Charlton & District Community Bank® Branch, in partnership with

the Community Enterprise™ Foundation has launched its 2014

Community Grants Program. There will not be an information

evening this year with the program now online.

The program enables community organisations with good ideas to

apply for funding from a pool of funds available to the local

community from the community bank’s profits. In 2014 it is

anticipated that there will be an allocation of more than $50,000 for

the program.

“Charlton & District Community Bank® Branch is proud to support

the local community, and the Community Grants Program should

enable many local organisations to develop significant projects”,

Bank chairman Robin McRae said. “ As well as smaller projects we

are looking for some major projects that will aid the development of

local communities and we hope that some of these will come

forward. We encourage all community groups and organisations with

ideas for improving the community to apply,” Mr McRae said. “ In

recent years we have extended our business interests to Birchip and

Boort and along with Charlton and Wycheproof we now have many

communities that can benefit.” Mr McRae added. “The board is

looking for quality applications and we will only fund quality

projects”.

The program will be coordinated by Community Enterprise

Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Bendigo Bank. Community

groups and organisations which develop and enhance Charlton &

Prince George can trace his ancestors to Charlton through his

mother, the Duchess of Cambridge.

Little Prince George may not have visited us here in Charlton but he

could trace a family connection all the way to us.

It seems that he has more in common with the average Aussie than

we thought. Thanks to his grandmother Carole Middleton he can

trace his roots to a 19th Century farm labourer from Kent, in

England’s southeast who on 2nd January 1840 was found guilty of

stealing three lambs to feed his starving family and handed the

obligatory sentence: transportation to Van Diemen’s Land.

The third in line to the throne’s ties are the result of a human drama

that in microcosm tells the story of the forging of Australia itself.

After the 101 day journey on the prison ship Asia, farm labourer

Samuel Hickmott started his new life in the young nation breaking

rocks on a chain gang. It would take him 10 years to win his

freedom.

From the penal island Samuel sailed to South Australia where he

met up with one of his four sons. Henry who with his young bride

Sophia Goldsmith had come out on the migrant ship Emily arriving

in Botany Bay on September 9th 1850. To start their new life they

made the arduous trip across the vast continent to the colony of

South Australia. Henry and Sophia, a tall dark and willowy woman,

the great-great-great aunt of Carole Middleton were to have three

children (Eliza, Emma and Henry Edward) before Sophia died in

fifth year of their marriage.

Samuel worked as a labourer and Henry sweated it out in the

brickworks in Mt Barker. When the Australian Gold Rush began

Samuel and Henry together with Henry Edward travelled the 300

miles southwest overland to Clunes where father and son worked all

hours as miners, labourers and brickmakers until Samuels’s death.

Henry and Henry Edward moved to Charlton and Henry Edward

married Elizabeth Ann Owen of Kingower on 24th April 1877. At

Charlton they eventually bought a farm and established a brick

making business and Henry Edward would go on to become a

successful building and roads contractor. Henry Edward and

Elizabeth sold this Charlton farm (10 of their 12 children were born

in Charlton) and he and his family moved to Lalbert where they

lived for the next eighteen years. In 1909 Henry and Elizabeth sold

their land at Lalbert and sailed to Western Australia where they

purchased a farm at Pingelly. (Three of their grown-up children -

William Henry, John Edward and Edith Olive - declined to go with

their family and stayed in Victoria). Henry Edward was elected as

the Member for Pingelly in the Western Australian Parliament on

21st October 1914 and held the seat for 9 years. Elizabeth died

during a visit to Ouyen in 1923. On Sunday 18 January 1931, Henry

Edward was killed when he was thrown from a cart on their property

at Pingelly WA.

The three siblings – Eliza, Emma and Henry Edward were Prince

George’s first cousins, five times removed and although the lineage

is “watered down” the 12 children and their numerous descendants

have a right to claim kinship with the future king.

Article & photos by Jenny Pollard

The ninety-ninth commemoration of the ANZAC landings at

Gallipoli saw a continued tradition of strong communal support in

Charlton last Friday as all ages joined to mark the occasion which

serves as one of Australia’s most revered days.

From guest speaker Captain Steve Ellis to the many school

representatives, the generational recognition of Australian

involvement in global conflicts – past and present – continues to grow

as was evidenced by the ever increasing attendance at this year’s

event.

With a vastly increased number of wreaths and bouquets adorning the

plinth of the Charlton monument, flowers were laid in memory of

relatives, and friends – both local and from further afield – who

served in campaigns abroad or were on active service at home.

There can be no greater poignancy than knowing that many of the

First World War enlistments were the same age as the school captains

who laid wreaths and read the 23 Psalm at the Anzac ceremony.

An important addition to this year’s march was the inclusion of local

representatives of the Red Cross, which marks its centenary in 2014.

Established following the outbreak of the Great War in August 1914,

the Red Cross is looking towards celebrating its rich history

throughout this centenary year.

Accompanied by the martial sounds of the Charlton / Wycheproof

Band the parade – comprising R.S.L. members, school students, and

those who honoured family members - then marched in formation

from the monument to the Shire Hall to the applause from the large

crowd which lined both sides of the road.

Over the past sixteen years the Charlton R.S.L. Sub Branch has been

fortunate to enjoy guest speakers supplied by Puckapunyal, and 2014

was no different with Captain Steve Ellis presenting the Anzac Day

address.

Captain Ellis began his speech by noting the challenges experienced

by two World War 1 soldiers as taken from a shared diary which

recorded their involvement at the Gallipoli landing. “These men did

not receive awards for their amazing acts of bravery, though to me

they are heroes” said Captain Ellis.

“We can these men’s contributions by trying to live in the manner

they would have expected from us.”

Captain Ellis also gave recognition to all those who fell in conflicts

from the Boer War through to East Timor, Iraq and Afghanistan.

“The men and women who forged the ANZAC spirit made sure that

those who led them earned their respect. They all understood the

values of independence, freedom and fairness and – above all –

possessed a willingness to defend these things if need be – because

freedom only survives as long as people are willing to defend it.”

Councilor David Pollard also drew on the qualities synonymous with

the Australian ethos in battle – referring to the four granite pillars at

Isurava on the Kokoda Track emblazoned with the words –

Endurance, Courage, Mateship and Sacrifice.

Music from the Charlton / Wycheproof Band, the Charlton Choir, led

by Gill Gretgrix and a short piece of reflective music, plus the

inclusion of the Australian and New Zealand national anthems were

also a part of the formal ceremony.

President of the Charlton R.S.L. Sub Branch, Mr. Ken Jones also paid

a special tribute to the two remaining active World War II veterans

who marched in last Friday’s parade – 90 year old Mr. Ian Elder and

89 year old Mr. Ian Cameron. The remaining World War II veterans -

Mr. Vic Arundell, Mr. Fred Peverill and Mr. Frank Mulquiny – while

still financial members, are no longer active within the Sub Branch.

The morning concluded with music from the Band before the crowd

adjourned to the Club room for refreshments and a chance to peruse

the extensive memorabilia collection in the R.S.L. archives.

Charlton R.S.L. Sub Branch members, along with the Charlton community assemble in front of the memorial before the service.

Pictured before the march are (l-r) Ian Pierce of Jeffcott, Judy Bird and

Gordon Risk.

Club Inc always willing to assist when asked without hesitation

including his exclamatory service as our Tournament Secretary.

The Committee and Members of the Charlton Bowling Club Inc.

together with family and friends congratulates Russell on his

achievement of becoming a Super Veteran; we appreciate your

commitment to us and the sport of bowls.

Be Proud, We are.

The April meeting of the Country Women’s Association Branch in Charlton

(Cabbaritta) once again was productive, and complimented by fun and fellowship

generated by the competition theme for the night.

Our craft Leader Janet Stafford is working hard to coordinate all the entries we will be

contributing to the East Wimmera Group Craft Exhibition which will be held in Marnoo

on 9 – 10 May. Such an event highlights our members have many and diverse talents

and skills found in in what the CWA now calls “creative arts”.

Our competition for the night was a Wedding Memento. What a popular topic!

Everyone had lots of recollections about their weddings. A number of the weddings

occurred more than 45 years ago and the local Charlton weddings were quite a delve

into history. The weddings ranged from a full service in Latin to an outdoor service by

a celebrant. The outfits were amazing. Our President Eily brought her wedding dress, a

bridesmaid dress and parasol and her going away outfit. This generated a lot of

reminiscences about what had happened to other members wedding outfits. One

wedding dress had been cut up to make christening robes for the subsequent children.

The attached photo illustrates the diversity of mementos – a glomesh purse to accompany the going away outfit, an artificial floral head piece

as the wedding occurred at Easter and there were no fresh flowers available, two photographs of brides (I will let the readers guess who they

are), a cotton high waisted “hippy style” wedding dress, a short veil and headpiece to balance a long train on the wedding dress, a silver plate a

wedding present, wedding photo albums and a handmade felted wrap for an outdoor wedding.

On 19 May our next meeting reverts to the daytime slot. We will be celebrating the Cabbaritta branch birthday with a picnic lunch after

visiting John Picoli (the Spanner Man) at Barraport.

Some players and committee from the Charlton Football Club were

involved with the Appeal for the Royal Childrens Hospital which the

Maternal & Child Health Centre/Playgroup organise each year prior

to Easter.

This group has, in recent years, been relying on fewer members and

others in the community to conduct the run. Hayley Soulsby, one of

the organisers, was happy to have several players and committeemen

take part in the Appeal with the girls from the Centre.

Acknowledgments to Chris Livingston (volunteer runner), Craig

Walsh and Chris Thompson (Fire Truck drivers), who volunteer their

time each year for both Appeal nights; and to Leanne Gretgrix and the

playgroup Mum’s for selling raffle tickets. Altogether , a great

community effort for a worthy cause.

On Tues 15th and Weds 16th, runners followed the Fire-brigade

vehicles around the town in order to door knock for donations for the

Good Friday Appeal. Pictured just prior to beginning the run are

players Aaron Walklate, Ben Eckersley, Rhys Thompson & Kris

Clifford.

All were very willing participants along with committee members that

night and the one before.

The people of Charlton were generous with their donations, and even

though many were absent, those who were able to, donated a total of

$2583.85. Together with collection tins throughout the year at local

businesses, and an Easter raffle, Charlton raised a total of $5613.48.

Well done Charlton!

Note: Congratulations to the Easter raffle winners. Kathy Rogan

won the large Easter rabbit, and Stewart James won the Chocolate

hamper.

Loddon Mallee residents reported 119 scams to Consumer Affairs

Victoria last year, with the highest number of reports coming from

the Greater Bendigo area.

Australians lost more than $93 million to scams in 2012 - but the real

figure is likely to be much higher, because so many scams are not

reported.

People living across the Loddon Mallee can get handy tips to avoid

common scams by watching a fun, informative series of short videos

called Stevie’s Scam School, developed by Consumer Affairs

Victoria.

The free series is available online and features Stevie, an animated

‘reformed scammer’. He explains romance, lottery, online selling,

rebate, rental and investment scams.

Anybody can fall for a scam, but there are certain things you can do

to protect yourself:

Don’t give your financial details to

anyone you don’t know or trust.

Don’t respond to unsolicited emails,

texts or phone calls requesting

personal information.

Be aware that banks and other

legitimate companies will never ask

for your personal details by email.

Do not provide an up-front payment to a stranger via money order or

wire transfer.

North Central Financial Services Ltd company secretary, John

Harley has announced that there are still some shares available in

the Community Bank. Over recent years the bank has declared

dividends of 7c per share and in 2013 5c per share that was fully

franked. When franking is factored in, this is a return of over 7%

per share.

If there are an potential shareholders interested they should contact

the company secretary on 0427 701379.

NEW WAY OF BUYING SHARES IN THE FUTURE

NCFS Ltd will shortly introduce the Low Volume Method of

trading its shares.

All companies have shares issued in them. These shares are able to

be traded, i.e. bought and sold by share traders, owners or any

interested parties at some stage in the life of the company.

The Bendigo and Adelaide Bank Community Bank® companies are

no different.

Shares are issued in the company and are able to be bought and sold

i.e. traded, subject to the share ownership restrictions in the

company’s constitution.

A Low Volume Market is an unlicensed financial market approved

and regulated by the Corporations Law (Low Volume Financial

Markets) Exemption Notice 2003. ASIC (Australian Security and

Investment Commission) is responsible for administering the Low

Volume Market exemption notice.

Characteristics that make a market in Community Bank® company

shares unique are:

* One shareholder, one vote constitutions.

* Shareholder limit of 10% of issued capital for individuals and

related entities.

* 20% capping of available profits for return to shareholders via

dividend.

* Investors must posses a ‘close connection’ with the community

serviced by the company*.

* The number of shareholders in the Community Bank® company

must meet the minimum requirement for the company (Base

Number Restriction)*

There are many advantages to both the Community Bank®

Company and the investors in a Low Volume Market structure for

trading shares.

Advantages to the investor:

* A more transparent process for investors trading in the market

than an informal ‘notice board’ system

* Shareholders have access to trade history and price

details of previous trades. This can help investors when determining

a share price for trading.

* Lower costs to shareholders trading in the market.

Professional brokers are not required to perform trades on the

market. However, investors may incur a cost if they wish to seek

independent legal or financial advice.

Advantages to the Community Bank® company:

* Reduced regulatory reporting obligations than those required

through a stock exchange which means fewer reports to be

submitted to regulatory authorities.

* Minimal cost to maintain which means that the Community

Bank® company is not spending large amounts of funds operating

the market.

* The market framework is provided by the Corporations (Low

Volume Financial Markets) Exemption Notice 2003.

* The company has the protection of the Community Bank® model.

A company listed on a stock exchange is not permitted to have Base

Number provisions.

Further details will be provided in the future but in the meantime if

you want to buy shares in this successful community company

please contact the company secretary.

Boston Curry was guest speaker at the Charlton Action for World

development’s AGM meeting on Monday April 28 at The East

Charlton Hotel.

The idea for the journey began when Boston was helping his dad

Steve built a mud brick wall. They decided they’d cycle from

Sydney to Cairns, a distance of about 2,500 kilometres.

They knew it would be an enriching experience but when Boston’s

mum Ben left them at Sydney to head home reality hit them! With

the support team gone the journey suddenly took on an uphill

character and they began to question their motives. Why did we

decide to do this?

But they soon settled into a routine, riding in the relatively cool of

the early morning and seeking the air-conditioned comfort of a

library, or the shade of a tree, to escape the heat of midday.

On the positive side Boston said it was great to be in touch with the

elements, to feel part of the environment and not just see it as you fly

past in a car or bus or train.

He said it was a test of patience and endurance for what would take

20 to 25 minutes in a car and looked a tiny distance on the map, took

you 3 hours on a bike.

But he said the best thing about it for him was the chance to spend

time with his dad. They agreed that it was not just a physical

journey they were embarking on. It was a spiritual journey – a

journey back to God.

Boston said they met some wonderful people on the road. The

mango man was one fellow they ran into a few times who shared

more than just fresh and juicy mangoes. Another cyclist told them

when they were discussing the best time to be riding “There’s no bad

time to go bike-riding.”

They found that when you leave your comfort zone you’re open to

all experiences, stopping to meet and greet people on the road and at

the end of a day’s ride. They were bowled over by the kindness and

hospitality of strangers.

Boston’s 85 year old grandfather joined them on the last 3 days of

the ride on his recliner bike – one where you lie back but you still

have to do the pedalling!

40 kilometres from their destination on one of Queensland’s

notorious log bridges Boston came to grief. Steve was ahead of him.

He’d managed to stay on the log but Boston said it came up so

suddenly all he could see were the gaps between the logs and that’s

what his wheel found. Over he went and his chin hit the deck!

He thought a band aid would fix it but after fainting three times at

the nearest house he needed more than a band aid and ended up at

the hospital where he was born.

Boston was an inspiring speaker and as he shared his feelings and

experiences the group were left with much to ponder.

Year 12 Chemistry student, Hayley Patullo, recently travelled to La

Trobe University at Bendigo to undertake a program called VCE

Instrumental Chemistry.

The information and experience gained from this day allowed her to

evaluate the suitability of techniques and instruments used in

chemical analyses, as required by the Unit 3 course outline. It also

gave Hayley an opportunity to use equipment unavailable at school,

as well as to interact with Chemistry students from Boort P-12

College.

A variety of commercial soft drink samples were analysed using High

Performance Liquid Chromatography to determine caffeine

concentrations. A UV-Vis. Spectrophotometer was used to determine

food dye concentrations in an unknown sample and the features of an

Atomic Absorption

Spectroscope and Gas

Chromatograph was

shown and demonstrated

to students.

The day was very

informative and provided

an excellent opportunity

to look over a tertiary

institute and consider

possibilities for future

studies.

On Wednesday 26th February Charlton College Year 7 students went

to Boort for a 2 day Orientation Camp. Their first task being to set up

our tents with the assistance of the year 10 class. They found that

some were more proficient at it than others!! The year 10 students

then had a variety of team building activities for them to undertake.

The activities involved water, brain power and strength. Those

groups that worked together definitely found it easier to succeed.

They had some time to themselves during the evening. During this

time they fished, went on the jumping pillow, swam, lazed around

and went for a walk. The grassy banks of the lake were truly

appreciated.

The wind got up a little later in the night and some tents required a

little maintenance (better pegging!!) Emily and Sharlie’s tent

definitely benefited from this.

It was an early awakening the next morning when someone’s music

began at 5.15am!! Luckily all seemed to be able to get back to sleep.

For those willing to challenge themselves, the morning began with a

brisk jog – Claudia’s pacing being much faster than Mr McIntyre’s!!

On return all the troups underwent a fitness circuit and a variety of

energy zapping games. Thankfully a scrumptious egg and bacon

breakfast was waiting when they finished. Some decided to take their

tent down, and then ‘pretended’ to be incapable of fitting it in the

bag, hey Charlie, Ziah and Tyson!

Never fear though Xanthe and

Lara were out to prove themselves

highly capable! Sucked in girls!

The VET Sport and Recreation

students arrived shortly after this

and they provided the Year 7’s

with a variety of games requiring

cooperation. This group were great

motivators.

The Sport and Recreation student

assisted them to take their tents

down before they returned to

school.

Whitley College recently launched the James Rapley Memorial

Scholarship. It is for students from a rural background who are

studying Engineering or Science at the University of

Melbourne. James Rapley was a former resident of Whitley College

who was tragically killed in Los Angeles in December 2013. His

family wanted to honour their son and felt that the establishment of a

Scholarship, to assist with tertiary education tuition and

accommodation fees, was a good way to do so. They have seen that

transitioning from Secondary School to University, whilst at the

same time moving from a rural environment to the city, is a

mammoth step without, at the same time, having to find part-time

employment to pay for living expenses.

In accepting his award, Mathew expressed his sincere gratitude to

James’ family, and added that, like their son, he also hopes to

complete a Masters’ degree in Electrical Engineering after his

Bachelor of Science.

Charlton College is proud of, and commends Mathew, on this well-

deserved award.

On Saturday 29 March I attended the Case Competition at the

University of Melbourne, the first event of Kwong Lee Dow Young

Scholars program held this year. Over three hundred students

travelled from Melbourne, regional Victoria and also interstate.

There were eight cases covering different disciplines including

Commerce, Health, Science, Law, Humanities, Food Science,

Architecture and Urban Planning, and Engineering. The Topics

ranged from 'who owns the past?’ Museums, Antiquities, Looting

and Restitution' to 'Public Health: Planning for a future influenza

pandemic'.

We were allocated to the Food Science case: 'Understanding the

science of food, eating, flavour and health', and worked in randomly

selected groups of 5 or 6, with facilitator Dr Anneline Padayachee.

The case was about a new food company 'Goodness Wrapped Up'

trying to break into the gourmet ready-to-eat meal market with pre-

packaged vegetables, targeting professional people in mid-20s and

30s who wish to experience the fine dining experience at home. Our

task was to determine the vegetables, packaging, and methods of

promotion under a budget of $20 000, within a time frame of 3

hours. Our group identified the issues as public health (obesity),

competition with existing

well-known brands, and

impact on the environment.

We had a pizza lunch while

working on the case,

and were allowed 1 hour of

computer lab access to

prepare for the 8 min.

PowerPoint presentation.

Some good ideas were

developed within our group,

including

bio-degradable packaging, ads by Jamie Oliver, menu and nutrition

booklets inside the package, transportation of local produce and co-

operation with Tupperware. However every other team had come up

with brilliant solutions as well, some even used groceries as props,

and we met a few very talented public speakers. I realized that

putting theory into practice is important and found the SWOT

(strength weakness opportunity threat analysis) especially useful

when dealing with an issue. It was quite an academic experience and

a great learning opportunity!

Nine Year 9 students and 2 staff from Charlton

College travelled to Anglesea on Monday 24th of

March – Thursday 27th of March, 2014. On surf

camp we went to the beach every day and we

learnt how to surf by practising the pop up meth-

od, the starting method and some tricks we could

do when we were confident enough. On the sec-

ond day we did the initiative course which was

down at the river. The first challenge we had to do

was find our way to the first checkpoint and try to

collect a container that was on a pole in the mid-

dle of the river. At first we had no idea what to do

but the instructor showed us a method using the

rope and the piece of bungie cord. Next we had to

fill up a pole with water which had little holes in

it. We got saturated but we quickly got the next

checkpoint which was hidden on the floating ball

in the pipe. My favourite part of the initiative

course was making the raft. We made the raft out

of tin drums, rope and tarp. We then had to row

the raft all of the way back to where we started.

On Wednesday we went surfing and we went to

Torquay to the surfing museum and to go shop-

ping. I also liked going to Bells beach. The sand

was surprising rocky and the surf was huge! On

the last day we didn’t go surfing but we did a surf

carnival. We played flags and we learnt how to

body surf. I really enjoyed looking in the rock

pools because we found about four starfish. I

stood up a few times on the surfboard and I was

happy to say that we nearly all did. I did find surf-

ing hard and I swallowed a lot of water. It was

also very tiring on Tuesday and Wednesday be-

cause the waves were really big. This camp was

fun and exciting and I do encourage the year nines

for next year to go because it was a lot of fun and

it was a great experience. Thankyou to Miss Har-

dy and Damo for taking us on the camp

Charlton Rotary Club has again supported Charlton College by assisting three

students in undertaking a 3 day ‘Science Experience’ at a tertiary institute of

their choice. Earlier this year Lily Gao and Justin Olive spent time at RMIT and

Melina Jablonka went to the Clayton campus of Monash University. All three

recently attended a Rotary club meeting where they spoke to members about

their time spent at the two Universities. The students related in some detail the

broad range of activities undertaken and their enthusiasm for the experience was

clearly evident. Lily, Melina, and Justin enjoyed the opportunity to mix with

students from a wide range of schools and felt it was a great introduction to life

at a University. Charlton College is very grateful to our local Rotary Club for its

ongoing support of this scheme and, its worth was certainly highlighted in the

feedback provided by this year’s participants. Justin Olive, Lily Gao, Melina Jablonka and Elizabeth Whykes

Bereavement Thank You

On March 24th 2014 at the Greenslopes Private Hospital

Brisbane, Tess Lloyd, aged 29 lost her 4 year battle with

brain cancer. Tess was the much loved granddaughter of

Dawn and George Parish, darling daughter to Jenny Parish Lloyd and

Colin Lloyd, adored sister to April and Mia Lloyd, partner to Adam

Leigh and devoted mother to 5 year old Livi. She was also much

loved by her aunts and uncles, her cousins and friends. The Parish family and in particular Dawn and George would like to

say a most heartfelt thanks to the Charlton community for their cards,

flowers, food and messages of love and sympathy. In particular a

huge thank you to those who have donated money to the Cure Brain

Cancer foundation which is dedicated to researching treatment

and finding a cure for brain cancer. Brain cancer kills more children

than any other cancer. It is also the leading cause of cancer death in

adults aged under 40 in Australia. Yet very little is known about brain

cancer, its causes or how to treat it. Unfortunately and perplexingly

brain cancer research receives

very little federal

government funding so there a

great reliance on fundraising in

the community to

support research to find a cure. A

continued commitment to raising

money for this insidious disease

is something that the Parish

family will maintain in Tess's memory.

To donate in Tess's memory and to learn more go to https://

www.curebraincancer.org.au/ and click on the Donate button.

Jenny has asked us to pass on her grateful thanks to you all for your

comforting messages. She intends to send a personal message via the

Charlton newsletter from her immediate family when she is able. Tess was a beautiful young woman who leaves us with many special

and loving memories. We are grateful for the times we had with her

and again thank you for your kindness and comfort.

Centenary of WW1.

The Charlton Cemetery Trust would like to make the community

aware of a “Centenary Poppy Tile” that is being made available as a

grave marker for those who served in WW1. The Greater

Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust, in conjunction with the RSL, have

created a decorative kit which includes 2 small highly glazed white

porcelain tiles with a striking red Flanders poppy printed on the raised

surface. The self-adhesive poppy tile may be fixed to a headstone or

cremation niche. The second tile from the kit may be fixed to a home

letterbox or gatepost to signify that this family have links to the First

World War. The kit retails for around $10.

War Graves.

The Trust also has information regarding the role of the Office of

Australian War Graves in commemorating the unmarked graves of

war veterans.

Plaque Refurbishment.

The Charlton Cemetery Trust can make arrangements to have badly

weathered brass plaques in the lawn section refurbished.

If you require any information on the above, please contact:-

Glenda Litton (Secretary of the Charlton Cemetery Trust)

Ph: 54911244 or [email protected]

Hi again as we smell the smoke of burning wood fires, and start to

retreat from the cold and wind we celebrated the 90th birthday of our

friend and member Ian Elder. We also welcome Elaine Donaldson as

our Program Officer.

The April meeting saw an attendance of forty six with twenty one

apologies some perhaps migrate north for a while to stay warm I

suspect, sounds like a good idea. Our morning was bright and

cheerful with catch up over a cuppa. We welcomed a very interesting

Guest speaker Annette Robertson from Wedderburn who has a

fascinating past working for quite a time as a Nurse in Outback

Western Australia. She spoke of her earlier Nursing life, of being in

the Blackstone Community and areas outside of Alice Springs, at

times as a sole practicing nurse with her catchment covering

hundreds of miles/ kilometres an area she said was the size of

Tasmania. There was a need to be, quoting the often used term (multi

skilled) which was to prove and understatement.

She had to learn the languages at least in part of the Aboriginal

groups with whom she worked, the cultural do’s and don’ts, the

overall survival skill needed to simply live in the outback isolation

and of course to be able to drive and maintain a 4wheel drive vehicle

as well as learn to run the radio system. There was the task of

attending to a varying numbers of patients with a large diversity of

issues often including organising the Royal Flying Doctor for

emergencies and the daily tasks which included co-ordinating

supplies coming from great distance. She spoke of witchety grubs,

and rabbits as part of the menu, and the shortage of fresh fruit and

vegetables, with canned food seen as inappropriate as it creates

rubbish and can openers were in scarce supply. Annette said that she

cannot stand the smell of rabbit cooking to this very day. Other tasks

included operating generators and issues with time zones as her area

was near the border, this contributed to further logistical problems

relating to arrival times of planes for mail, food and any other

supplies. All this was done in isolation from fellow health

professionals for much of the time, except for the use of outback radio

communication which was a life saving necessity a very interesting

presentation our thanks to Annette.

#10 They only go about 20 kilometres before they overheat,

breakdown or run out of fuel.

#9 Only the owner knows how to operate the door to get in or out.

#8 It is difficult to drive fast with all the fencing tools, greasy rags,

ropes, chains, syringes, buckets, boots, nuts and bolts, containers,

empty cans and loose papers in the cab and around your feet.

#7 It takes too long to start the thing, and the smoke coming up

through the rusted-out floor clouds your vision.

#6 The Border Collie / Kelpie on the toolbox looks pretty mean.

#5 They're too easy to spot. The description might go something like

this: The driver's side door is red, the passenger side door is green, the

right front fender is yellow and the owners name is painted across the

door etc.

#4 The large round bale in the back makes it hard to see if you're

being chased. You could use the mirrors if they weren't cracked and

covered with duct tape and spiders webs.

#3 Top speed is approximately 60 Km per hour.

#2 Who wants to steal a truck that needs a year's worth of

maintenance, u- joints, $3,000 in body work, tail-lights, new

windshield and the seat springs sticking into your backside?

#1 It is hard to commit a crime and then slip away with everyone

waving at you

The members have set up the Centenary window display in North

Central Panel beaters and it looks great. There is interesting histo-

ry of the Branch since it's inception in 1915.

Thank you to all who have gathered display items. There is a Red

Cross hosted Market in Swan Hill on World Red Cross day May

8th. from 10.00 AM at the Clock Tower if anyone is interested in

going along.

We are also sewing up and stuffing a number of unfinished Trau-

ma Teddies from Melbourne and there will be a working bee at

the next meeting, May 13th. at the Uniting Church Fellowship

room.

The members also proudly joined the Anzac day march this year

A big thank you to the community for their generosity during the

March Appeal. A total of $ 1800.00 was collected and we are

most grateful to you all.

A big thank you also to the members of the OASIS group and

their helpers who did the "foot slugging" to collect these most

needed funds for those less fortunate folk who are supported by

the many Red Cross programs. .

As there was only one person attended the April morning.

we will need to discuss the future and/or relevance of

continuing.

Please think about this if you are interested in keeping the

Community kitchen going. Next meeting May 19th. 10 AM-
