Friends of the Library Corner

Greetings from your new Friends of the Library President, Katherine Inman. I am honored to help lead this very dedicated group of volunteers, who are committed to providing so much for the library. Do you know what the Friends provide to the library? As a rule, the Friends don’t pay utilities, salaries or buy general books. However, 99.9% of library activities are paid with Friends of the Library monies. That means any event (summer, youth, children, or adult) activity is paid by the Friends. In the last few years the amount has varied, but usually runs between $80,000 and $95,000 a year.

We make money by having book sales and charging for memberships. This year we are looking to add more business supported fund-raisers like the ones we currently do: Pastini’s Pasta-Thon and Block 15’s Beer of the Month. We are brainstorming new ideas and we welcome yours!

Our book sales are achieved thanks to many volunteers donating their time. We can always use more volunteers to help at these sales. Maybe you are already a volunteer, but would like to give more time. We welcome your participation and hope you will join us soon. For more information about joining, volunteering or to read more about our organization, please visit our website: http://friendsofthecbclibrary.org/.

Library Foundation Corner - Betty McCauley

Interview with Dr. JunkinsI can understand why Foundation members recommended that I interview Dr. Ed Junkins for Check-it-Out! He is a pediatrician, not a librarian, but his words give accolades to important guidance young people find in the library. Dr. Junkins is a board certified pediatrician and emergency physician at the Western University of Health Sciences. He teaches at the medical school there. He is a Master of Public Health (MPH) and was also a Public Health Officer in the US Public Health Service. Furthermore, he is on the Corvallis School Board, and as the new Boys and Girls Club Teen Center is being built, he is on the advisory committee for the Center, which is to be on the second floor of the building.

These are all good reasons to appreciate Dr. Junkins’ concerns with the lives of young people. As he explained, there are children who have had Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE), who have not had adequate adult role models, and are often alone. He described his own childhood experience with a working single mother. Fortunately there was a public library nearby, and young Eddie spent his Saturdays where a librarian took time to give him attention and find good things to do. He gives her credit for a childhood rich and fulfilling.

As I listened, it occurred to me that there are citizens of all ages who have similar needs for the library with helpful librarians. For example, some adults flounder for career directions, or there is an older generation that needs to catch up with youngsters who grew up with computers. We all find help and comfort at the reference desk. As Dr. Junkins said, “All ages benefit from a safe, quiet and nurturing environment.”

Volunteer Spotlight - Helper’s High - by Adrian Tepperman Our volunteers may not be surprised to hear that “psychologists have identified a typical state of euphoria reported by those engaged in charitable activity. They call it ‘helper’s high,’ and it’s based on the theory that giving produces endorphins in the brain that provide a mild version of a morphine high.” James Baraz’s article “The Helper’s High” goes on to explain that the positive energy that you feel from doing a good deed can act on your body in much the same way that exercise does, releasing endorphins that make you feel good naturally. That’s why the “rush” that good deed-doers sometimes experience after performing an altruistic act is referred to as the “helper’s high.” Article by James Baraz and Shohona Alexander https://greatergood.berkeley.edu/article/item/the_helpers_high

Please welcome our new volunteers who have completed orientation!
