A PUBLIC, AUTONOMOUS SCHOOL Charter schools are independently run public schools that are granted flexibility to meet children’s needs in return for accountability in keeping their promises to families and taxpayers. 2. HOW DO STUDENTS ENROLL IN A CHARTER SCHOOL? CHARTER SCHOOLS ARE PUBLIC SCHOOLS OF CHOICE. Students who wish to attend a charter school must apply. Charter schools must serve all students on a first-come-first-served basis. If there are more applicants than spots, a random lottery is held to select students. 3. WHAT IS A CHARTER SCHOOL AUTHORIZER/SPONSOR? AUTHORIZERS GRANT A SCHOOL ITS CHARTER Authorizers are the entities that decide who can start a charter school, set academic and operational expectations, and oversee school performance. Ninety percent of authorizers across the United States are local school districts. 4. HOW ARE CHARTER SCHOOLS FUNDED? CHARTER SCHOOLS ARE PUBLICLY FUNDED Like district public schools, charter schools are funded according to enrollment (also called average daily attendance or ADA), and receive funding from the district and the state according to the number of students attending. 5. HOW MANY CHARTER SCHOOLS ARE THERE? THERE ARE OVER 7,000 CHARTER SCHOOLS There are more than 7,000 charter schools located across 43 states and the District of Columbia. In 2017–18, charter school students were 10 percent or more of the enrollment in 214 school districts. WHAT IS A CHARTER SCHOOL? 6. WHAT TYPES OF DISTRICTS HAVE CHARTER SCHOOLS? CHARTER SCHOOLS ARE IN EVERY TYPE OF DISTRICT Just over half (4,000) of charter schools are in urban districts.
