HistoryThe Chenonceau chateau was built by thomas Bohier and overseen by his wife katherine Briçonnet.

Soon after the completion it was seized by king Francois 1, because Bohier couldn’t pay off his debts. Then his successor Henry ii presented the castle to his mistress diane de poitiers who made significant renovations and changes to the gardens.

Ten years later after the death of the king his widow catherine de médicis made diane de poitiers move to a different chateau and under the care of catherine de médicis made further renovations on the garden and chateau itself.

after catherine’s death in 1589 the fortunes of the castle were changed. After the occupancy of the widow of king henry the iii and the mistress of king henry the iv the chateau became less occupied and maintained. The duke of bourbon bought it and sold most of it’s contents and the castle itself.

The castle was sold to Claude Duplin, his wife gave new life to the castle and even managed to stop it from being destroyed during the revolution.
