Who was Charles Dickens?

Charles Dickens was an English author, writer and social analyst, who is thought to be the greatest novelist of the Victorian Period, and the creator of the most intriguing characters of all time.

Dickens’ full name is “Charles John Huffam Dickens”.

Early Life

Charles Dickens was born on the 7th in 1812 in Landport Portsmouth, England.

Dickens left school to work at a factory after his father was thrown in Debtor’s Prison.

Dickens’ formal education led to live a life of literacy with editing a weekly journal writing 15 books and many short stories.

How he became famous

Dickens in 1836 projected to fame after publishing “The Pickwick Papers”. After a few years Dickens was an intearnational, prominent writer of literacy.

Dickens was renowned for his good humour but also they way he could give a characters so much depth and detail.

Dickens was motivated on by the ideas of fairness a social equality and law. Charles Wrote books because he wanted to see a change in London.

Charles also wrote short book because he thought of them as full of humour and joy.

What Dickens Wrote?

Dickens wrote many famous novels some of which have been remade as movies and adapted for a comical or child friendly way.

Charles altogether wrote an outstanding 34 novels in his lifetime which have all become true treasures of literacy.

Charles was working on another novel when he died called the “Mystery of Edwin Rood”!

Christmas Carol

“A Christmas Carol” is the story of an old man who hated Christmas and was visited by three ghosts of Christmas past each explaining the values of Christmas. This book by Dickens was one of his showcase pieces, has been made into many movies including by Disney and also a Muppet’s Tale.

Oliver Twist

Oliver Twist is one of Dickens’ more tragic and evil stories. Based around a young orphan, Oliver, who lives a life of toil in a Workhouse. Oliver escapes to London, where he meets, Artful Dodger a young member of a juvenile gang of pickpockets. Oliver is then taken to Fagin the trainer of the boys, where he joins not knowing what the gang do. The story has been made into many movies and plays over the past.

Great Expectations is a story of Victorian literature based on an adolescent orphan named, Pip, it is a bildungsroman or coming of age novel. The book is set in the early 1800’s around the area of Kent and London.

Though Dickens never visited Australia he was particularly interested in “The land down under” As the Editor-Chief and ‘Conductor’ of a daily newspaper article of “Household Words” he wrote numerous articles about Australia.
