The Charter for Compassion is a

cooperative effort to restore not onlycompassionate thinking but, more

importantly, compassionate action to

the center of religious, moral and

political life. Compassion is the

principled determination to put

ourselves in the shoes of the other,

and lies at the heart of all religious

and ethical systems.

Compassion in Action

Since the launch of the Charter for

Compassion in 2009, we have been

building a worldwide network of

individuals, partners, and

communities of every size who

share a kinship inspired by the idea

that compassionate actionsthe

actions that are the result of our

deep concern for our world and all

its inhabitantsare not only possible

but crucial to the well-being of our

species, our environment, and the

planet.

Membership Challenge

Those of us working behind the

scenes have been thrilled to

experience an amazing and

continuing momentum as the work

of the Charter has resonated withso many worldwide, but now we

need your help as we initiate our

first evermembership challenge. By

signing on as a member, you will be

expressing your commitment to our

ongoing efforts and helping to make

a difference.

Up to this point, we have relied on a

few generous friends to help

maintain our small staff and budget.

In the last year, however, weve

grown over 400%, increasing our

partners from 150 to 800 and our

Compassionate Cities participants

from 60 to 230, while our staff size

has remained the same. At the same

time, we have increased our online

presence, the writing and delivery of

reports and newsletters, the

facilitation of weekly conferencecalls that provide speakers and

discussions on a variety of topics,

and the many resources on our

websiteall of which help to

connect with people across all

boundaries to bring compassion to

life.

other ways.

How will your membership

help?

We need to increase our staff, refine

some of our online tool-kits,

develop and offer education

programs and online courses, and

assist the quickly increasing numberof cities, towns and countries who

want to become compassionate

communities. If youve been with us

during the last year, you have

witnessed our growth, and many of

you have benefited from our

outreach. We have great plans for

the next years, including establishing

geographic hubs for the Charters

work in several places in the world,supporting pilot projects of cities

working in collaboration across

geographic boundaries, offering

webinars on compassion, and

increasing our outreach to include

the development of new sectors in

the arts, social services, and

restorative justice.
