WHO CARES?ABOUT THE FUTURE OF DESIGN
Join the debate: 11-14 April 2013
A word from Sir John HegartyWe sometimes forget that everything man made had, at some point, to be designed. Without design our world wouldn’t function. And, as we increasingly exploit our world’s precious resources, the need to utilise them in a sustainable way becomes ever more important; one could say vital. The role of the designerbecomes increasingly central to our wellbeing.
But design isn’t only about function. It should also deliver pleasure. It should make us feel good. Great design has the ability to lift our spirits and imbue value over and above its function.
Listen to Sir John Hegarty’s thoughts on the
link between good design and happiness on

Good design improves the way we live and helps us navigate the world around us... It enhances our wellbeing and makes us happy. But who really cares about design? Creativity is a hot topic of debate: in relation to its size, Britain punches above its weight in its creative infl uence around the world and it is predicted that by 2017, around 50% of new jobs will come from the creative sector. At the same time design and technology subjects are in threat of being devalued in the National Curriculum.
The Cheltenham Design Festival 2013 is a opportunity to engage with some of the world’s most innovative and forward-thinking creatives; people who infl uence our everyday lives in areas such as education, the environment, urban design, technology and business.
