In 1984, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

commissioned us to develop and test an alternative to

flapgate valves, stating that, “Increasing the reliabili-

ty and performance of tidegates has a beneficial

impact on the general pollution abatement program

for the nation’s waterways.” The elastomer “duckbill”

Tideflex® Check Valve was specifically designed

to eliminate the operational and maintenance

problems associated with flapgate check valves,

including corrosion of mechanical parts, freezing open

or shut, warping and

clogging due to trapped debris. The EPA rigorously tested the Tideflex®

valve for two years and found that Tideflex® showed significant improve-

ment over flapgate valves in terms of leakage inflow, entrapment of

debris, capability to self clean and susceptibility to marine fouling.

Today, hundreds of thousands of Tideflex® valves are installed and

performing reliably worldwide.

Twenty years of proven field operation, research, development andcontinued engineering enhancements have combined to make theTF-1 today’s most reliable check valve. The bill is formed into a curvethat returns to a closed position every time, achieving the tightest possible seal for backflow applications, particularly at low flow rates. The eccentric flat-bottom design allows installation where the invert

of the pipe is close to the floor. Thestronger engineered spine provideslong-term performance whi le handling long-term water weight. When you specify the patentedTideflex® TF-1 Curved Bill CheckValve, you are guaranteed a provenrecord of maintenance-free backflowprevention.

SewerSystems

Pumping Stations

CSO/SSOSystems

Tideflex® valves prevent floodwaters from surcharging sewer lines andwashing raw sewageinto streets andbasements.

Combined sewer and sanitarysewer overflow systems useTideflex® valves to prevent receiving water from backflowing to the sewage treatment plant. The new flat-bottom TF-1 is designed forCSO/SSO manhole installations.

EffluentDischargeTideflex® valves protect discharge lines from risingwaters that can flood and surcharge a treatment plant.Ecosystems are also protectedby the Tideflex® Check Valve’sability to diffuse effluent andprevent backflow.

Airport/Highway RunoffTideflex® valves are used extensively for largesurface water areas that require backflow prevention, such as airport runways, highways and parking lots. Tideflex® provides an ideal solution where regulations require treatment of toxic hydrocarbons from runoff.

Large stormwater pumping stationsuse Tideflex® Check Valves to ensurethat tailwater does not backflow intostormwater catchments. The rubber construction of the Tideflex® valve is resistant to saltwater, and low headloss characteristics are ideal for low-lying areas.

Tideflex® valves are used extensively for flood control. They cansit inactive for years and still be ready to provide backflow protection in the event of a flashflood. Typical applications include retention basins, levees, locks and dams, fish bypass systems, city stormwater collection systems, highways, parking lots, airport runways and large industrial and office complexes.

Flood Control Systems

StormwaterDischargeTideflex® Check Valves are the first choice of coastal andinland municipalities for stormwater systems. Tideflex®

valves discharge with 1" of differ-ential pressure, which maximizespipeline storage capacity.

Page 6: Check Valves and Engineered Systems for Water Mixing ...

Groundwater ReliefInground storage basins use Tideflex® valves to relieve pressure from groundwater. The valves allow groundwater to enter the basin while preventing stored fluid from escaping. Tideflex®

valves can be fitted to concrete basins, steel tanks and even geotextile liners.

6

Low-lying areas protected by levees depend onTideflex® valves to prevent high water levels frombackflowing from the river and allow stormwater tofreely drain into the river. The low cracking pressureof the valve allows easy draining even when little difference in elevation exists.

Levees

Marinas and discharge lines can peacefullycoexist because the rubber construction of the Tideflex® valve is quiet, safer to boat hulls than a rigid metal valve and resistant to spills such as oil and fuel.

MarinasTidefleEnginee MaintenaOperatio Environ

Floatables ControlTideflex® valves are used as part of afloatables control strategy to preventaccumulated debris from being washedout of collection areas by floodwaters.

Retention PondsTideflex® valves are used on retentionponds and lagoons because they oftenare inactive for long periods of time.Unlike metal flapper valves the Tideflex®

valves will not rust or corrode.

Page 7: Check Valves and Engineered Systems for Water Mixing ...

Tideflex® valves prevent hazardous spills, runoff from mining operations, leachate from landfills and saltwater from infiltrating protected wetland areas.

Wetlands

Flow Equalization BasinsTideflex® valves are used to prevent backflowfrom one stage of pretreatment to another. The all-rubber construction outlasts anymetal valve in raw sewage, and the operationof the valve is not affected by debris such asplastic bags, twigs or leaves.

7

Offending odors from sewer systemscan be prevented from escaping with lightweight Tideflex® valves whilewater is still allowed to dischargewhen needed.

Odor Control

Rocky areas cause problems for a flapgate valve because stones becomelodged in the valve, preventing it fromclosing fully, or pile up in front of thevalve, preventing it from opening.Tideflex® valves installed in these areasare more reliable.

Coastal Discharge

Tideflex® Check Valves have become frequently specified for commercial and residential areas where dependablebackflow prevention is necessary. The valve is maintenance-free. Passive and silent operation are key benefits.

Where an exposed length ofpipe is available at the discharge end of a pipe, thecuff of the Tideflex® valve isbuilt to match the outside diam-eter of the pipe, and the valve iseasily slipped into place. Band clampsare used to secure the valve.

An integral rubber flange allowsdirect connection to flanged-endpipe or headwalls and seawalls.

Flanges can be ANSI, DINor special drill patterns, including square andrectangular. Backuprings are provided, and gaskets are notrequired.

Where the pipe terminates flush with a headwall, a plate is secured over the opening, and the Tideflex®

valve is slipped onto the pipe thimble. This mountingcan also be used to cover square culverts and oversized openings.

Slip-inside Pipe

Thimble Insert

A pipe stub slightly smaller than the inside diameter ofthe discharge line can be grouted into the end of the

pipe. The Tideflex® valve is then slippedonto the stub, eliminating the need todrill into the headwall or seawall.

A thimble insert is used to add a Tideflex® valveto the influent pipe of a manhole wheneverclearance is not sufficient to allow the valve toprotrude into the manhole. The assembly is

inserted into the influent pipe and anchored to themanhole wall. This assembly can also be used at theend of a pipe where protrusion into a waterway isnot desired.

Commonly used in CSO systems, theTideflex® Series 37 is slipped into the inletend of a pipe, and the integral rubber flange secures the valve tothe manhole wall with a retaining ring. If there is not sufficientroom below the invert of the pipe, the Series 37G is installedinside the pipe and fastened with internal expansion clamps.

The TF-1 was engineered through extensive researchand field experience. Engineered designed features ofthe TF-1 include:

• A strong engineered spine provides long-term per-formance while handling long-term water weight.

• The bill is formed into a curve that returns to aclosed position, allowing for a tighter seal in backflowapplications. An increased bill area also allows for atighter seal, particularly at low flow rates.

• The flat bottom and offset design of the TF-1 allowsit to be installed without modifications to structuressuch as interceptors, manholes and vaults where theinvert of the pipe is close to the floor.

• The TF-1 is custom engineered in various construc-tions so that the valve can handle various backpressurewith minimal headloss.

• The TF-1 is ideal for sewer systems and stormwaterbecause it will seal around small debris. The TF-1design is available with a slip-on or flanged pipe con-nection. Tideflex® TF-1 valves are constructed with acurved bill as standard in sizes 18” and larger.

Cantilever spine of the TF-1 supportsgreater weight than TF-2 design.

Since the spine of the TF-1is at a greater vertical anglecompared to the TF-2, theTF-1 is stronger at with-standing the cantilevereffect when water is flowingthrough the valve. The spine of the TF-1 is

at a greater angle, reducing the cantilevereffects of water weight.

Both the TF-1 and TF-2 have thesame bill height. The TF-1, however, flares at the top only. The bottomremains horizontal and does notflare downward. Therefore, not asmuch bottom clearance is required.

The TF-1 is ideal for sewer systems because it will sealaround small debris. The TF-1 design is available witha slip-on or flanged pipe connection. Tideflex® TF-1Valves are constructed with a curved bill as standard.

Series 35-1

The flat-bottom Series 35-1 features an integralrubber flange, allowing it to be mounted toflanged outfall pipes or directly to headwallswhere the pipe is flush.

The flange size drilling conforms to ANSI B16.10, Class 150#, or can be constructed withDIN, 2632 and other standards. The Series 35Check Valve is furnished complete with steel orstainless steel backup rings for installation.

The Series 35-1 is often a direct replacementfor flanged flapgates. Hinge pins rust and cor-rode if not routinely lubricated, causing theflapper to hang open and allow backflow. Smalldebris that collects in the seating area of thevalve will also keep the flapper open. Tideflex®

Series 35-1 valves 18" and larger are constructedwith a curved bill as standard.

Series 37G

The Series 37G Inline Check Valve wasdeveloped specifically for installationswhere clearance below the invert of a pipeis insufficient to clear the flange of thestandard Series 37. The 37G effectively hasa zero face-to-face dimension since it canbe completely slipped into an existingpipe. Piping modifications are not requiredto provide space for the valve. The Series37G design uses the slip-on principle inreverse.

A special clamp that expands outward isprovided to secure the valve to the inside of a pipe, enabling the valve to beinstalled easily on the outlet pipe from amanhole, such as in a CSO system.

The pressure drop of the Series 37G isincreased because of the smaller I.D.required to fit the check valve in the line.Tideflex® Technologies recommends thevalves be pinned to the pipe. Each clamphas four pre-drilled holes to allow installa-tion of anchors/bolts. Contact our engi-neering staff for additional information.

Series 4739

The Tideflex® Series 4739 Check Valve is manufactured

with a spun aluminum body. The check valve is designed

to handle water, sewage, sludge, lake water and most

hydraulic flows.

The heart of the Series 4739 check valve is a Tideflex®

fabric-reinforced elastomer check sleeve which allows

flow at minimum pressure drop across the valve at all

times. Forward pressure opens the valve automatically

and reverse pressure seals the valve.

The Series 4739’s unique elastomer check valve has the

ability to seal around small pebbles, sticks, leaves and

other debris.

Wear and deterioration caused by continuous operation is

minimized because of the inner elastomer check valve.

There are no mechanical parts such as hinges, discs or

metal seats that can freeze, corrode or bind. The valve’s

operation is silent and non-slamming.

This low pressure, economical design is ideal for systems

with less than 50’ of head. Special coatings or strap-onend of pipe designs are available.

The Series 4739 Tideflex® Check Valve opens with positive pressure.

Reverse pressure seals the bill of the valve to prevent backflow.

Flange Drilling: ANSI 150, DIN and BIS, AUS available.

Manufactured on the same principle asTideflex® Technologies’ revolutionary all-rubberTideflex® Inline Check Valve, the Series 2633 isa simple inline check valve for threaded endpipelines.

Simple in design, the Series 2633consists of a body, two endcaps and anelastomer check sleeve. In the open position, the sleeve creates a wide, free passage propor-tional to the flow in the pipeline. On flow reversal, the sleeve closes slowly andcompletely.

The silent, non-slamming Series 2633 InlineCheck Valve design eliminates water hammerand facilitates low headloss. Containing nolevers, balls, floats or springs to corrode, thevalve is virtually maintenance-free. The onlyreplacement part is the simple, rugged elas-tomer check sleeve.

This small and simple inline check valve is idealfor liquids, gases, powders, slurries and instru-ment or plant air as well as in any environmentwhere preventing backflow is required.

The Series 2633 is manufactured in sizes 1/2" to3". The check sleeve is available in a variety ofelastomers to match specific service conditions.

Problem Solution

Providing optimal oxygen transfer andmixing characteristics with reliable back-flow prevention, Tideflex® Diffusers areideal for use in municipal and industrialaeration applications. While conventionalfine and coarse bubble diffusers typicallyclog with sludge when airflow is interrupt-ed due to blower shutdown or power fail-ure, Tideflex® Coarse Bubble Diffusersmaximize mixing while totally isolating thewastewater from the air manifold andrelated equipment and instrumentation.By allowing routine shutdowns and elimi-nating the need to run blowers or com-pressors around the clock to prevent clog-ging of the diffusers and manifold,Tideflex® Diffusers provide substantialsavings in energy and operational costs.

The principle of operation is simple.Positive differential air pressure opens theTideflex® Diffuser, allowing airflow.Reverse pressure on the outside of the dif-fuser seals the bill, preventing backflow ofsolids or liquids. The patented elastomer-ic design closes drop-tight, even sealing around entrapped solids, eliminat-ing any concern of clogging commonly associated with conventional air dif-fuser systems as well as the extensive costs required to maintain, repair andclean them.

The Tubeflex® Fine BubbleAir Diffuser features a built-inTubeflex® that eliminatesplugging of the header pipe. The hollow-core designreduces buoyancy.

TF-A diffusers are ideal for new andretrofit systems available with 1/2”and 3/4” thread connectors or slip-onconnection.

3MG ground level steel reservoir, with TMS inlet nozzles.

The Tideflex® Mixing System (TMS)

improves water quality within potable water

storage systems in three important ways.

First, by separating the inlet and outlet to

opposite sides of the tank or reservoir, the

TMS eliminates the short-circuiting created

by a single inlet/outlet. This ensures a com-

plete turnover of the water within the tank

to eliminate stagnation.

Second, the TMS ensures that the contents

of the storage tank or reservoir remain in a

completely mixed state, by increasing the

jet velocity of the influent. Tideflex® valves

are inherently variable orifice valves, open-

ing and closing in proportion to the amount

of flow. This reduces the fill time required

to achieve complete mixing.

Finally, each TMS is individually designed

and engineered for its specific application.

The location and number of inlets and out-

lets can be adjusted to reduce or eliminate

dead zones. Extensive Computational Fluid

Dynamic (CFD) modeling of various tank

styles provides Red Valve with the optimal

configuration.

The TMS is totally passive, requiring no

additional energy source. Because it is

housed completely within the reservoir, the

TMS requires no additional external piping

runs or tank penetrations.
