Crawford, a Tiger star from 1997-2000, is competing in

the 200m dash. This is the event that earned him Olympic gold in Athens, where he also won a silver medal with the 4x100m relay team and just missed a third medal after fi nishing fourth place in the 100m dash. While at Clemson, Crawford was a three-time NCAA champion in the 200m dash. Noted for on-the-track antics, he once raced a zebra and a giraffe in the 100m on FOX’s “Man vs. Beast.”

Padgett, currently a junior at Clemson, makes his Olympic debut as a member of the 4x100m relay team as well as fi rst alternate in the 100m dash. A six-time All-American, he was 2007 NCAA indoor champion in the 60m dash. Padgett has also claimed three ACC championships and two NCAA East Region championships in the 100m dash; he ranks fi rst in Clemson history in the 100m and is the NCAA record-holder in that event as well.

Away from track and fi eld, Greenville’s favorite cyclist is hitting the road in Beijing. George Hincapie – who made his Olympic debut in 1992 at the age of 18 – now has the distinction of being the only fi ve-time Olympic cyclist in U.S. history. Recognized as America’s top classics rider, Hincapie has numerous world championships,

national championships and professional victories to his credit. An eleven-time Tour de France veteran, Hincapie is the only teammate to have assisted Lance Armstrong in all seven of his TDF victories.

Adding splash to Team USA Swimming is Scott Spann Jr., son of former Greenvillian Scott Spann Sr. and grandson of Landrum resident Don Spann. Though Scott Sr. set several world and American records in the pool, the U.S. boycott of the Moscow Games dashed his own hopes for an Olympic gold; now, he’s cheering as his son heads to Beijing to compete in the 200m breaststroke with a qualifying time that’s the second-fastest ever by an American. (Now 20 and a student the University of Texas, Scott Jr. still holds the 10-and-under national record for the 100-meter breaststroke).

Watch WYFF Channel 4’s “Olympic Zone” for spots on these local hopefuls and other area athletes.

COOKING OVER THE OLYMPIC FLAMEAdam Fox is prepped for an exciting marathon session… in the

kitchen, that is. The local chef leapt at the chance to cook in Beijing’s Olympic

Village, a pipe dream made possible because his employer, Aramark, has catered the Games since 1968. The food service giant will serve 3.5 million meals over the 17-day event, with dishes prepared by Aramark chefs from the 18 countries where the company has operations. This massive undertaking provides healthy fuel not only for the athletes but also coaches, offi cials, media and other participants.

Fox, whose day job is sous chef for Aramark’s catering service at Furman University, applied for the Olympics assignment so he could experience fi rst-hand the excitement of being amidst the best athletes in the world. In addition to learning a little Chinese, he studied the customs and cultures of other countries to be sure his customer service is worthy of a gold medal.

The majestic 91,000-seat facility has been nicknamed the “Bird’s Nest” due to its prominent steel latticework. Here, 205 countries are expected to march in the Parade of Nations. The nations will march into the stadium in an order determined by Chinese characters, with two exceptions as per Olympic tradition – Greece will march fi rst, and host nation China will enter the stadium last.

• Led by coach “Jenny” Lang Ping – one of the most recognizable celebrities in China dating back to her days as the star of China’s gold medal winning team in 1994 – a resurgent USA Women’s Volleyball Team will play in its third match against Venezuela.

• Don’t miss triple world champion Tyson Gay, who ran the fastest 100m under any conditions (9.68) at the USA Olympic Trials, as he pursues the title of “World’s Fastest Man” in the 100m.

• Teenage track cycling prodigy Taylor Phinney has had two clear cycling role models to emulate: his father, Davis, was the fi rst American to win a stage of the Tour de France and his mother, Connie Carpenter-Phinney, won the fi rst Olympic women’s road race in Los Angeles in 1984. The next chapter for the Phinney family: Taylor chases a medal in the men’s individual pursuit fi nal.

• Who’s the “World’s Greatest Athlete?” It just may be reigning Olympic and world champion Roman Sebrle of the Czech Republic, who will face a strong challenge from his good friend and Athens silver medalist Bryan Clay in Day 1 of the two-day decathlon competition.

• One of the new additions to the Olympic program is marathon swimming, a grueling 10-kilometer (6.2 mile) open water race. The lone American entrant is Mark Warkentin, a 28-year-old from Santa Barbara, California, who’s the son of a former national decathlon champion.

• Think of it as the roller derby of bikes. BMX racing is one of the new events at the Olympics – an all-out, full-contact, eight-man race through a twisting course with plenty of jumps.

A milestone birthday was fast approaching when Audrey Kinsella of Asheville got a surprise phone call.

“You won!” the caller told her, and the prize – part of the Live it with Charter™ Sweepstakes – included an all-expense-paid trip to a Garth Brooks concert in Kansas City, Missouri.

“It really was fabulous,” Kinsella recalls, emphasizing the lavish accommodations, extra spending money and great seats Charter Communications provided for the show. And, by happy coincidence, the prize came just in time for her special celebration. “It was the best 50th birthday present I could’ve gotten!”

Sweepstakes such as this are just one part of Live it with Charter™, a member rewards program that allows customers to accrue and “spend” points based on their monthly bill.

There is no cost to participate; the more Charter products and services used, the more points and special perks earned.

Live it points can be used to enter a monthly travel sweepstakes with destinations such as Paris, Alaska or even the Nickelodean Holiday Inn Kidstravaganza, or redeemed for exclusive merchandise like hats, T-shirts, DVDs and more. Other options include

special offers on electronics and online shopping.

Live it with Charter™ is unique among cable providers, according to Brian Kryzanski, Charter’s Director of Customer Loyalty and Retention.

“We are the fi rst in the industry to have this type of program,” Kryzanski says. “We want to strengthen relationships and give something back to our most loyal customers. So far, it’s working very well.”

Participating in Live it with Charter™ couldn’t be simpler – or more satisfying – says Jeff Holtzclaw of Taylors.

“I just signed up and started accumulating points,” Holtzclaw says, and before long he won a PlayStation and a Sony digital camera. “It made a really nice Christmas for my son!”

A Charter customer for more than 14 years, Holtzclaw utilizes the company’s digital cable, high-speed Internet and telephone services.

And while he appreciates the benefi ts of Live it with Charter™ – “It was great getting such a nice gift,” he says – before winning he was already very satisfi ed with the products and services Charter provides.

Even without the sweepstakes, he says, “I’d be a Charter customer anyway.”
