Exterior light shelves help to prevent glare and interior heat gain in the work environment. All employees are provided with task lighting to promote productivity and conserve energy, as well as thermal controls to remain comfortable while working. A raised flooring system houses electrical and HVAC equipment to power, heat and cool the space efficiently. Workstations are grouped together accordingly to enhance communication and efficiency. Ergonomically-designed workstations create visual and acoustic privacy without blocking natural light from entering the space.

Inspired by cultures from across the world, various architectural motifs, natural finishes and furniture styles create an inspiring educational environment for Pittsburgh’s own diverse population. Hempcrete megaliths provide visual and acoustic privacy throughout the common study area for small groups while independent workspaces are located around the perimeter. Quality views of the outdoors promote a calm, yet productive study environment for all individuals, including those in private study rooms; clerestory windows and small peepholes allow light to further penetrate enclosed spaces. Paths between private study rooms create the urge to explore the center, which displays artifacts around every corner. Guests have access to thousands of periodicals, books and online databases to explore the world around them. Unifying these design elements and technologies will provide as a safe, innovative environment for those seeking the opportunity to learn.
