resource person in chemistry lab related matters.
Such activities may include evaluating off-campus facilities,
coordinating high school events, giving advice regarding laboratory
renovations and providing chemicals and access to equipment as
deemed appropriate.

QUALIFICATIONS: Education: A Ph.D. in chemistry. Experience: A
minimum of three years of related experience, which can include
experience related to PhD work. Courses/training related to
teaching at undergraduate institutions would also be an asset.
Skills: A demonstrated ability in effective decision making,
leadership, motivation and team management skills is required. The
ability to work independently, collaboratively or as part of a team
with other laboratory staff is imperative. Working with
confidential student information in a discreet manner is essential
to the position, as is the ability to interact with persons at all
levels of the Department from faculty and staff to graduate and
undergraduate students.
Exceptional organizational, written and oral communication,
analytical, interpersonal and computer skills are required.
A solid background in chemistry and familiarity with common and
even emerging techniques in the chemistry laboratory. Demonstrated
ability in chemical handling and familiarity with a wide variety of
instruments is essential to the position.

ENGINEERING TENURE TRACK POSITION COMPETITION #01A16 *AMENDED
CLOSING DATE & START DATE* The University of Prince Edward
Island invites applications to the Department of Chemistry for
consideration for a tenure track position in Materials Chemistry at
the Assistant Professor level, to commence on August 1, 2016. The
position will be cross-appointed with the School of Sustainable
Design Engineering. The applicants should hold a PhD degree in
chemistry, materials science and engineering, or a closely related
field; and have relevant postdoctoral and/or industrial experience.
Teaching experience would be a strong asset. While the position is
at the Assistant level, applicants at a higher level (Associate and
Full Professor) will also be considered. The Department of
Chemistry and the School of Sustainable Design Engineering are
committed to undergraduate and graduate teaching, and the
successful candidate will be expected to teach courses in inorganic
chemistry, as well as introductory chemistry; and courses in the
field of materials science and engineering. It is expected that the
successful faculty member will develop a vigorous research program
that will attract external funding. He/she is also expected to
initiate and develop strong research collaborations between the
Department of Chemistry and the School of Sustainable Design
Engineering as well as with industry partners.
The Department of Chemistry at UPEI has a strong commitment to
teaching and research, and UPEI's School of Sustainable Design
Engineering focuses on a design-based student learning experience
that is hands on, team-focused, project-oriented, and
industry-linked.
UPEI is well equipped with modern instrumentation including a
300 MHz FT-NMR, a powder X-ray diffractometer, elemental analyzer,
TGA, DSC, DMA, high resolution TEM/SEM, and GC-MS. UPEI also
maintains close ties to the Duffy Research Centre, which allows
access to a wide range of research instrumentation including 600
MHz NMR and High Resolution Mass Spectrometers. This position is
subject to final budgetary approval. Complete applications will

teaching philosophy and experience.

any past experience with undergraduate laboratory development,
experiential and hands-on learning, and mentoring students in a
