What’s Literacy Month all about?” Chelsey says: “I’m glad you asked! I’ve been digging online at the RI website and here’s what I found out. The RI Board of Directors designated March as Literacy Month. It’s true that considerable pro- gress has been made in recent decades to reduce illiteracy. Still, nearly a billion people lack the most basic literacy and numeracy skills.” “A billion? That’s a big number! Give me some examples.” Chelsey says: “OK! Here goes: Ninety- eight percent of the world’s illiterate population is in developing countries. Fifty percent of the world’s illiterate live in India and China. More than fifty per- cent of the population of Africa is illiter- ate. Two-thirds of all those who lack lit- eracy and numeracy skills are women. More than 130 million school-age chil- dren are not attending classes.” “Whew! That’s amazing! Why is Liter- acy so important?” Chelsey says: “Because the ability to read, write and do simple math is not only critical to pro- gress and prosperity, it is necessary for the very survival of individuals in mod- ern society.” “What does RI recommend our Rotary club do about the Literacy problem?” Chelsey says: “Excellent question! I un- derstand you donate books to the El Puente Community School. March is a perfect time to promote those efforts in the local media by creating awareness about Literacy and recognizing the club’s 2009-2010 program speakers in whose name the books were donated.” “Anything else?” Chelsey says: “Sure! Here are a few Project Ideas that RI sug- gests: • Volunteer to do repairs or improve- ments at a community school like El Puente; • Sponsor a reading competition and give a prize to those students who read the most books; • Start a mentoring program for students or volunteer to spend time with students to help build their self esteem; • Formally adopt a school.” “Those are all excellent ideas!” Chelsey says: “Well, Rotary is an excellent or- ganization. By visiting, you can find out more about Literacy and Project Ideas. Have a great Literacy Month!” www.Rotary.org The Charitable Request Forms Deadline is March 15!

Rotary Hygiene Kits
In February and March Rotarians are asked to bring to club meetings extra unopened hygiene products and toiletries that they have accumulated from hotel stays. These include soap, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, tooth brushes, tooth paste, combs, mouthwash, and hand sani-tizer. In April these items are sorted, and the club adds wash cloths, disposable razors, and Four-Way Test/Object of Rotary wallet cards. Then a stuffing party is held. One or more (depending upon the amount collected) of each of these items is stuffed into a Ziploc bag. In May half of these hygiene kits are given to the Good Samaritan Homeless Shelter, and half given to Domestic Violence Solutions.
Please help fill John Hennings bucket.
Volunteers Still Needed!
SAVE THE DATE: March 18, Thursday night, 6:00 pm: Joint Meeting at the Radisson with the
three SM Clubs and Nipomo Club. This is in place of our regular meeting on Tuesday March 16, and
spouses/guests are encouraged to come. Guest speaker will be Pat Cusack, SM Honda/Toyota/Saturn co-
owner. Cost will be $35 per person, prepaid.
We need volunteers for:
1. TWO Sergeants-at-Arms – this is to help during seating and registration.
2. Each Club has a choice of static display or “Power Point” to promote / display its activities. Please con-
tact Susan if you will help assemble the displays.
DISTRICT ASSEMBLY
2010-2011 Board Members are requested to attend one of the
two District Assemblies in Ox- nard or Bakersfield. These are the
main annual training sessions for the incoming club leadership team, board of directors and committee
chairs. All club members are welcome to attend this informative half day of training. Our club pays for your
registration.

Just wanted to let you know that Yvonne's father-in-law, Gene Biely, passed this morning, the 26th. Gene was from SM, for many years owning a construction company that expanded to Hawaii, where he relocated to and spent the next 40 years over there. He was a proud Rotarian who made up at our Club whenever he was in town.
Tom Martinez
Ruth is very close to getting her Blue Badge. Just two more items. Congratulations to Ruth and her Mentor Camille.
Camille is going to be Tara’s Mentor.
Scott is going to be Joe’s Mentor.
Who else has a Red Badge that needs to be converted to a Blue Badge?
Fellow Rotarians, it is that time of year where we select our community recipients of our Paul Harris Fellowship award. We have a couple of names from last year, but do not want to overlook anyone that might be especially deserving of the award. Any sug-
gestions to Susan or a board member, would be greatly appreciated.
A reminder that several back issues as well as the current issue of The Rotator can be found on our Website. I also have every issue I have done since September 23, 2008 if there is a specific issue you
