With all the hype about local denim nowadays, Tyara Putri reveals six of the best jeans in town that are worth checking out

1. Pot Meets Pop

This hip brand of designer jeans was launched back in 2008, and now Pot Meets Pop has joined forces with one of Indonesia’s hottest rock ‘n roll bands, The S.I.G.I.T, to produce a series of signature jeans, the Black Summer series, for their Summer 2010 collection. There are four signature jeans in different cuts made with different black denim material. Each pair also has a different quotes on the inside label from one of The S.I.G.I.T’s members. They were right black is just never out of style. (Rp.400,000. Available at Penny Store, 1) Graha Obor 2, Jl. Bangka Raya, no. 110. 2) Mazee, fX Lifestyle X’enter, 6th floor, Jl. Pintu Senayan, www.potmeetspopdenim.blogspot.com)

2. Easton

Though they are still babies in the denim industry, Easton is gaining a good reputation for their consistently stylish jeans. They have three different cuts: slim fit, skinny fit and regular

slim fit, for men and women with unisex cutting. For the fabric and detailing, Easton only uses top quality material for their raw and washed denims. They also keep up with what’s in style and fit without leaving the printing and embroidery details behind. Don’t worry about how they’ll fit, before you buy a pair you can check out the ‘Fit Guide’ on their web store to make sure your jeans just right. Yes, they still sell their stuff online. (Easton Rp. 349,000 – Rp. 639,000. www.thisiseaston.com)

3. 16DS

You might be familiar with their previous name for this line of jeans, sixteen d’Scale, but now these jeans go by the brand name 16DS while sixteen d’Scale has become the company name. This Bandung-based denim company has been upping the ante both in terms of style and quality, and they’ve been collaborating with artists like Sir Dandy and Cagi. Their latest limited item collection combining denim and batik, comes packaged in a heavy wooden-box and complete repair kit from back patch to seam ripper. There’s no discrimination in this wicked collection. 16DS jeans are available for both women and men. (16DS Rp. 700,000- Rp.1,500,000. Level One, Grand Indonesia East Mall, Jl. MH Thamrin, no. 1.

4. Mischief

Mischief Denim Division hit the market in 2008, with inspiration drawn from youth culture, streetwear and the underground music scene. Mischief utilizes simple, comfortable designs made from good quality denim that is 100 per cent handmade. The cutting is sleek, with tight stitching done with skillful craftsmanship. Unfortunately we haven’t heard much about them lately. They don’t have any retailers in Jakarta, and they don’t seem to produce different collections either. The last thing we found was their Summer Collection 2010 (Rp.429,000), which you can order by phone. (Mischief Denim Division 0818 62 8868. www.mischiefdenimdivision.blogspot.com)

5. Sober Denim

Sober Denim just released its first denim collection, La Jaune, also known as Lot LJ001, last July. This collection uses 14.5oz raw vintage indigo denim, genuine cowhide leather patches, strong construction with chain stitching, button flies and reinforced back and coins with gold plated rivets. Using international standards for sizing, Sober Denim provides jeans in sizes from 30 to 36 in slim cuts with low yokes and optional hand-painted arcs on the back pocket. But with only those sizes available, we’re not quite sure if smaller denim lovers will find a fit. (Rp.375,000 without hand-painted arc, Rp.400,000 with hand-painted arc. Mazee, fX Lifestyle X’enter, 6th floor, Jl. Pintu Senayan).

6. Vision Mission

Started in 2008, Vision Mission has struggled to find its niche in the local denim industry. They have produced two collections, The Shift and The Prior, in both dry and washed denim, in various colours like dark grey, black acid, brown and blue. With pizza-box look-a-like packaging, Vision Mission offers one price for each piece of denim, including free shipping to Sumatra, Java and Bali. Be patient, ladies. Though they’re still working on their women’s collection, right now their denim is available to men only and exclusively available in their showroom. (Vision Mission Rp. 400,000. What is it?

Danjyo-Hiyoji is an independent local label that produces exciting fashion items designed with a sense of individuality and modernity. In Japanese, Danjyo means unisex, and though Hiyoji has no particular meaning, the team felt that it sounded good alongside Danjyo, an important factor if someday they decided to expand the brand worldwide, or at least Asia-wide. Inspired by music, art and fashion itself, Danjyo-Hiyoji creates exciting items, made locally, which they hope to grow into a global trend.

When did it start?

Danjyo was launched in 2001 by co-owners

Makers mark Danjyo-Hiyoji by Dana, Liza and Rama

Dana Maulana and Syarifah Liza Mashita, who wanted to concentrate on women’s labels. In 2009, Rama Adrianus Dauhan, creator of a menswear label called Hiyoji, teamed up with Dana and Syarifah. The newly formed Danjyo-Hiyoji team came up with a new goal to create more fascinating ready-to-wear items, including both men’s and women’s collections.

Why we like it?

With an estimated 50 to 100 styles coming every six months, Danjyo-Hiyoji promise that their customer will get the latest basic-with-a-twist fashion items at a reasonable price (Rp. 325,000-Rp. 650,000 for basic attire and Rp. 1,400,000 for suits).

Where can we get it?

For private collection items, you can grab Danjyo-Hiyoji pieces at Harvey Nichols, Grand Indonesia East Mall, Jl. MH Thamrin,

no. 1. For their main and seasonal collections, you can check them out at Level One, Grand

Indonesia East Mall, unit LV-1-13, Jl. MH Thamrin, no. 1 and Jl. Cililin Raya, no. 12a, Kebayoran Baru. Tyara Putri

Inspired by the ancient Chinese art of acupuncture, this father-son collaboration between Yos S Theosabratha and Leonard Theosabratha combines traditional and contemporary design to create some of the most impressive looking yet comfortably ergonomic pieces of furniture around.

Last August, Accupunto just opened another store in Grand Indonesia shopping mall, with graphic installations by the artists behind Whiteboardjournal.com and contributing Hong-Kong-based designer Michael Young.

This concept of this new Accupunto store was derived from observing different stores in malls. While most storefronts are static, the Accupunto store’s designer created a look that has flexibility. The storefront setting can change completely whenever required. It’s a flexible façade that functions as a space partition-cum-window-display.

One exciting design is Leonard ’s XOXO

chair, which oozes his love of woodwork and modern design. The store also carries their latest air-mattress designs, the personal and comfortable Airgonic mattress, which offers firm support and comfort in your sleep – a best-seller for obvious reasons! Tyara Putri

the unique ‘Surprise me’ feature that let’s you spin the phone to select a random track from your library. Inspired by the Sartorialist couture, these young and talented fashion school graduates, Evelyn Fransisca and Devi Natalia hope to make their mark on the local fashion scene through their keen sense of fashion and streetwear. Tyara Putri interviewed Evelyn to get up close and personal with their newly launched fashion line, SYNDICATE.

What’s in a name?SYNDICATE literally means a group of individuals, like an organisation that works to promote something all the members have in common. For a long time we’ve been interested in the Sartorialist couture which portrays the edgy street fashion trends. We were so inspired by what we saw we wanted to do our part to contribute and be a part of that scene. So the look of this line came from our passion for street-wear, and this is what inspired us to give it the name SYNDICATE.

When did SYNDICATE debut?Last May, we finally launched our brand with a mini-collection of limited-edition little black dress at a Jakarta Fashion Food and Festival 2010 event in the Harris Hotel.

As a fashion graduate, what

Made in Indonesia Gadget

can you tell us about the trends in fashion nowadays? It’s a bit hard to tell since everyone has different opinions about what’s in and what’s out in fashion, but

for me, fashion should be eclectic. Trends are always somewhat cyclical, but from our point of view, based on colour trends, detail applications, and also

international fashion trends, we think the next big fashion trend that going to be happening soon is a more military style, boyish, adventurous look. Big jackets, military colours, details like big pockets, studs, etc.

Back to SYNDICATE, what are you trying to say through your collection? We might describe SYNDICATE as edgy, sexy, androgynous, daring and flexible. Maybe that’s what we’re trying to say through our collection, that there are no borders in fashion. We also find our self a little different because we produce not only women’s apparel but also collection for men and children (Rp. 199,000 - 1,299,000).

Does SYNDICATE represent your own personal fashion sense?Yeah, basically SYNDICATE came from the way we like to dress.

On trial: Clinique Anti-Blemish Solutions 3-Step System

What it is: Clinique Anti-Blemish Solutions 3-Step SystemWhat it claims: Combining exfoliating and blemish-controlling agents to unclog pores, minimize excess oil, calm and soothe irritated skin and reduce the appearance of redness in three easy steps. How it works: The 3-step system has been specially formulated to work together. So first, wash your face with the cleansing foam to remove dirt and oil, then let the lotion do double-duty as it exfoliates and reduces the excess oil that can lead to more breakouts. With oil-absorbing powders, this mattifying lotion instantly eliminates shine and deflakes the surface to reveal clearer skin. Last, apply the moisturizer. The oil-free formula provides an appropriate level of comfort and hydration to minimise the dryness and peeling often associated with blemish treatments. Repeat these steps twice a day What we say: This skincare is great for those who rarely have time for a facial treatment. It takes less than five minutes to apply, so you’re less likely to skip a treatment if you’re tired on come home late at night or if you’re rushed in the morning. But since your skin turns over every 30 to 60 days, these products need to be used for several cycles to ensure that the maximum benefits are received. So as easy as it may seem, there’s no such thing as instant results. Our rating: 4/5Cost: Anti-Blemish Solutions Cleansing Foam (Rp. 280,000), Anti-Blemish Solutions Clarifying Lotion (Rp. 265,000), Anti-Blemish Solutions Clearing Moisturizer (Rp. 280,000)Where to buy: All Clinique counters; See page 43

All about Cellini:Designed to travel in style

Quality, affordability, lightweight and style. Just some of the things that have made the Cellini brand one of the leaders in the market.

In 1979 the Cellini brand was launched with the aim of providing functional and aesthetically pleasing luggage to the travelling consumer. 26 years on Cellini remains committed to this aim and consumers can choose from a wide variety of styles catering for every type of travel and lifestyle.

The essence of the Cellini philosophy is to continually innovate and inject new and functional ideas into the travel industry; to incorporate extra features into luggage to cater for organized packing of shoes, suits and all those small items that tend to disappear inside your suitcase.
