Notes:

1. Change of date for the first Eastway meeting2. Thruxton, Eastway #1, Preston and Milton Keynes are Saturdays3. We will be enforcing Rule Number One, viz. machines must not have any sharp sticky-out bits,

most notably at the front. This includes chainrings, which is another way of saying that anymachine with its chainset out the front must have a chainguard, including those with a singlechainring. Competitors who fail to equip their machinery thus will get a yellow card; a secondyellow card will mean you will not be permitted to compete. As long as you don’t use ridiculouslyhuge chainrings, suitable items are available from HPV-Heaven or your friendly neighbourhoodHP Velotechnik dealer - Kinetics and Bikefix.

4. We will also be coming down hard on those committing the crime of Lack of Visible Numbers. You have been warned!

5. We also STRONGLY recommend that those on unfaired bikes use elbow guards, and that everyonehas a rear-view mirror.

basically means one can get in without moving any part of the fairing, and is proving ratherunpopular with the hordes of tail-faired low racer owners that make up the majority of the entry ofthis event, and rightly so in my not-so-humble opinion. Otherwise one could take a machine likeDean Peterson’s Rotator Coyote (below), remove the side-screens and be in the same class assomeone on an unfaired bike…

The Editor Throws Himself Off The Channel Tunnel

Contact-O-Matic Part Two

The sharp-eyed will note that I now have a newe-mail address to go with my super-duperbroadband connection, which [email protected] Quiet, you rabbleat the back!

Out Of Vision

Another well-known recumbent manufacturer,ATP, who make bikes under the Vision name, has bitten the dust. Rumours were circulatingas long ago as last September, and sadly theyturned out to be true in the end. The lastremaining stock has recently been auctionedoff.

New Organi[s/z]ation

This being the World Recumbent RacingAssocation. This is what it is for:

Currently there are a number of recordsorganizations for Bicycle records. The UCIrecords records for all standard upright bikeswith no aerodynamic modifications. The IHPVArecords absolute records for any type of humanpowered vehicle.

The World Recumbent Racing Association hasbeen organized to recognize the accomplish-ments of non-faired recumbent bicycle racers, and to keep a record of those accomplishments. As there was previously no organization thatrecords these feats, the WRRA is in the uniqueposition to begin this task. Separate recordscategories will be available for Men and Womenin 3 different age categories each. In addition, records for unfaired, tail cone, and nose conerecumbent vehicles will be recorded.

Note that the WRRA does not organize, sanction, insure or oversee events or recordattempts. The WRRA exists only to recordoutstanding achievements on recumbentbicycles and insure that these achievementswere accomplished in a consistent and fairmanner. All recorded records will be availablesolely on this web site - http://www.recumbents.com/wrra/

This has been instigated by Sean Costin, agentleman well-known and well-respected in theHPV community, aided and abetted by WarrenBeauchamp and your humble Editor. We’re nottrying to usurp the IHPVA, or anybody else forthat matter, merely recording the efforts ofpeople which might otherwise be forgotten.

New Circuit

Paul London writes: “ I attended a very goodmeeting about the new cycle track to be built inEast Kent, it’s planned to be finished late 2005and be open for business in 2006. I can’tremember when we are due to host a EuropeanChampionships but IMHO it looks like it couldbe a very suitable venue for our needs.

The main circuit is to be 3.3 km and can also beconfigured for 2 smaller circuits of 2.1 km and1.3 km - 6 m width with 8 m start/finish straight.Steepest gradient 1:40.  They had a fancycomputer presentation showing a ride round atcycling speed - the eyeline was a couple of feettoo high though - I almost got vertigo!  It will bein a country park setting with camping available- Deal and Sandwich are the nearest localtowns and are both cycle friendly andpictureskew ☺  It’s also only about 5 miles fromDover and the ferries, but with a nice big hill inthe way to slow the Dutch down a bit.

Though it’s still in the hands of the South EastEngland Development Agency they intend topass on sufficient funds to allow the subsequentmanagers operate an affordable venue - beingfrom BHPC I asked how much it would cost touse!

After the meeting closed I had a chat with thechap who represents the cycling groups on thepublic consultation side and the projectengineer for SEEDA. I gave them copies of ourBrighton programme and they both said anevent such as that is what they hoped to attractby building the venue. I will keep an eye onfuture developments and keep you informed - Iexpect a site meeting will be arranged in thespring if anyone’s interested.”

New Book

The long-awaited third edition of BicyclingScience has finally hit the streets, and a reviewcopy my doormat. Hurrah! First impression isthat it marks a considerable improvement overv2.0, and I shall write more fully of it next timeround. Though I have heard that a certainformer BHPC Chairman is not entirely uncriticalof the tome, and recommends instead thesecond edition of Bicycle Design, by MikeBurrows oops what a giveaway…

Note to Prof Wilson: that’s the Virtual Edge, though, not the Kyle Edge.

New Booklet

That selfsame ex-BHPC Chairman points out acouple of rather embarrassing errors in the newedition of So You Want To Build An HPV.Firstly, Bicycling Books are no longer in Acton, having been located in Hereford for five years -164 Eign Street, Hereford, HR4 0AP, Tel: + 44(0) 1432 340 666, Fax: + 44 (0) 1432 340 665,

e-mail: [email protected], web:http://www.bikebook.demon.co.uk/

Secondly, a manufacturer is unaccountablymissing from Appendix C, and yes, thatmanufacturer is Burrows Engineering Mega-Global Corporation, Inc. I ought to shouldersome responsibility for these crimes, butremain grimly determined to blame it all onYoung Master Robert who, it would appear, hasfollowed up his Trans-USA bicycle antics with avisit to Captain Cook’s Mistake. Get a real job,you layabout!

Entertainment

If you haven’t yet seen this, do so immediately

This is non-negotiable. And if you are a‘melican, bow your head in shame for allowing itto be retitled. “Rendez-Vous” is no more difficultto spell or pronounce than “Philosopher”,y’know. Oh, hang on, you changed that too.Gagh! (dies).

I note also this recent T-shaped shirt frompopular beat combo turned amateur boxers TheWhite Stripes.

New Circumstances

Talking of jobs, if anyone knows of somethingsuitable for a mild-mannered bicycle-obsessedBabbage-Lackey… The Nut Mines wherein Itoil in the service of Evil Squirrels have recentlythanked us for our years of conscientiousservice by making 39.1% of us redundant. Bah!There is a possibility of further gainful employ-ment for the same Evil Squirrels, otherwise Ishall be begging on the streets come July.Though as Darth Stuart points out, this will allowme to ride my bike a bit more, and moreover willallow me to give my web site the makeover it’sbeen needing for the past year. In the mean-time, anyone wishing to commiserate may doso, courtesy of my pal Mr. Sunshine, here:http://www.ibbydare.com/nuts.html Thank you.

Thin

Thin is this issue, as the off-season has been, well, off, and even my Sinister Agents have littleto report. I’m off to Belgium to drink BEER. Later,d00dz.

Racing News

Newport – March 21st 2004

The Prologue

Wha-hey! While the wind outside is doing itsbest to blow the building into the Severnestuary, we are snug and if not warm ‘n’ toasty, then at least dry. The Newport velodrome is atriff place and seems to be less thoroughly hardwork than Manchester, as well as being a lotless slippery. Only two people fell off, and atleast one of these was as a result of a mechani-cal problem. A pity that this caused graunchand scrapery to his nice shiny new tailbox, butremember, Competitor X, sand it smooth andspray with clear lacquer…

Race 1

Andrew Sidwell, with his Toxy newly tail-boxedoops what a giveaway, leads off the line andafter some ten to fifteen minutes, is sitting onthe tail of second-placed Denise Wilson. Thusthe assembled faithless believe that it’s all overuntil, that is, Denise accelerates past the Toxyand puts the hammer down to such effect that

she makes the lap back up. And then takes thelead, getting it up to about half a lap before Andrewcloses it back to five seconds at the finish. RobGillions took a useful third place on his enormouslyheavy home-built machine Fool’s Gold, several lapsup on Dave Goodman’s new Challenge Hurricane.Multi-track honours went to Howard Yeomans, whose Trice Micro was running on sturdy Bromptontyres and making a noise like a Land-Rover, whilethe sole Junior rider present was Sacha Fournier, 6 th

overall and going great guns on another Hurricane.

Race 2

Three fully-faired and five unfaired machines in thisgroup, and at the end of the 45 minutes – clearly anevil Paul Davies-inspired plot to kill us all before thestart of the outdoor season – it was Ian Chattingtonin first, though only two laps ahead of AndrewWillmott. Among the unfaired of the parish, yourEditor, Darth Stuart and Neil Fleming remained in agroup for somewhere over 40 minutes before Neilput in an evil burst of acceleration and a couple oflaps at around 33 mph. This resulted in Stuart goinga lap down, while I managed to stay in touch until

Page 10: Charlie Jr. Fails To Prove That He Is Not A Servant Of Stan Spring 2004 Issue 76 · 2010. 11. 18. · Racing News 9 More Battle Mountain Jonathan Woolrich / Bill Cook / Larry Lem

10

there were two or three laps to go. Then thewretch Fleming did it again, this time managingto attach himself to the tail of Paul Davies. Bah!Iain James failed to finish for some unknownreason, while Pete Cox was troubled by chainmanagement difficulties, seemingly caused bythe Wyre’s frame being out of line.

New Stuff

Much beavering, or spending of money, overthe winter. Rob Gillions’ machine has a carbon

tailbox, and he says he’s scheming a completenew carbon machine for later in the year. TheGoodman brothers have a brace of newHurricanes, while Iain James’ home-brewed lowracer, the Heart Of Darkness sports an Optimatail fairing. And there’s Andrew’s tailbox as well, which I am obliged to mention a lot. Tailbox.

P.S. The Nice Man from the track is proposingto ask us back for a couple of their general trackmeets later in the year. Stay tuned…

A Few More Battle Mountain Notes

I flew on Sept 13th via Pittsburgh. It wasthe cheapest. Not a very good idea. Ispent 5 hours between flights and it’s avery long way to San Francisco. If I canafford to go in 2004 I’ll try Chicago/SaltLake City. I like SF and SLC is reputed tobe full of Mormons but it’s a bit closer, this side of BM and there should be littlescary city driving. (The Additor Eds: If Igo this time, I’ll go to Denver and comeback from Phoenix again. Or something.)

The car I hired next day was so anony-mous I don’t remember what it was(Chevrolet Cavalier - Ed.). It and I wereout of fuel at Winnemucca, so I stoppedoff at our favourite breakfast place, where I found George Georgiev, Sam,Andrea and the Kim part of the launchsystem. Another 60 miles and I met upwith Dave at the motel.

I managed to miss all the setting outcourse stuff this year. First comment-worthy activity was as chief catcher onMonday. It was eventful. Eivie wentright through the catch area at about30mph; Jason Erickson showed anamazing turn of speed and caught thefast braking bike. Mackie Martin wentstraight through as well but landed safelyon his landing gear. We’ve always jokedabout a bike going right through andcoasting to town. This time it nearlyhappened. Later in the week, BattleMountain Airport kindly lent us a pair offlashing lighted batons to wave, whichseemed to help.

Yes, Mars was a bit disappointing. Itlooked like a small pink splodge. Throughthe telescope it was a slightly larger pinksplodge. I don’t think Bill’s homebuiltreflector telescope has very good optics.

I was pleased to see my old friends Aland Alice Krause. They come fromEureka, California, home of all thingsKinetic Sculptural. They ran the Worldsthere ages ago, so we are fellow survi-vors. They have a healthy (?) attitude toBEER. BEER o’clock arrives about thesame time as for Dave and me, earlyafternoon. Dave and I started eating

lunch with a BEER. After a couple of dayswe had eaten so much we cut out thelunch. We had a designated team driverand team drunk each day.

Now for the machines.

Thom told me they took the wheelfairings off the Coslinger to reduce frontalarea. I don’t think that is a valid argu-ment, but I kept quiet.

The trick with backwards bikes is to crossthe steering wires/links. You have tobelieve what you see in the mirror andreact normally to it. I think the vomit-inducing bit about Gardner’s trike is thatyou can see the surroundings going by inthe wrong direction. In Eivie, I don’tthink you can see anything except themirror and a patch of sky. At any rate itis more reliable than cameras. Ask SeanCostin and Jeff Bales…

Not too significant, but the Frankensteinhas sprouted one of the Varna basedbubbles - they are getting quite common- as are Varna shells. ‘Frank’ and theCoyote are Easy Racer based. Therewere 2 Varnas and (I think) 2 clones.(There’s about another half-dozen Varnaclones been built in Portland, plus GarrieHill is building some from his set ofmoulds. Common as muck - Ed.)

The Peterson Tandem was an interestingpiece of kit – compact, with a fullytriangulated frame. Very easy to launch. However, it ‘featured’ solid tyres. It wentdown in a corner. Think on’t.

I didn’t see much of the Varna crash. Iwas standing next to Dave, but couldn’tsee over the sage brush. Sam told methey usually pay a lot of attention to tyreclearance. They have PTFE blocks thatshould meet the rim before the tyretouches anything. This time they missedthe check. Sam could smell burningrubber but he kept pushing. Ooops!

Tedious return journey. There are nosigns to Reno/Tahoe airport approachingfrom the east. My motel in SF did notmake my wake-up call and denied allknowledge of it. Nearly missed the plane.I got home to find I had been sacked inmy absence by Bromakin.

Well, I’m working again but I’ll have toscrimp and save to afford BM 2004. I’mtold Sean Costin may be organising.Sponsorship is being sought – so if youknow anyone with a few quid to spare…

For any plane nuts out there, the firebombers were Lockheed Neptunes. Navalturboprop submarine hunter with long tailbooms, an added noisy APU as big as anengine, and a big belly tank. The runwayat BM is long enough for a 727 but theloaded fire bombers took most of it to getoff the ground and then climbed largelydue to the curvature of the earth. Theywere very nippy when empty. On Fridayanother fire bomber was parked – a DC4.4 radial piston engines. One step moremodern than a Dakota.

They say the Dodge Ram is the only carwith instructions – ‘Dodge’ and the frontand ‘Ram’ on the back.

Bill Cook reports:

“I’m relieved to report that I’ve finallyfinished the DVD of the 2003 WorldHuman Powered Speed Challenge atBattle Mountain, Nevada. This year’s 80-minute DVD is somewhat more polishedthat last year’s version (my wife says itlooks better). It includes video of all themajor competitors, including the remark-able Slovenian team with their very fast“backwards” streamliner, Fast FreddyMarkham going more than 70 mph, andworld champion Sam Whittingham’sspectacular 80-mph crash in the VarnaDiablo. In addition, there are interviewswith Varna designer George Georgiev,Slovenian racer Matjaz Leskovar, adetailed description of Matt Weaver’s newstreamliner, a discussion how Steve Nashbuilt a beautiful and very fast streamlinerfor Joe Kochanowski in just two weeks, and much, much more including shortclips of several volunteers. At last, youcan see what Legs Larry actually lookslike (Porky - Ed.). Order form is onBarcroft Cycles web site - http://www.barcroftcycles.com/video%20bm%202003.html”

Larry Lem writes:

“Here is a trike prototype I’ve beenworking on since October. It was sup-posed to be done by the end of Novem-ber, then Christmas, then the end ofJanuary…

The idea was to take a Coslinger 1, getrid of the rear wheel, let the rider lay hishead back, allow the bottom of the fairingto come up to a point behind the rider’shead, and bring the top of the fairingdown from the knees to the same point. From the side, it would look more like aclassic airfoil. But from the top, it wouldlook more like the new laminar shapesthat get bigger until the shoulders. Nevermind the rear wheels hanging out in thebreeze...

I wanted to build something quick and simpleto see if any power could be generated fromsuch a laid-back position. The problem so far(in the one test I’ve had)(besides derailling 8times), is that I slide up the seat. There aremany things to fix, but I think it’s been asuccess so far, and need to get started onbuilding the real thing. Probably a tub bike. But I’ve never built a fairing before, so I don’tknow how many I’ll have to throw awaybefore I figure out what I’m doing.

No launch problems with a trike. Hopefullyno mid-course stability problems. No fallingover problems at the catch area. It will be acamera trike. I won’t need to worry aboutslow monitor/maintaining balance problemseither.

I also built this as I had never built FWDbefore. I needed to learn a few things -where the knees go, how skinny the forkneeds to be, whether the chain can go infront or behind the fork, how to take acassette body apart, clearance betweenbrake disk and left heel, clearancebetween derailleur and right heel (if Ileave the gears at the hub instead of atthe mid-drive)...Stuff like that.

I’d like to get a Powertap hub or SRMcrank - power and speed recording deviceshould I ever make a Battle Mountain-type attempt. Then I can see if my 200Wgets me 60 mph, then someone else’s400-600W ought to get them to...”
