DISCLAIMER Jerry the Bear is a game that teaches you about diabetes.

Jerry the Bear does not teach you how to manage your diabetes. Always check with your doctor about your individual care. A dietician can help you with your own diet plan. CARE INSTRUCTIONS - Jerry is not machine washable! Spot clean, surface wash only! Do not soak

Jerry in water – he will be very sad! - Turn Jerry off before cleaning. - When cleaning Jerry’s fur, first remove excess dirt with a soft-bristled brush. - You can clean Jerry’s fur and Glucopal with an alcohol-based disinfecting

wipe, or a paper towelette wetted with isopropyl alcohol. Use a gentle dabbing motion to clean Jerry’s fur.

- You can also use a damp sponge or soft cloth, with cold water and a small amount of mild laundry detergent if necessary.

- Be careful to keep water away from Jerry’s Glucopal. This can cause irreparable damage to the electronics!

- Allow fabric to air dry completely before turning Jerry on. IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS & WARNINGS - Jerry contains a built-in rechargeable lithium ion battery. This battery should

only be replaced by Sproutel. - Do not disassemble Jerry! There are no user-serviceable parts inside. - Always charge Jerry with a computer or UL-listed power adapter. - Keep Jerry away form heat sources (fires, heaters) and high temperature

(strong, direct sunlight, in a vehicle in extremely hot weather). This will decrease his battery life.

- To reduce risk of fire or electric shock, do not throw Jerry against hard surfaces and do not expose Jerry to rain or moisture. If Jerry becomes wet, store in a cool, dry place for at least 48 hours. Do not attempt to turn Jerry on while he is wet.

Charging Jerry’s charging port is located at the bottom of his Glucopal. Charge Jerry with the included micro-USB cable and a computer or a power adapter with a USB outlet, such as a smartphone charger. Be careful to insert the included cable in the correct orientation. A full charge takes approximately 5 hours, yielding 4 hours of playtime or 1 week in sleep mode.

Tip: Turn Jerry off to help him charge faster!

Caution: Only use power adapters that are UL-certified. Look for the “UL listed” logo on the power adapter. Uncertified chargers may be unsafe and may damage Jerry.

GAMEPLAY

Jerry’s Journey Jerry was chosen to represent his school in the All Star Games, but he has a lot to learn before he’s ready! Follow Jerry and his guide, Navi the Bus, on this adventure through a series of diaries that Jerry has stored on his Glucopal.

Jerry and Navi travel through different worlds, meet new friends, and learn lessons in diabetes while training for the big competition!

After each diary entry, new tasks are assigned with fun activities and lessons on caring for Jerry. Complete these tasks to advance through Jerry’s diaries, and find out if Jerry will be able to master all of the skills he needs to win the All Star Games!

JERRY’S DIABETES Jerry is a game to simulate diabetes to facilitate hands-on learning. Some aspects of diabetes have been simplified to enhance the ease of learning concepts:

• Reactions to sugar and insulin are sped up so teachable moments can occur during each play session.

• Jerry only uses short-acting insulin. The differences between short-acting and long-acting insulin are complex. Jerry’s simulated blood sugar level is based only on short-acting insulin and carbohydrate intake.

Checking Jerry’s Blood Sugar Level

To check Jerry’s blood sugar level, squeeze one of his fingers. Jerry’s blood sugar level will be displayed on his Glucopal and he will tell you how he is feeling.

Symptomatic States

Jerry has 4 symptomatic states: very hypo-, hypo-, hyper-, and very hyperglycemic. Jerry will speak his symptoms when symptomatic or when his blood sugar is checked.

If Jerry’s blood sugar level reaches an extreme (35 mg/dL or 450 mg/dL) and he is not fed or dosed insulin within 5 minutes, Jerry’s blood sugar level will reset to a non-extreme level.

10

Jerry’s Blood Sugar Ranges Jerry’s simulated diabetes uses some commonly accepted blood sugar ranges. These ranges are specific to Jerry only, and this is not a recommendation for acceptable blood sugar levels.

If Jerry’s blood sugar level goes out of range, he will reset back to a value between hypo and hyper. This is randomized to promote teachable moments.

Carb Counting with Jerry Jerry uses a “Dot Method” to simplify carb counting. This makes it easy to understand the correlation between sugar and insulin. Every 5 carbs represents one dot of food. For every dot of food that Jerry eats he will need one dot of insulin.

Dosing Insulin You can dose Jerry with insulin using his insulin pen or the pump on his Glucopal. Using Jerry’s Insulin Pen Hold Jerry’s insulin pen to one of his injection sites to bring up the dosing screen on Jerry’s Glucopal. Tap the arrows to dial a dosage and tap “OKAY.” You will be asked to confirm the number of dots.

Using Jerry’s Pump Tap the pump icon to bring up the dosing screen.

Fun Activity: Inserting a Pump Site You can add a pump site to Jerry! First, attach the adhesive to Jerry’s fur. Next, cut the tubing and tie a knot. On the left side of Jerry’s Glucopal there is a slot that you can tuck the knot behind!

Feeding Jerry

Build a plate of food for Jerry by slowly swiping his food cards, one by one, from the bottom of his mouth to the top of his nose. Make sure the center of the food card touches his mouth. It takes Jerry a moment to identify what you have given him!

A plate can have a maximum of four foods. Once a plate is complete, select whether the plate is a meal or a snack to feed Jerry.

Meals are Jerry’s primary source of food, and are generally larger plates with various foods. Meals can have either low or high carbs. High carb meals for Jerry range from 45 – 60 carbs.

Snacks for Jerry are generally smaller plates, in between meals. Snacks for Jerry are less than 25 carbs. Tip: To dose Jerry with a bolus of insulin before feeding him, we recommend planning a plate for Jerry by laying out his food cards. You can then count the total number of dots, and dose him with the corresponding dots of insulin.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Connecting Jerry to your computer or power adapter Connect Jerry to a computer or power adapter using the provided USB cable. Carefully check the alignment of the cable with Jerry’s Glucopal and don’t press too firmly! When connected, the green light on Jerry’s Glucopal should illuminate for about 3 seconds.

Date and time may need to be set twice This is normal! You may prompted to reset the date and time if Jerry’s Glucopal is off for a long period of time and his battery runs very low.

Jerry is not recognizing food Make sure you slowly swipe the center of Jerry’s food cards over his mouth. Please see page 12 for more detail.

Jerry’s Glucopal display is not responsive Jerry’s display is pressure sensitive and must be pressed with a light “tap” rather than a soft “touch”. This display is slightly different from smartphone touchscreens; using it is more like clicking a laptop track pad.

Jerry is not turning on Make sure Jerry is sitting upright when you try to turn him on. If the issue persists, then Jerry may not have enough power. Please plug him in to charge for 20 minutes before trying again.

Jerry’s Glucopal is frozen Press the reset button, located to the left of his micro-USB port. Use the tip of a pencil to reach this button.

Jerry’s Glucopal crashes If the message “Unfortunately Jerry has stopped” appears, click the “Start Jerry” icon to return to the home screen.
