What is hemoglobin?

Hemoglobin gives red blood cells their characteristic color.

How is hemoglobin important in the transport of oxygen in our bodies?

The main function of hemoglobin is to transfer oxygen. Since oxygen is a gas, it binds to hemoglobin which helps it transfer through our body.

Why is the transport of oxygen by hemoglobin a real life example of chemical

bonding ?

It is a real life example because atoms bind together in chemical bonding while oxygen binds with blood inside the human body.

How is hemoglobin related to a successful climb to the top of Mt

Everest ?

There is not much oxygen on the top of Mt Everest. so people use gas tanks to help them get to the top. During this time a persons body and hemoglobin has to be normal in order for the person to be alive and healthy.

Autologus and homologous

Autologous blood doping is the transfusion of one’s own blood, which has been stored (refrigerated or frozen) until needed.

Homologous blood doping is the transfusion of blood that has been taken from another person with the same

blood type.

What is EPO and why is it used?

• EPO is a peptide that is produced naturally by the human body. EPO is released by the kidneys and and acts on the bone marrow to stimulate red blood cell production.

• IT is used to improve the amount of blood that red blood cells carry to the muscles this helps the muscles function better and for a longer period of time.

• Blood doping is also like blood transfusion it is used to save someone by giving them blood if they have lost their blood. Also blood doping is used to enhance a persons ability while playing sports.

Side effects of blood doping

• Another persons blood may contain viruses• An athlete can put her own life at risk if the procedure is

manner• Also unnaturally high blood cells can increase the rate of
