The left hand synonym column shows common or chemical trade names in alphabetical order, while the right hand column shows thename by which the chemical is identified on the Resistance Chart. This guide has been compiled by our Research and Development
Department and is designed to be used in conjunction with the Marigold Industrial Glove Resistance Chart. The purpose of the guide is toenable you to use the Glove Resistance Chart by cross-referencing the familiar name of each chemical with the chemical name as it
appears on the chart.
DegradationThe effect of a chemical on a glove’s structure.
On contact with certain chemicals a glove may lose one or more ofits original physical qualities. Exposed gloves may become stifferand more brittle or softer and weaker. Generally a loss of shapewill occur. This effect is called DEGRADATION (DEGN).
Degradation Measurement
Two specimens are cut from a glove. The outer surface of onespecimen is exposed to a chemical for a defined period. Both theexposed and unexposed samples are tested to determine theirresistance to breaking under tension. The percentage changeunder tension after exposure for 30 minutes, 60 minutes,120 minutes, 240 minutes and 360 minutes are used to determinethe rate of change in resistance to breaking under tension. The estimated time for a loss of 30% tensile strength is used torecommend a useful time for the gloves.

PERMEATION & DEGRADATIONCHEMICAL NAMEST E S T I N GH O W T O U S E T H I S G U I D E
PermeationChemicals can attack a glove in a more subtle manner. Somechemical molecules can pass into the glove material and diffusethrough to the inside. This can occur even though there are noopenings or holes in the glove. This effect is known as PERMEATION. Permeation data comprisetwo measures: Breakthrough Time and Permeation Rate.
I BREAKTHROUGH TIME (BTT) — the time it takes for a chemicalto pass through the gloves measured in minutes.II PERMEATION RATE (PR) — the rate that the chemical transmitsthrough the glove after breakthrough. Represented on the chart asFast (F), Medium (M), Slow (S) and Zero (0).
Permeation testinga A specimen is cut from the glove to form a barrier within the
test cell.
b The outer surface of the specimen is then exposed to thechemical by flooding the appropriate side of the test cell (thechallenge side).
c At measured intervals, the other side of the cell (the collection
side) is tested to determine first the presence of the chemicaland then the extent by which it has permeated through thespecimen. Permeation is thus measured under conditionsequivalent to complete immersion.
BREAKTHROUGH TIME
The Breakthrough Time tests were carried out for up to eight hours, according to EN374-PT3.

1 Establish the chemicals with which the gloves will come into contact. You may need to use the Marigold Industrial Guide to ChemicalNames to help you cross-reference the chemical names.
2 Reading across the chart from the relevant chemical, use the colour coding as a quick reference to find suitable gloves.
3 Select the most appropriate glove by looking at the individual glove’s performance in the Breakthrough Time, Permeation Rate andDegradation Rating columns.

Making sense of the data Safety and riskphrasesThe following key refers to the hazardinformation shown on the right of thechemicals on the chart. the informationonly relates to hazards that can beinfluenced by wearing appropriateprotective gloves.
This is not intended as a comprehensiveguide to the hazard of each chemicalnor does it cover hazards that cannot beinfluenced by wearing gloves, i.e.inhalation hazards, irritation to eyes etc.It is intended as additional information tohelp you select the correct glove.

If in doubt over selection, or the chemical does not feature in thechart, ring the Marigold Technical Helpline and we will recommend
‘Useful Time’ colour codeThis is based on the results of the Breakthrough Time, Permeation Rate andDegradation tests and suggests a ‘useful time’ for glove protection against a particularchemical. It acts as a guide to the length of time for which a glove can be usedbefore permeation and/or degradation affect the performance of the glove.
