CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

This chapter presents background of the study,

questions of the research, objectives of the research,

important of the research, scope and limitation, and

definition of key terms, and organization of the study.

Each section is described as follows:

1.1. The Background of the Research

Essentially, the most difficult creature to

understand is a human because they always have secret

in their lives. As usual, they will keep and not allow

other people to know their problems because they feel

that it is not important to share their problems.

Furthermore, they are shy to share it. Regarding of the

impact because they cannot express their problems, they

become quieter, grumpier, do something strangely, and

can change their behavior in the future. Based on that

case, the theory that deals with human being is

1

Page 16: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

psychology. It is a theory which attempts to examine

the problem faced by human. Miller adds that (1974: 4)

psychology is a science that attempts, predicts,

controls, and explains human behavior (Salam, 2014:2).

Addition, Atkinson that psychology is a science that

observes and learns about human behavior (Minderope,

2011:3). Thus, psychology is a science that observes,

predicts, controls, and learns about human behavior. In

this case the science can help people to deal with the

problem.

This theory is developed by psychiatry named

Sigmund Freud (1856-1939). He states that psychology is

a science which can explain about the psyche structure

and personality of human. By developing it, psychology

can be associated to other knowledge. One of them is

literature. The relationship between psychology and

literature is the literary works which reflects psyche,

condition, and personality of human which is created by

2

Page 17: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

making story. Thus, the literary works can be analyzed

by using psychology perspective.

Literary work is a unique art work and it also has

beauty. It can be seen in several aspects, which are

the style of language, choice of words, the problem in

the story, the character in the story and others.

Minderop conves that the experts thought literary work

is a work that uses a beautiful language and has

different language from other works. The language of

literary work is unique because it has style of

language, symbol, and the sign of language or it can be

called literary devices (2011:73). Because of those

things, the literary work attracts many people to read

and feel curious to read and know more about the story

behind the creation of those. In literary works,

definitely characters exist and every character has

their characterization. Therefore, it makes literary

work is able to be analyzed by using psychology

perspective.

3

Page 18: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

The aspect of psychology in literary works can be

seen in the psychology of author and the character from

the story. According to Greibstein study of character

in literary work by adapting psychoanalytic method as

self-complete entities wholly within context of the

work (Budiman, 2011:5). Analyzing character in the

story by using psychology perspective, it can be looked

through the developing of the character. For instance,

the reason why particular character is bad, it can be

seen from the character live. Psychology has

relationship with psychoanalysis, because

psychoanalysis also discusses about psyche structure of

human. Asch (1959: 17) states that in psychology, there

is a theory that is psychoanalysis that decisive and

systematic explains the structure of the human psyche

(Salam, 2014:2). Thus psychoanalysis can be selected to

analyze a literary work.

Novel is one example of literary work that can be

analyzed by using psychoanalysis perspective. It has

4

Page 19: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

two aspect that builds story whic is intrinsic and

extrinsic. According to Kennedy (1983:89) novel is a

product of literary work that contains two aspect

intrinsic and extrinsic (plot, setting, character,

conflict, personality, point of view and others)

(Hasmiati, 2012:2). Those elements can be seen and

analyzed in many perspectives, especially

psychoanalysis.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is one

example of novel, written by J.K Rowling and published

by Bloomsbury in the United Kingdom, US and other

English-speaking countries on 16 July 2005 (Rowling,

J.K, 2005). This book is the sixth book of the Harry

Potter’s sequel. This book was adapted into film by

David Yates as a director and produced by Warner Bros

Picture and it was released in Canada, the UK, and the

US on July, 15 2009 (IMDb, 2014). The novel of Harry

Potter and the Half-Blood Prince has won several awards, such

as Winner of the British Book Awards, WH Smith Book of the Year 2006,

5

Page 20: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

Royal Mail Award for Scottish Children's Books for ages 8–12 in 2006 in UK

(Harry Potter, 2006). Not only the book but also the

film has won several awards and been nominated in

several award for film, which won ASCAP Award as Top Box

Office Film in 2010, MTV Movie Award as Best Villain “Tom Felton” in 2010,

and as Nomination Oscar as Best Achievement in Cinematography “Bruno

Delbonnel”  in 2010 (IMDb, 2014).

This series tells us about dark wizard “Lord

Voldemort” who has secreat life that influences his

character in life. It also tells us about the nasty

action of Voldemort such as, he did several murders, he

wanted to take control the magic world by destroying

the wizards who did not support him and demolishing

muggle (people who do not have power of magic) and he

was assisted by follower “Death Eaters” for his plans.

And the other hand, Harry Potter in his sixth year at

Hogwarts had journey with Professor. Dumbledore

(Headmaster of Hogwarts) revealed Lord Voldemort’s past

and found the horcux (the powerful object in which

6

Page 21: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

wizard or witch hidden their piece of soul for the

immortality) of him. He believed that if Harry Potter

knew more about Voldemort’s past, he would be easily to

beat Voldemort. Harry and Dumbledore’s journey began by

visiting the old house of Voldemort and orphanage where

he lived after Voldemort’s parents died. They also

visited the place where the hidden horcrux. On their

journey, Harry Potter found the secret life of

Voldemort and the reason why Voldemort became the dark

wizard.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince told us

more about the past of Voldemort and the reasons why he

became the dark wizard. Here, one by one the secret

life of Voldemort revealed. One of them is voldemort’s

father who was a muggle and his mother was a witch.

When Voldemort was still in the womb, her father left

her mother because he just realized that his wife was a

witch. Because of that, Voldemort hated muggle and

killed her father by using his hand. Voldemort began to

7

Page 22: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

learn about the dark magic because he desired to be

someone who was frightened by people and he wanted to

take control of wizard world. One of the nasty things

that Voldemort had ever done was making horcrux. To make

horcrux he had to kill someone in advance.

Based on the story above, the significant thing in

this novel was everything that Voldemort did deal with

his past. His experience about his past was bad, his

mother died when he was still baby, of course he lacked

of affection, when he lived in orphanage he had not

friends so he always made something bad or disturbed

his friends in orphanage by stealing the things of his

friends, he did several murder cases. Because of

several reasons, he became the cruelest dark wizard in

wizard world so the people frightened of him. Therefore

it can be inferred from the synopsis that his character

was bad and weird because he liked to kill people who

did not want to be his follower and fought him. He also

8

Page 23: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

had ambition in life to be powerful and immortal. He

also liked to be superior to everyone around him.

Based on the background above, the writer is eager

to analyze this novel because it has psychoanalysis

perspective in Voldemort. Psychoanalysis according to

Freud is the study of human’s mind which is influenced

by unconscious mind on the behavior. His study

emphasize that the childhood events can be potentially

influence the mental of someone. Psychoanalysis has

several basic fundamental; one of them is the

development of personality in person is determined by

events in early childhood. It matches with the

personality of Voldemort that he is influenced by

events that happen in early childhood. Thus, the writer

decides to use theory of psychoanalysis to analyze and

observe about Voldemort’s personality.

The psychoanalysis of Lord Voldemort in Harry

Potter and the Half-Blood Prince grabs attention of the

writer to be analyzed and observed. It is fascinating

9

Page 24: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

problem to be analyzed in psychoanalysis perspective by

using theory of Sigmund Freud. The writer is also

interested to analyzed novel as object of study because

novel has lots of elements that can be analyze in many

ways. It is hoped that this research will bring many

contributions in studying literary works, especially in

psychoanalysis point of view. In addition, as far as

the researcher’s knowledge, the research about

psychoanalysis of Lord Voldemort in Harry Potter and the Half-

Blood Prince has not been conducted yet.

1.2. The Questions of the Research

1.2.1 What is the character of Voldemort

potrayed in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince?

1.2.2 What is the Voldemort characterization

depicted in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince?

1.2.3 How do the characterization relate to

Voldemort’s life seen from psychoanalysis

approach?

10

Page 25: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

1.3 The Objectives of the Research

1.3.1 To reveal the character of Voldemort

depicted in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

1.3.2 To reveal the Voldemort characterization

depicted in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

1.3.3 To find out the relation of Voldemort’s

characterization and his life seen from

psychoanalysis

1.4. The Important of the Research

This research is hoped that it will bring benefit

for the writer and the reader who analyze about a

literary work. By reading this research, the reader

will understand about development of characterization

of Voldemort based on psychoanalysis perspective.

Besides, this research will expectedly increase the

interest of other researchers to do a similar kind of

research.

In addition, as far as the researcher’s knowledge,

the research about psychoanalysis of Lord Voldemort in

11

Page 26: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince novel by J.K Rowling is

still hard to find. Research on this novel will give

benefits because of offering some contribution on

literary study especially to give new information in

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince novel to further study.

Furthermore, this research will be able to be used as

an input for teachers and students in order to have a

better understanding about psychoanalysis approach in

the novel. It is also hoped that the readers can be

more interested in reading, understanding and enjoying

literary works.

1.5. Scope and Limitation

In this research, the writer’s scope deals with

the study of characterization based on psychoanalysis

approach. Furthermore, the writer just scopes the

analysis about Lord Voldemort characterization in Harry

Potter and the Half-Blood Prince novel by using theory of

psychoanalysis by Sigmund Freud. The data to support

this research are taken by analyzing the novel and the

12

Page 27: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

resource that related with the novel. The object of the

study is a novel Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

1.6. Definition of Key Terms

In Order to get understanding to avoid

misinterpretation, it presents several definitions of

key terms, those are as follow:

1.6.1 Lord Voldermort

Tom Marvolo Riddle is the real name of

Voldemort. That name has given by his mother

when Riddle was born. J.K. Rowling describes

Voldemort as antagonist character because he

always does anything that makes people suffer

and pain, for instance he makes people afraid

of him by killing and giving terror and he has

ambition in life is to become all-powerful and

immortal. He also likes to be superior to

everyone around him.

1.6.2 Character

13

Page 28: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

According to Abrams, character is the

name of literary genre display in particular

type of person (1999:32); Kennedy and Gioia

state that character is a person who lives in

a story (2007:73). Character has several

types, for instance antagonist, protagonist,

static, and dynamic.

1.6.3 Characterization

The method uses to describe the nature of

the character in a story (1967:3). There

are two methods to reveal it, direct (telling

and indirect (showing). Following Klarer, he

assumes that telling is a method which

describes character through the narrator

(2004:18-19). Abrams states that showing is a

method that the author lets the character

presents her or his personality by talking

and acting (1999:35).

1.6.4 Psychoanalysis

14

Page 29: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

Brenner mentions that psychoanalysis is a

scientific discipline which discusses about

human mental (Minderop, 2011:11); Eagleton

says that, Freud believes that human’s mind

is influenced by unconscious mind because

human personality is developed by human

experience (Minderop, 2011:13).

1.6.5 Id, ego, superego

Freud adds that the id is pulsi

reservoir and a source of psychic energy. Id

as psychic energy that force human to

fullfill the basic need, like eat, sexs, and

reject the pain or uncomfortable (Minderop,

2011:21). The Ego likes prime minister has

job to finish the problem that has relation

with reality and he also fulfills the

pleasure of human (Minderop, 2011:21). The

superego is a moral system, it as judge to

15

Page 30: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

judgment whether the action taken is right or

wrong (Fudyartanta, 2012:141).

1.7 Organization of the Research

The writer divides this thesis into five chapters.

Chapter one is the introduction which consists of the

background of the research, questions of the research,

the objectives of the research, the important of the

research, scope and limitation, definition of key

terms, and organization of the research. Chapter two is

the review of related literature that consists of

definitions that relate to the topic of this research.

Chapter three is the research methodology. Chapter four

is the analysis. And the last, chapter five is the

conclusion that is gained by the writer after doing

analysis.

16

Page 31: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter explains the review of related literature.

This chapter is divided into three sub headings. Those

are literature, character and psychoanalysis. Those

three sub headings are clarified as follows.

17

Page 32: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

2.1 Literature

Human’s life is able to be displayed through

literature. Literature is somewhat called imaginative

product of human’s thought. Thus, literature and

human’s life has been united for ages. Regarding of it,

literature is not able to be separated from human and

humanity concept. Almost all of the literature works

delineates human being life, such as love, friendship,

dignity, divinity, belief, and betray. Robert and

Jacobs (1986:3) adds that literature is related to the

truths of human life, it may be based on the situation

that have never occur and which may never occur (Elyla,

2010:7).

Moreover, literary works is creative product. It

can be seen from the choice of words, the plot of

story, and the character of story. Minderop conveys

that the experts thought literary work is a work that

uses a beatiful language and has different language

from other works. The language of literary work is

18

Page 33: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

unique because it has style of language, symbol, and

the sign of language or it can be called literary

devices (2011:73).

Literature is divided into two types, fiction and

non-fiction. Fiction deals with the actual events, such

as auto-biographies and non-fiction deals with the

untrue story or in short, it presents a made up story

according to author’s imagination, such as fantasy,

science fiction, and romance. In Klarer’s view, in the

eighteen century literary work has been classified into

three major, they are fiction, drama, and poetry

(2004:9). In fiction, novel is one product of literary

works.

2.1.1 Novel

The word, “novel” comes from Italy novella which

means news or new. Novel is a long story that describes

characters and events. It is one of in categories in

fiction. Work of novel deals with imaginary from the

author and it contains many pages. Abrams states that

19

Page 34: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

novel is work of fiction written in prose. It is a long

story which contains lot of pages (1999:190). Because

of its long, elements in novel are wider than elements

in a short story. . It has two aspect that builds story

whic is intrinsic and extrinsic. According to Kennedy

(1983:89) novel is a product of literary work that

contains two aspect intrinsic and extrinsic (plot,

setting, character, conflict, personality, point of

view and others) (Hasmiati, 2012:2). Based on the

theories of the experts above, novel is one of the

literary works that the story is long and contain lots

of pages. There are some aspects to build a novel:

intrinsic and extrinsic (plot, setting, character,

conflict, personality, point of view and so forth). The

elements of novel are able to be seen and analyzed in

many sides.

2.2 Character

Generally, a literary work especially fiction

(novel) has elements to develop the story. One of them

20

Page 35: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

is character. Character is one of the essential things

in a novel. The story will be useless if it does not

have character inside even though the story has a good

setting, plot, and theme. Following Potter explains

that character is a basic element in imaginative

literature (1967:1). Character means the person in a

story who describes in particular quality. Kennedy and

Gioia state that character is a person who lives in a

story (2007:73). Same as in the previous theory, Abrams

also adds that it is a person represented in narrative

work who sketches in a particular type. Character can

be interpreted in several ways, such as from what he or

she says what they do, or what another person says.

Abrams also describes that character can be interpreted

by inferences from what the person says (dialogue) and

what person does (action) (1999:32-33). Similar with

Abrams, Robert (1969:11-12) defines the character can

be inferenced by taking an action, thought, expression,

attitude, what she or he says and what he or she says

about him (Elyla, 2010:8). In this way, character is a

21

Page 36: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

person who lives in a story and sketches in a

particular situation and type of it can be seen in many

ways, such as what she or he says, what the people said

about him, expression, and attitude.

According to the several theories in the previous

paragraph about the meaning of character, furthermore

character is also classified into several types; the

character based on the role and based on the

development. Here, the kinds of character based on

role; protagonist is the essential character of the

story. It can be called as the main character. Like

Potter says that protagonist is always the focal point

of a story and forefront of the action (1967:7).

Actually, a protagonist is faced with conflict that

must be resolved. Robert and Jacobs (1986:136) state

that it is the central to do action and against an

antagonist (Elyla, 2010:8). In this way, protagonist is

a person as central character in a story who has

conflict with an antagonist; antagonist is an opposite

22

Page 37: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

of protagonist. It means that, an antagonist is an

obstacle the protagonist must overcome. It also can be

called as a rival protagonist. According to Potter,

antagonist is a person that opposes the protagonist

(1967:7). Robert and Jacobs (1986:139) says that

antagonist is a character who opposes the protagonist

and causes of the problem on particular situation

(Elyla, 2010: 9).

The character based on the development; static is

someone in a story who never changes, from the

beginning until the end of the story he or she does not

change. For example, if he or she in the beginning of

the story is a bad guy, in the final story he or she

will be a bad guy as well. Kennedy and Gioia say that

static is fixed character (2007:74). Thus, static

character is character which never changes over time or

fixed character; dynamic is someone in a story who does

change and he or she changes in attitude or outlook.

Kennedy and Gioia state that dynamic is a changing one

23

Page 38: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

(2007:73). So, dynamic character is a person who does

change in a story a result of the resolving problem,

and she or he changes in attitude and outlook.

2.3 Characterization

Based on the previously explanation about meaning

and types of character in fiction, furthermore

character also reveals in many methods, usually it is

called characterization. As Potter says that to

describe the nature of the character, it deals with the

concept of characterization. It is the process or

method by which the author uses to reveal or describe

the character personality in a story. He also mentions

that a number of methods of characterization to reveal

the person’s character by what he says and does his

speech, and his physical appearance (1967:3-4).

In addition to depict and present the character of

story, generally the author uses direct or indirect

method. Direct method is a method to depict character

directly, usually the author presents the character by

24

Page 39: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

telling (describing character by direct explanation

from the author). Following Klarer, he assumes that

telling is a method which describes character through

the narrator (2004:18-19). In aaddition, Minderop

states that it is a method to depict character in a

story by using direct explanation and comment from the

author (2010:76-77). Thus, telling is a method to

reveal the character in a story by using direct

explanation from the author. On the other hand, in

indirect method the author depicts the character by

giving change to the character to reveal his or her

character with dialogue and action. It can be called

showing. Abrams states that showing is a method that

the author lets the character present her or his

personality by talking and acting (1999:35). Similar

with Abrams, Klarer adds that this method shows the

character through his or her action and utterances

(2004:19).

25

Page 40: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

Therefore, characterization is a method to reveal

the personality of person in a story. There are two

method to reveal the character in a story, direct

(telling) and indirect (showing). Direct method is a

way to show the character by explaining from the

author, and indirect method is a way to describe the

character by dialogue and action.

2.4 Psychoanalysis Approach

Psychology is a study about human soul. This

theory was found by Sigmund Freud, he stated that

psychology is science which learns and observes about

human psyche. Following Atkinson (1996:7), he says that

psychology is a science to observe and analyze about

human psyche (Minderop, 2011:3). Miller adds that

(1974: 4) psychology is a science that attempts,

predicts, controls, and explains human behavior (Salam,

2014:2). Thus, psychology is science which learns about

human behavior and mental process faced by human.

26

Page 41: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

Psychology theory focuses on human personality

because personality of someone can influence behavior

and the way of thinking of human in society. Another

reason is human personality made by someone’s

experience. Minderop says that personality created by

experience of someone. So, it can influence someone’s

behavior in society (2011:4). He also adds there are

several factors that give effect for developing human

personality; past historical factor, contemporary

factor, innate factor, and environment factor

(2011:20). In practice, Freud uses psychoanalysis

approach for knowing personality of someone. According

to Diana and Sally emphasizs that Freud uses

psychoanalysis approach to reveal personality of

someone by hearing his experience or problems

(1985:485).

Psychoanalysis is a study about mental, behavior,

development, and experience about human. Brenner

(1969:11) mentions that psychoanalysis is a scientific

27

Page 42: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

discipline which discuss about human mental (Minderop,

2011:11). Holland psychoanalysis is a study of human

subjectivity about the mind way of thinking, dreaming,

imagining, wanting, and the hiding mind (1990:2). In

addition, Minderop adds that Freud develops

psychoanalysis method to find out the psyche problem

occurs, and he believes that psyche problem deals with

past and childhood experience (2011:10). Thus,

development of human personality and behavior can be

influenced by childhood experiences.

Talking about unconscious mind, it influences

human personality and behavior because people have

secret life and they consider keeping their secret in

unconscious. The unconscious mind is a place to save

felling, thought, pain, and memory. Most of the

contents in unconscious are the unpleasant feeling,

such as pain, anxiety, and conflict. Eagleton

(1996:437) says, Freud believes that human’s mind is

influenced by unconscious mind because human

28

Page 43: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

personality is developed by human experience. He also

describes human’s mind likes iceberg which contains the

secret of human, conflict, and several problems. So, he

thinks that unconscious mind is the key to understand

human personality. In addition, Minderop says that

human behavior is often influenced by the unconscious

trying to bring ourselves and behave without conscious

(2011:13). Therefore, this theory believes that

development of human personality is influenced by

unconscious mind and it means the secret life of human.

Moreover Minderop conveys that in unconscious mind

influences personality because understanding

personality of someone it has to observe deeper from

the hidden thought and symbolic sign of someone.

Besides the childhood experience, experience with

parents also influences the development of human

personality (2011:9).

Based on the theories that had been already

examined, it can be summarized that psychoanalysis is a

29

Page 44: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

branch of science of psychology which is developed by

Sigmund Freud. He uses psychoanalysis to reveal the

personality of someone by hearing his past. Study of

psychoanalysis focuses on development of personality

based on mental, behavior, development, and experience

of human. The ground of psychoanalysis is the childhood

experience that involves the development of human

personality and unconscious mind determines human

behavior. Here, unconscious mind is about unpleasant

felling, such as pain, anxiety, and conflict. Besides,

the childhood experience and unconscious mind,

experience with parents also influences the development

of human personality.

2.4.1 The Structure of Human Personality

The behaviour of human according to Freud is the

result of conflict that exists in human life. The

sources that influence the personality are the past

life of human, enviroment, and family. Freud mentions

that past life, enviroment, family, and congenital

30

Page 45: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

factor is affected the personality of human (Minderop,

2011:20). Besides, Freud believes that to know and

learn human personality not only can be seen in

something appears or the conscious of human, but it can

be seen also fron unconscious of human. Following Freud

to learn the human psyche cannot just see the problem

of consciusness that appears in surface, but there are

problems unconscious, repressed, or forgotten too

(Fudyartanta, 2012:132). Because of tha case Freud

creates the theory that explain about human personality

and divide it into three parts.

The Id is part of human’s personality and the

place in unconscious. The basic work of id is

satisfying the urges, needs, and desire. The id is like

the king that all the id needs must be fulfilled.

Freud adds that the id is pulsi reservoir and a source

of psychic energy. Id as psychic energy that force

human to fullfill the basic need, like eat, sexs, and

reject the pain or uncomfortable (Minderop, 2011:21).

31

Page 46: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

The characteristic of id is it is the system of human

that has been exist since their birth, it acts as the

driving force behind personality. The principles of id

are it works to seek the pleasure and avoid the

suffering. The nature of it is immoral because it is

dominated of pleasue, lust so to fulfill the desire

usually the id forces the human to do immoral thing,

the source of inscticts, and the id contains of desires

and feelings which are repressed (Fudyartanta,

2012:137). It can be imagined how terrible and

dangereous that his majority of human beings are

affected by id.

The ego locates between between the conscious and

unconscious. The working of the ego is trying to

fulfill the pleasure of human but he is limited by

reality. The Ego likes prime minister that has job to

finish the problem that has relation with reality and

he also fulfill the plasure of human (Minderop,

2011:21). Because the ego must face the reality, in

32

Page 47: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

every move it must be reality. So, it has to be

considered about the moral and appropriate action. It

helps human to consider themself whether they can

satisfy themselves without having to get into trouble

or suffering. The job of the ego is regulating,

recieving or rejecting the task which is given by the

id that correspondent to the real world.

The superego is the third system of human psyche,

it is the moral system. Becaus it is a moral system,

the superego has role as it takes control the authority

of moral in personality, it reflects the moral action

than the real action, it fights for the prefection than

pleasure, and the superego as judge to judgment whether

the action taken is right or wrong (Fudyartanta,

2012:141).

2.4.2 The Development of Oral Phase

This phase takes place during infacy and childhood

in the first year. At this stage, the child is totaly

dependent on the mother because the child needs food

33

Page 48: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

from mother. The mother duty at this phase is gives the

food for the child through breastfeeding. According to

Freud, he says that oral phase is the phase of babyhood

and childhood in first year which the role of mother is

important. On that phase mother has duty to feed by

breastfeeding. In that process, the bound between

mother and child is built. The child feels safe,

comfort, and dependence on his mother (Fudyartanta,

2012:164).

2.4.3 Anxiety

Every situation that makes people worry and

feeling threatened, it causes the people have the

feeling of anxiety. It is because they have problem

that is an obstacle to gain their purpose to achieve

something. Following Minderop, she states that several

conflicts and problems can obstruct the progress of

individuals to achieve goals and it is one the source

of anxiety. She also says that the threatened can be

34

Page 49: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

physic, psyche, and some unconfort feeling that causes

anxiety (2011:28).

2.4.4 Hatred

Feeling hatred has relationship with feeling angry

and jelousy. When people feeling hatred of something or

someone, they have desire to abolish the source of

feeling hatred. According to Krech (1974:479) hate has

relationship with angry and the trait that marks

felling of hatred is emerge the desire to kill or

destroy the source of hatred. He also adds that someone

always has feeling hatred and he or she will feel

satisfied if the object of hatred is destroyed

(Minderop, 2011:44).

2.5 Review of Previous Studies

The research used psychoanalysis approach as

theory had already done by several writer. Here,

examples of the research that uses psychoanalysis as

theory. First, the research comes from Nurul Hikmah

Maulanie (October, 5 2011), her title research is “An

35

Page 50: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

analysis of Esther’s psychopath problem in orphan film viewed from

psychoanalysis theory by Sigmund Freud”. She analyzed the

mental disorder that exist in one of character in film

Orphan “Esther”. She used theory psychoanalysis to

reveal the characteristic of mental disorder that

happened in Esther. The result of the research she found

that Esther is psychopath, it was proved by the

characteristic of her, such as often lie, lack of

empathy, aggressive, lack of remorse and feeling

guilty, and the failed of psychosexual stage.

Another example comes from Giovanny Mario (2012),

his title research is “A PSYCHOANALYSIS ON THE MAIN

CHARACTER AND THE AUTHOR OF SHERLOCK HOLMES: A STUDY IN

SCARLET”. Giovanny analyzed the characteristic of main

character and the relation between the author and

another character in a story by using psychoanalysis

perspective. From his analysis, he found the

characteristic of main character (Sherlock Holmes) is

selfish, perfectionist, and self-destructive. The main

36

Page 51: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

character also used the defense mechanism, such as

denial and reaction formation. The second result is

relation between the author and John Watson (friend of

Holmes) that shows similarity between the author and

John Watson. Both the author and John is a doctor, it

shows that the author wanted to be a part on story by

making himself as one of character in story and he also

shared his life experience in a story.

In this research, the writer analyzes Lord

Voldemort one of the character in novel Harry Potter

and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling by using

psychoanalysis approach. She analyzes the development

of character Lord Voldemort relates to his life. The

writer to analyze this research uses psychoanalysis as

theory because it help her to reveal the reason behind

the development is experienced by Lord Voldemort.

37

CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHOD

Research method is an essential part to conduct a

research because it is used as guideline in order to

get a systematic analysis. In this chapter, the writer

will describe about research methodology of how she

will analyze and find out the purpose of this research.

This chapter is divided in four subchapters. They are

The Nature of the Research, The Source of the Data, The

Data, and The Data Analysis.

3.1 The Nature of the Research

Research design is a plan to conduct the data to

be analyzed and it is made by the writer to guide for

analyzing data of the research. Besides that, it is

help for defining the data of the research clearly. By

the research design that is made by the researcher, it

is hoped the writer will be able to analyze the data

and get the purpose of this thesis. It means that the

38

Page 53: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

research analyzes data by describing in detail not in

the forms of numbers (or numeric) but they are in the

forms of words, phrases, or utterances or sentences.

Strauss emphasizes that qualitative method is a

research that result of the data is not obtained by

using statistical or measurement procedure (2007:11).

Addition Miles and Huberman explain that data from

qualitative research is the forms of words than

numbers, the sources of it from an evironment and it

also can help to understand the phenomena

chronologically (1992:1-2). In order to get something

new from literary work, the writer uses qualitative

research to analyze the data. Furthermore, the writer

uses theories; character, characterization and

psychoanalysis approach to analyze the data of this

research and utilizes descriptive qualitative method as

method to analyze and reveal the data.

39

Page 54: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

3.2 The Source of Data

In general, the data is taken and selected from

the novel Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K

Rowling that was published on July 15 2005. The data of

the research focoses on analyzing Lord Voldemort

3.2.1 The Main Data

In this paper the main data that the writer taken

is from novel Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling

that was published on July 16 2005. The data of the

research focuses on analyzing Lord Voldemort.

3.2.2 The Supporting Data

The supporting data used in this study is entirely

derived from written sources or library, such as books,

journals, articles, and internet sources. Besides, the

writer uses the theories to support analyzing the data,

such as theory of character, characterization, and

psychoanalysis approach that are in line with the

problem of the research.

40

Page 55: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

3.4 The Data Analysis

Beginning analysis novel Harry Potter and the Half-Blood

Prince, the writer uses theory of character combination

from Potter, Kennedy and Gioa, and Abrams to reveal the

character of Voldemort. Afterwards, the writer utilizes

the theory of characterization from Potter, Klarer, and

Abrams to look further deeper the method how the

Voldemort character builds in story. Besides, the

writer uses the theory of psychoanalysis by Sigmund

Freud to reveal the characterization of Voldemort.

The combination of theories at least in the

writer’s view to makes it easy and speed up the process

of classification of the Voldemort character. First,

the character of Voldemort analyzes into the kind of

character he which helped by the theory of character.

Next, the writer analyses about development of

characterization of Voldemort by using theory of

characterization. Then, the writer correlates the

41

Page 56: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

characterization of Voldemort with psychoanalysis

approach.

Data from this research analyses, sorts,

categorizes and processes based on theoretical

framework. There are some steps that will be applied to

analyze Voldemort character. The procedures of the data

analysis are: reading and comprehending the novel Harry

Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling., reading and

comprehending the character of Voldemort, analyzing the

character of Voldemort by using theory of character,

analyzing the characterization of Voldemort by using

theory of characterization, find out and analyze the

characterization of Voldemort by using Psychoanalysis

approach, and last, the writer summarize based on the

discussion

42

Page 57: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

CHAPTER IV

ANALYSIS

This chapter presents the analysis of the

characterization of Voldemort in Harry Potter and the Half-

Blood Prince uses the theory of characterization and

psychoanalysis. The first analysis, the writer analyzes

the character that portrays in Voldemort. The next is

she analyzes the characterization that depicts in

Voldemort. And the last is she analyzes the

characterization of Voldemort based on psychoanalysis

approach. Moreover, this analysis focuses on Voldemort

character who has past events that influence his

personality and character. The changing of Voldemort

character can be seen from his past.

43

Page 58: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

4.1 Character of Voldemort

Character is the person in a story who is

described in particular quality. Kennedy and Gioia

states that character is a person who lives in a story

(2007:73). Same with theory before, Abrams also adds

that it is a person represented in narrative work who

sketches in a particular type (1999:32). Based on the

theories, the writer finds Voldemort as character who

has important role in novel Harry Potter and the Half-Blood

Prince to be analyzed.

Moreover, character is defined into several types;

the character based on the role and based on the

development. The types of character based on the role

are protagonist and antagonist, and types of character

based on the development are static and dynamic. The

following is the analysis of character of Voldemort:

4.1.1 Antagonist

Voldemort is one of the characters who plays role

in the novel Harry Potter by J.K Rowling. He is

44

Page 59: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

described as figure that has bad character and

personality. His action makes him as bad character. He

always does anything that makes people suffer and pain,

for instance, he makes people afraid of him by killing

and giving terror. In addition, Voldemort is a person

who dislikes Harry Potter and he always tries to hamper

and murders him. He also causes a lot of mess and

problem in particular situation. Because of his action

and attitude, Voldemort is categorized as antagonist

character.

In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,

Voldemort is known as person who likes killing people.

He killed people for they are against of him and he

needed to kill them for his benefit. For example he

killed Amelia Bones, it is proved by statement of the

person who works in Ministry of Magic Cornelius Fudge:

“Amelia Bones. Head of the Department of Magical LawEnforcement. We think He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named may havemurdered her in person, because she was a very gifted witchand — and all the evidence was that she put up a realfight.”(HP6, 2005:1:13)

45

Page 60: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

Looking at this incident, it can be said that Voldemort

killed Amelia Bones because she tried to hamper and

offend Voldemort. Thus, he decided murdering Amelia

Bones because he disliked the effort of Amelia Bones

that try to againts him. Other example describes

Voldemort as killer when he studied in Hogwarts and

killed a girl who studied in there.

“……………….seven years at Hogwarts were marked by a numberof nasty incidents to which they were never satisfactorily linked, the most serious of which was, of course, the opening of theChamber of Secrets, which resulted in the death of a girl. Asyou know, Hagrid was wrongly accused of that crime.” (HP6,2005:17:362)

Besides, Voldemort who hampers main character Harry

potter has plans to kill him. He always makes plans to

abolish Harry Potter even he is a boy. The plans that

Voldemort makes always dangers Harry and people around

him. As Dumbledore says in dialogue below shows, this

Voldemort has many plans to kill Harry Potter and his

plans are very dangerous for him.

“……….. Harry, whom Lord Voldemort has already attempted tokill on a number of occasions, is in even greater danger now

46

Page 61: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

than the day when I left him upon your doorstep fifteen yearsago,…………” (HP6, 2005:3:55)

To support his plans to kill Harry Potter,

Voldemort had plans to steal the prophecy that

described the way to kill Harry Potter in the Ministry

of Magic. Voldemort gave order for Death Eaters to

steal it. Because of this incident, Harry Potter and

his friends in danger and they had to fight with Death

Eaters and Voldemort. From this incident, it can be

seen that, Voldemort does not care about something

happened with Harry Potter’s friends because his

obsession to kill him even Harry Potter’s friends in

danger. He also likes giving danger to Harry Potter’s

friends to see the suffering of Harry Potter and it is

one of the plans of Voldemort.

“………….. the mysterious recent disturbance at the Ministry ofMagic, duringwhich He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named was sighted once more.……… the Ministry have confirmed that the disturbancecentered on the fabled Hall of Prophecy.” (HP6,2005:3:39)“…………Said Mrs. Augusta Longbottom, “My grandson, Neville— a good friend of Harry Potter’s, incidentally, who fought the

47

Page 62: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

Death Eaters alongside him at the Ministry in June and —…”(HP6, 2005:3:41)

Moreover, He also liked to give pain for his followers.

For example, he gave command to Malfoy to kill

Dumbledore and he threatened Malfoy if he fails killing

Dumbledore, Voldemort would kill all of Malfoy family.

He did it because he wanted to give punishment Malfoy’s

father because he failed to do Voldemort’s order.

“I haven’t got any options!” said Malfoy, and he was suddenlywhite as Dumbledore. “I’ve got to do it! He’ll kill me! He’ll kill mywhole family!”(…..)No, you can’t,” said Malfoy, his wand hand shaking very badlyindeed. “Nobody can. He told me to do it or he’ll kill me. I’ve gotno choice.”(HP6, 2005:27:591)

4.1.2 Static

As the explanation above that explains Voldemort

is categorized as antagonist character. He had been

doing a lot of offense and he continued to do bad

things till he died. It can be seen, he killed Harry

Potter’s parents, many muggles, he gave order to his

followers Death Eaters to cause mess. Because of the

offences that were done by Lord Voldemort, he is

48

Page 63: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

categorized as static character because at the

beginning until the end he is consistence being cruel

character.

Especially in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood

prince, Voldemort had been doing a lot of offense when

he was a boy and he continued when he grows up. The

first offense he did when he was a boy, he killed a

rabbit of his friend in orphanage after he had argued

with his friend. Then, when summer outing he asked his

two friends to follow him enter the cave. After that,

after that his two friends never same again, they

became different. It is impossible if there no

something happened that time. Not only that things

happened when he was a boy, but he did offense when he

studied in Hogwarts. This incident happened when Riddle

opened the Chamber of Secret in Hogwarts and he needed

victim to be sacrificed, so he choose the girl and

killed her.

49

Page 64: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

Moreover, when he grew up, he involved many

problems. A lot offense was caused by him. For

instance, he killed his father by blaming his uncle

because he knew the fact that his father left his

mother when she got pregnant, he killed Hepzibah Smith

because he wanted to have the Hepzibah’s treasure, and

when he became a dark lord a lot of offences and crimes

had been done by him.

4.2 Characterization of Voldemort

Actually, Voldermort’s real name was Tom Marvolo

Riddle. This name was given by his mother before she

died. But right after he declared himself as a dark

wizard, he changed his name into Lord Voldermort.

Understanding characterization of Voldemort can be

looked from his experience when he was a boy until he

transforms “Dark Lord. By looking at his experience

from Dumbledore’s memory, the writer finds several

points that show he is a weird boy and he behaves

poorly. Analyzing characterization of Voldemort, the

50

Page 65: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

writer uses theories of characterization according to

the theories in the previous chapter.

4.2.1 Tom Riddle’s Childhood

Tom Marvolo Riddle is the real name of Voldemort.

That name has given by his mother when Riddle was born.

Unfortunately after the born Riddle, Merope (Riddle’s

mom) died, so Riddle lived in the orphanage. Losing his

parents, he did not know who his parent was and lived

in the orphanage was the basic reason of Riddle grew

into an odd boy and behaved poorly. Mrs. Cole who ran

the orphanage gave explanation about the behavior of

Riddle.

“He scares the other children.”“You mean he is a bully?” asked Dumbledore.“I think he must be,” said Mrs. Cole, frowning slightly, “but it’svery hard to catch him at it. There have been incidents. . . .Nasty things”(.....)“Billy Stubbs’s rabbit . . . well, Tom said he didn’t do it and Idon’t see how he could have done, but even so, it didn’t hangitself from the rafters, did it?”………… All I know is he and Billy had argued the day before.(HP6, 2005:13:267-268)

51

Page 66: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

The dialogue between Mrs. Cole and Dumbledore

tells the behavior of Riddle who is always scared

children in orphanage by doing the worst thing and

possibility he did bulling, unfortunately what Riddle

did is difficult to catch him at it. It is supported by

his action he killed Billy Stubbs’s rabbit, but he did

not admit that he was guilty. The other hand, Mrs. Cole

said that Riddle and Billy had argued the day before.

Riddle got angry and he disliked what Billy said or did

so he decided to kill Billy’s rabbit to vent his anger.

Besides incident when he killed Billy’s rabbit, he

also did the unpleasant thing to two his friends. The

incident happened when the summer outing, Riddle and

his two friends Benson and Bishop went into a cave,

after that, his two friends were never same again, they

became different. It is impossible if there no

something happened at the time. Once again Riddle did

something that makes his friends afraid of him.

“on the summer outing — we take them out, you know, once ayear, to the countryside or to the seaside — well, Amy Bensoand Dennis Bishop were never quite right afterwards, and all

52

Page 67: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

we ever got out of them was that they’d gone into a cave withTom Riddle. He swore they’d just gone exploring, but somethinghappened in there, I’m sure of it. And, well, there have been alot of things, funny things. . . .” (HP6, 2005:13:268)

Not only killing Billy’s rabbit and making his two

friends afraid of him, Riddle also stole his friends’

stuffs in orphanage. He stole yo-yo, a silver thimble,

and a rusty harmonica. This incident was known by

Dumbledore:

“Open the door,” said Dumbledore. (….)“Take it out,” said Dumbledore.Riddle took down the quaking box. He looked unnerved.“Is there anything in that box that you ought not to have?”asked Dumbledore.Riddle threw Dumbledore a long, clear, calculating look. “Yes, Isuppose so, sir,” he said finally, in an expressionless voice.“Open it,” said Dumbledore.Riddle took off the lid and tipped the contents onto his bedwithout looking at them. Harry, who had expected somethingmuch more exciting, saw a mess of small, everyday objects: ayo-yo, a silver thimble, and a tarnished mouth organ amongthem. ((HP6, 2005:13:273)

Based on the delineation above, the

characterization of Riddle is poor, he always does

something that makes friends afraid of him, gives bad

impact for them and he likes to take something that is

53

Page 68: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

not his. This is strengthened by his statement “………I

can make bad things happen to people who annoy me. I can make them

hurt if I want to.” (HP6:2005, 13:271). Tom’s desire to make

other people suffer and control them had been seen

since he was child.

4.2.2 Tom Riddle’s Adolescence

Since Riddle became student of Hogwarts, he was a

student who had attractive behavior, talented, polite,

charming, and thirst for knowledge, so many teachers

were interested in him. Utilizing his adorable, Riddle

gathered a group of friends who dedicated and loyal

with him. Although he had friends who were loyal to

him, Riddle did not have affection for them and he only

took advantage of them. It can be seen that even as a

young man, Riddle had desire to be boss, dominated

others and control. He also had plan to be a leader who

took control in everything and he wanted people to

honor, loyal and dedicated for him. The quotation below

was said by Dumbledore who describes the Riddle’s

fellow recruitment:

54

Page 69: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

“As he moved up the school, he gathered about him a group ofdedicated friends; I call them that, for want of a better term, although as I have already indicated, Riddle undoubtedly feltno affection for any of them……………...” (HP6,2005:17:361)

From the explanation before that Riddle had a

group, he and his group had contribution to commit

crimes in Hogwarts but their crimes never detected.

During seven years he studied in Hogwarts, many

terrible things happened in Hogwarts, one of them was

the death of student. This incident happened when

Riddle opened the Chamber of Secret in Hogwarts and he

needed victim to be sacrificed, so he chose the girl

and killed her. The delineation of the activities of

Riddle is portrayed by Dumbledore:

“Rigidly controlled by Riddle, they were never detected in openwrongdoing, although their seven years at Hogwarts weremarked by a number of nasty incidents to which they werenever satisfactorily linked, the most serious of which was, ofcourse, the opening of the Chamber of Secrets, which resultedin the death of a girl. As you know, Hagrid was wronglyaccused of that crime.” (HP6, 2005:17:362)

By looking the incidents happened in Hogwarts,

once again Riddle did crime and it same with what he

55

Page 70: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

did in orphanage. But the difference is he did not kill

animal, he killed a girl and the reason he killed a

girl to satisfy his desire. Thus, the nature of Riddle

is a figure that does anything to satisfy his desire by

doing the nasty things. Not only he killed a girl, but

he also killed his father and grandparents.

This incident happened when summer he was 16, he

left the orphanage to seek the place where his Gaunt

relatives live and his goal is to find out his parents.

After he found the place where his Gaunt relatives

live, he met his uncle who apparently he is Riddle

family who still alive. From his uncle, he knew the

fact about his parents. Evidently, his mother was a

witch and father was a muggle (non-wizard). Knowing

about it, Riddle was disappointed especially as he knew

that his father left his mother. The following is the

dialogue between Riddle and his uncle Morfin:

“I thought you was that Muggle,” whispered Morfin.“You look mighty like that Muggle.”“What Muggle?” said Riddle sharply.“That Muggle what my sister took a fancy to, that Muggle whatlives in the big house over the way,” said Morfin, and he spat

56

Page 71: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

unexpectedly upon the floor between them. “You look rightlike him. Riddle. But he’s older now, in ’e? He’s older’n you, nowI think on it. . . .” ……….“He come back, see,” he added stupidly.……….“Riddle came back?”“Ar, he left her, and serve her right, marrying filth!” saidMorfin, spitting on the floor again. “Robbed us,mind, before she ran off! Where’s the locket, eh, where’sSlytherin’s locket?” (HP6, 2005:17:365)

After he knew about the fact that his father left

his mother and never wanted Riddle to be his child,

Riddle had revenges plan to kill her father. It was

proved by finding of the three dead bodies in Little

Hangleton, Tom Riddle, Riddle’s mother and father. The

fact is Riddle killed them by making the incident

happened because of his uncle Morfin, so his uncle was

jailed. The fact that Riddle killed them is explained

by Dumbledore:

“So Voldemort stole Morfin’s wand and used it?” said Harry, sitting up straight.“That’s right,” said Dumbledore. “We have no memories to showus this, but I think we can be fairly sure what happened.Voldemort Stupefied his uncle, took his wand, and proceededacross the valley to ‘the big house over the way’ There hemurdered the Muggle man who had abandoned his witchmother, and, for good measure, his Muggle grandparents, thusobliterating the last of the unworthy Riddle line and revenginghimself upon the father who never wanted him. Then he

57

Page 72: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

returned to the Gaunt hovel, performed the complex bit ofmagic that would implant a false memory in his uncle’s mind, laid Morfin’s wand beside its unconscious owner, pocketed theancient ring he wore, and departed.” (HP6, 2005:17:367)

By looking the incident that was caused by Riddle,

it can be seen that he is under control of his anger

because he knows the fact that his father left his

mother and let his mother gave birth alone and died.

The feeling of hatred and angry push Riddle to execute

nasty thing by killing his father Tom Riddle and his

father’s parents. Therefore, the murder incident was

done by Riddle, it can be said that he is a figure who

likes to punish people who have hurt him or make him

anger and irritable. The punishments that given by

Riddle always make people suffer and the most serious

thing is killing them.

4.2.3 Tom Riddle after Hogwarts

When studied in Hogwarts, Tom Riddle was known as

smart student, charming and talented, because of it

everyone has huge expectation about him especially the

teachers in Hogwarts. They thought Riddle would have a

58

Page 73: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

good future because of his ability and achievement that

he had. As they know when Riddle studied in Hogwarts,

he was a perfect, Head Boy, winner of the Award of

Special Services to the School and top grades in every

examination that he had taken. Because of his

achievements Professor Slughorn suggested him to join

in Ministry of Magic. But, Riddle refused and chose to

work in Borgin and Burkes (a shop specializing in magic

stuff especially in dark magic). In Borgin and Burkes,

Riddle works as an intermediary to persuade the people

to sell their stuffs in Borgin and Burkes and he did

well. One day Riddle had a mission to go to Hepzibah

Smith’s house to persuade her for selling her stuff,

there was an incident happened there. Riddle killed

Hepzibah Smith after she showed her family treasure and

a heavy golden locket that had Slytherin’s mark.

Riddle’s face changed to be greedy expression ….. Harry

thought he saw a red gleam in his dark eyes. His greedy expression was

curiously mirrored on Hepzibah’s face (HP6, 2005:20456). The

dialogue below is described the incident happens:

59

Page 74: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

I want to show Mr. Riddle our finest treasure. . . . In fact, bringboth, while you’re at it. . . .”“I think you’ll like this, Tom. . . . Oh, if my family knew I wasshowing you. . . . They can’t wait to get their hands on this!”“I wonder whether you know what it is, Tom? Pick it up, have agood look!” whispered Hepzibah, “I think you’ll like this even more, Tom,” she whispered.(……)She slid back the fine filigree clasp and flipped open the box. There upon the smooth crimson velvet lay a heavy goldenlocket. (HP6, 2005:20:435-436)

After he visited at Smith’s house the next two

days, Hepzibah Smith died. Knowing this incident the

Ministry gave punishment Hockey a house-elf of Smith

because she gave poison in her master drink. In fact,

hockey was not the murder, the real murder was Riddle.

He used the same trick when he killed his father family

by blaming someone else became murderer. After Riddle

killed Smith then he stole the Smith’s treasure.

………….“Hokey the house-elf was convicted by the Ministry ofpoisoning her mistress’s evening cocoa by accident.”“Certainly, there are many similarities between this death andthat of the Riddles. In both cases, somebody else took theblame, someone who had a clear memory of having caused thedeath —”“Hokey confessed?”“She remembered putting something in her mistress’s cocoathat turned out not to be sugar, but a lethal and little-knownpoison,” said Dumbledore. “It was concluded that she had notmeant to do it, but being old and confused”

60

Page 75: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

“Voldemort modified her memory, just like he did with Morfin!(……)“By the time Hokey was convicted, Hepzibah’s family hadrealized that two of her greatest treasures were missing. (HP6,2005:20:438-439)

By looking the incident was caused by Riddle, it

can be looked that Riddle is a figure who likes doing

anything to grab what he want especially nasty thing

like murder. Riddle had already killed to steal a stuff

which he thought is fancy and important. This incident

happened when he was a boy stole the stuffs of his

friends in orphanage. Riddle who liked taking something

from other had seen when he was a boy. Besides, he

liked to bestow his mistake to others. Because of that

they suffered and it is the one of nature of Riddle who

likes make people suffer and feel pain.

4.2.4 Tom Riddle transforms being Lord Voldemort

After he murdered and grabbed the two treasures of

Hepzibah Smith, Riddle disappeared for a very long time

and there’s nobody knew about his. But when he was

back, he was not Tom Riddle anymore but Lord Voldemort,

61

Page 76: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

“They do not call me ‘Tom’ anymore,” he said. “These days, I am known as

—” (HP6, 2005:20:442). He chose Voldemort as his name

because it reflected himself as a dark wizard. The name

of Voldermort is derived from French, Voluer means

steal and mort means dead, so Voldermort means the man

who steals the death. (Colbert, 2006: 205). Tom Riddle

was not an innocent boy but he transformed being an

evil figure. He had desire to control people and the

world by killing and torturing them. He created himself

as the dreaded wizard by making terror anywhere. He

killed a lot of people to satisfy his desire and for

him killing is an amusement thing. For example, he

created horcrux (the place for soul to hide that makes

someone immortal) because he wanted to be immortal so

there’s nobody can defeat him and to make it he had to

kill people and he got that information from his

teacher Prof. Slughron:

“By an act of evil — the supreme act of evil. By committing murder. Killing rips the soul apart. The wizard intent upon creating a Horcrux would use the damage to his advantage: Hewould encase the torn portion —” (HP6, 2005:23:498)

62

Page 77: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

By analyzing from Prof. Slughron about horcrux, Riddle

became excited and he had desire to make it. Even

though Prof. Slughron warned him the dangers of making

it and it was the nasty thing because to make it,

someone had to kill people but Riddle did not care

about his Professor’s advice. Riddle had idea to make

six horcruxes it means that he had to kill six people to

support his plan. To support his plan, he started to

look for someone who can be made as sacrificial.

Because of his nasty idea, Riddle turned into murderer

just to achieve what he wants.

4.3 Characterization of Voldemort Based on

Psychoanalysis Approach

Tom Marvolo Riddle or who known as Lord Voldemort

is well-known as antagonist character. He always does

the things that make people suffer and have bad impact

for them. Voldemort commits to do something bad until

he died. Actually since he was born, he was just a boy

who had a special gift (wizard) but he used his special

gift in bad ways. On his development, he grew to be a

63

Page 78: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

figure who liked doing violation until he transformed

to become Lord Voldemort. By visiting his memories, the

writer finds the several points that make Tom Riddle

transforms into Lord Voldemort. Most of all he is

influenced by his past. Therefore, the writer analyzes

the characterization of Voldemort based on

psychoanalysis approach. In line with Freud, he

believes that psyche problem deals with past and

childhood experience (Minderop, 2011:10). Besides,

Brenner (1969:11) mentioned that psychoanalysis is a

scientific discipline which discuss about human mental

(Minderop, 2011:11). The followings below are analysis

the characterization of Voldemort based on

psychoanalysis approach:

As the explanation before, Tom Riddle since he was

born, he lost his parents. His father abandoned his

mother when she got pregnant Tom Riddle and his mother

died after Riddle born. Because of that situation Tom

Riddle spend their childhood in orphanage. On the

64

Page 79: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

development, Tom Riddle grew being an odd boy and

frightening. He liked disturbing his friends in

orphanage, till they were afraid of him, and he had

problem to interact with people. In that case, the

behavior and attitude of Riddle was caused because he

got less affection from his parents and he did not know

his parents. By viewing the condition of his family

history, it is clear that the development of his

characterization has relationship with his past.

According to Minderop, she says experience with parents

also influences the development of human personality

(2011:9).

The essential thing in development of the

personality of child, it depends on the relation with

mother. The child needs affection very much from his

mother especially during babyhood. According to Freud,

he says that oral phase is the phase of babyhood and

childhood in first year which the role of mother is

important. On that phase mother has duty to feed by

65

Page 80: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

breastfeeding. In that process bound between mother and

child is built. The child feels safe, comfort, and

dependence on his mother (2012:164).

Looking at the theory above, Riddle never got the

time with his mother and he felt so empty in deep down

his heart and also he got less affection. Thus, he

reflected unpleasant experience by disturbing and

scaring his friends in orphanage because he wanted to

let go what he felt when he was a child without

parents. For example, the worst thing that he had ever

done is he killed Billy’s Rabbit. Besides, Riddle was

not easy to believe with people, it is proved when he

refused assistance from Dumbledore to accompany him to

shop and when transformed being Dark Lord, he had

followers (Death Eaters) but he never trusted them, he

just took advantage from them. His feeling showed that

he felt not safe if he depended himself to people. What

he felt because of his past that he did not get a sense

66

Page 81: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

of security or protection of his parents so that he

feels no need to be protected from others.

Furthermore, the development of characterization

of Voldemort was still influenced by his past

especially his childhood. In this section, the writer

analyzes the hidden memory of Voldemort about his

childhood that influences his character. Freud conveys

that the behavior of human is more influenced by

unconscious mind than conscious mind. Unconscious mind

is filled by someone’s painful memories and he tries to

keep and hide them. From that situation, it can

influence someone attitude and behavior or character

(Minderop, 2011:13). In Riddle’s case he has painful

memories about his father. His father was a muggle

(non-wizard) and left his mom when she was pregnant

Riddle. Knowing the truth about his father, he hides

and keeps it just for himself. But, the truth of his

family he could deny so he did nasty thing by murdering

his father and his father family. He killed them

67

Page 82: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

because he wanted to conceal the truth and kept his

secret about his family history that he was son of a

muggle. According to Krech (1974:479) hate has

relationship with angry and the trait that marks

felling of hatred is emerge the desire to kill or

destroy the source of hatred (Minderop, 2011:44).

Felling hatred makes Riddle murders his father and his

father’s family.

As long as Riddle kept his secret, he transformed

being a man who had anger and hatred about something

that has connection with muggle. Eagleton (1996:437)

mentions Freud says that human’s mind is influenced by

unconscious mind because human personality is developed

by human experience (Minderop, 2011:13). Riddle’s life

was always influenced by his past, so he tried to

abolish something about muggle. For example, when he

studied in Hogwarts there was incident happened when

Riddle opened the Chamber of Secret in Hogwarts and he

need victim to be sacrificed, so he chose the girl and

68

Page 83: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

killed her (HP6, 2005:17:362). The fact that the girl

who killed by Voldemort is a Half-Blood likes him. He

chose that girl besides he wanted to scarify her and

she reminded Riddle about his family status that he was

Half-Blood too. Riddle could not forget about his

status that he is Half-Blood, so he did it. According

to Freud that act of someone was usually influenced by

his unconscious mind that tries to show up himself and

what he does something without realize (Minderop,

2011:13). What Riddle has done is influenced by his

past about his blood status and he cannot forget it.

Riddle’s memory hides in his unconscious mind and

someday it can show up again.

Hiding and keeping his status, Riddle connects his

blood status with famous ancestor, Salazar Slytherin

who one of the persons builds Hogwarts by his ability.

Riddle can speak parseltongue (persons with the ability

to speak to snakes) like the ancestor Salazar Slytherin

and makes him excited about the fact “How soon Riddle

learned that the famous founder of the House could talk to snakes,

69

Page 84: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

(…..)The knowledge can only have excited him and increased his sense of

self-importance (HP6, 2005:17:360). Riddle made Slytherin

as his parents and rejected his biological parents by

changing his name from Tom Riddle into Lord Voldemort

because Tom is the name of his father and he really

hated his father, thus he did not to use that name

again. He considered himself as pure-blood and made

himself as hero figure that splited the pure-blood from

the half-blood and muggle. It proves that Riddle really

does not want his status and wants to forget it by

creating himself as pure-blood.

Besides, Harry Potter was archenemy of Voldemort

and he always tried to abolish Harry Potter. He knew

about Harry Potter from the prophecy that tells in the

future there is a boy who will beat Voldemort

“…..Voldemort singled you out as the person who would be most

dangerous to him — and in doing so, he made you the person who would

be most dangerous to him!” (HP6, 2005:23:509). Knowing it,

he became worry and made plan to abolish him. Another

reason why he must abolish Harry because he reminded

70

Page 85: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

Voldemort of his status, Harry is half-blood same with

him. Voldemort’s action was influenced by his thinking

that the boy who would beat him was the boy who had

same status with him. Voldemort felt threatened and

worried from someone who has similarity with him and

will make him lose. Riddle reckoned that Harry was an

obstacle for him. Following the concept of Freud, he

states that several conflicts and problems can obstruct

the progress of individuals to achieve goals and it is

one the source of anxiety (Minderop, 2011:28). Harry

reminded Voldemort about his weakness and forced him to

face the truth that that he was a half-blood whereas he

wanted to deny it. Therefore, his memory about his

family status reappeared and to forget it he must

destroy Harry Potter. According to Freud, he conveyed

that act of someone is usually influenced by his

unconscious mind that tries to reappears (Minderop,

2011:13). Here, Voldemort’s unconscious mind reappears

is about his blood status and his action is to destroy

Harry Potter.

71

Page 86: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

As Dumbledore revealed in his memory about

Voldemorts live, he was displayed as abject character,

seeking power and taking control to people. But, he

just a human who had weakness and the biggest weakness

that he had is death. He chose to be immortal so that

he could defeat the death as his weakness because the

death for him means there was no power or magic that

can bring the death back to life. The reason Voldemort

afraid of death because he looked from his past that

his mother gave up on her life and chose to die even

she was a witch. Not only that reason but the death of

his mother reminded him that magic could die even he

had powerful magic but he still could die. He felt so

desperate about his weakness that he could die too. His

perception about himself as an individual who had

weakness, motivated him to beat his weakness by doing

immoral thing to against the law of nature by creating

a horcrux to keep him immortal. As the analysis before

that young Voldemort asked to Prof. Slughron about how

72

Page 87: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

to create horcrux and he had desire to create it (HP6,

2005:23:498).

By choosing to engage in a several murders,

Voldemort became cruel and abject figure. But he did

not care because he wanted to be immortal even though

he had to do inhuman action. His action made him

separate himself from society because there will be

nobody who can help him from his problem. Here,

Voldemort still influenced by his past about his mother

left him and chose to die and he changed himself being

obsession to be immortal and he never trusted people to

help him. It is explained by Minderop added that Freud

conveys to find out the psyche problem occurs, and he

believes that psyche problem deals with past and

childhood experience (2011:10). Psyche problem that is

faced by Voldemort is he obsesses to be immortal even

though he knows that there is nobody who cannot live

forever but he still forces himself to make himself

immortal. Voldemort does anything to save himself for

the death even though he must feel the pain when he

73

Page 88: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

creates horcrux. He has to divide his soul after killing

people. To support his idea he thought to make one

horcrux which is not enough so he decided to make seven

horcruxes that means he had to kill seven people. It is

an abject idea that he had but he still did it because

it made him survive event though there was someone who

defeated him when he lost or his body decayed his soul

in safety.

Following the explanation above it, describes that

the characterization of Voldemort is affected by his

unconscious mind. The unconscious mind itself is the

place of the memory, traumatic events, and emotional

events of someone. According to Minderop that

unconscious mind is filled by someone’s painful

memories and he tries to keep and hide them (Minderop,

2011:13). In Voldemort’s case he conceals his secret

memory in it. On the other hand, unconscious mind is

the place of the id, as Freud says that the id is

located at unconscious mind. The id itself is the part

74

Page 89: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

of human personality that has characteristics like

boss, it has to honor, masterful, and the desire of the

id must be fulfilled. As Freud mentions the way of Id’s

works has relation with the principle of pleasure, it

means it always seek the pleasure and avoids feeling

discomfort (Minderop, 2011 21). Looking at Voldemort’s

case about his past that he never got what he needs in

his past, so he has ambition to satisfy himself by

fulfilling his needs, such as he wants to be the one

who has power, immortal, and he has desire to be number

one from the others. What Voldemort needs in line with

the principle of the id.

Moreover, the id as structure of human

personality, there is ego is a structure of it too. The

ego is like the Prime Minister who has duty to fulfill

what the Id needs. But, the ego works by the way

satisfy the id by considering there is no trouble when

the ego tries to fulfill what the id needs (Minderop,

2011:22). Beside, that the superego is the third system

75

Page 90: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

of human psyche, it is the moral system. Becaus it is a

moral system, the superego has role as it takes control

the authority of moral in personality. It is as judge

to judgment whether the action taken is right or wrong

(Fudyartanta, 2012:141).

In the case of Voldemort, the ego cannot fulfill

the pleasure principle of the id because superego

agganist the desire of id. It means what Voldemort

needs are failed to be fulfilled. The result of that

problem makes Voldemort feeling anxiety and

uncomfortable always appear. In order to eliminate

feeling anxiety and uncomfortable, he did the actions

to satisfy his desire. For instance, he killed his

father because he knew that his father left his mother

and the truth that his father was a muggle. He was

angry with his father and not comfort about his father

status because he had desire to be the wizard who had

pure-blood. He was worry if there was wizard knew about

the fact of his statuse especially the wizards who

76

Page 91: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

followed him as the part of Death Eater. To satisfy his

desire, he connected his status with the famous

ancestor, Salazar Slytherin because he had same ability

with him (can speak with sneak) and made himself as

descent of him. The other examples showed the action of

Voldemort that is influenced by id are he killed

Hepzibah Smith, tried to ablish Harry Potter, and

created horcruxes. Therefore, the id likely influences

the personality of Voldemort and every action that he

takes, it causes he grows up to be a scary man and

horrible person and he also does a lot of vile actions

to satisfy his desire and to avoid feeling of anxiety

and uncomfortable.

CHAPTER V

CONCLUSION

Concerning with the issue analyzed in the previous

chapter, the writer focuses analyzing the

characterization based on psychoanalysis approach. The

object of the research that analyzed by the writer is

Lord Voldemort. He is one of the character in the novel

Harry Potter and the Half Blood-Prince by J.K Rowling

and his real name is Tom Riddle, it is given by his

mother before her death. The issue is chosen by the

writer in this novel is the influence of Voldemort

character toward his past. Hence, the writer uses

theory of psychoanalysis by Freud to analyze the issue.

After the writer analyzed this issue, there are several

conclusions that found by the writer. First, Voldemort

in novel Harry Potter and the Half Blood-Prince is

categorized as antagonist character. He is categorized

78

Page 93: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

as antagonist character because he has nasty action and

weird attitude. For instance, when he was a boy he

killed Billy’s rabbit after he argued with him and he

stole his stuffs’ friend in orphanage. Another example

is when he studied in Hogwarts he did offense by

killing one of students in Hogwarts.

Beside that, Voldemort as antagonist character, he

is also categorized as static character. The reason

considers Voldemort as static character because at the

beginning until the end, he is consistence to do nasty

action. When he was a boy there are several offenses

were done by him, like killed Billy’s rabbit, made his

friends in orphanage afraid, and stole the stuffs of

his friends. The nasty action continues when he studied

in Hogwarts. He did a lot of offense in there but

difficult to catch him when he did offense. He did

nasty action over and over again until he transform as

dark wizard.

79

Page 94: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

Second, knowing the development of character of

Voldemort, the writer analyzed the characterization of

Voldemort by dividing the life of him into four time:

childhood, adolscence, Tom Riddle after Hogwarts, and

Tom Riddle transforms being Lord Voldemort. Following

that analysis, Voldemort has odd attitude and every

action that he has done always has bad impact for

people. Voldemort also has a consistency to do the bad

and nasty things. Such as, when he graduates from

Hogwarts, he worked in Borgin and Burkes as an

intermediary to persuade the people to sell their

stuffs in there. He has mission to go to Hepzibah

Smith’s house to persuade her for selling her stuff,

but an incident happened in there. Riddle killed

Hepzibah Smith after she showed her family treasure and

a heavy golden locket that had Slytherin’s mark. Then,

he took the treasures of her. But, Riddle killed her by

blaming the house fairy of Hepzibah. He made plan to

show that Hepzibah’s house fairy is the murderer.

80

Page 95: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

Third, the writer analyzed the characterization of

Voldemort based on psychoanalysis approach. The

characterization of Voldemort is affected by his

unconscious mind. In Voldemort’s case he conceals his

secret memory in it. Unconscious mind is the place of

the id. Looking at Voldemort’s case about his past that

he never gets what he needs in his past so he has

ambition to satisfy himself by fulfilling his needs,

such as he wanted to be the one who had power,

immortal, and he has desire to be number one from the

others. What Voldemort needed in line with the

principle of the id.

Besides, the id is most influence the personality

of Voldemort and every action that he did, it caused he

grew up to be a scary and horrible person and he also

did a lot of vile actions to satisfy his desire and to

avoid feeling anxiety and uncomfortable. For instance,

he killed his father because he knew that his father

left his mother and the truth that his father was a

81

Page 96: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

muggle. He was angry with his father and not comfort

about his father status because he had desire to be the

wizard who has pure-blood. He was worry if there is

wizard know about the fact of his statuse especially

the wizards who follow him as the part of Death Eater.

To satisfy his desire he connected his status with the

famous ancestor, Salazar Slytherin because he had same

ability with him (can speak with sneak) and made

himself as descent of him. The other examples shows the

action of Voldemort that influenced by id are he killed

Hepzibah Smith, tried to ablish Harry Potter, and

created horcruxes.

APPENDIX

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

by

J.K Rowling

(2005)

Harry potter and the Half-Blood prince

is the sixth novel of Harry Potter

series by J.K Rowling. The story tells

the life of Harry Potter in sixth year

at Hogwarts. In this year a lot of

incidents happens. It is started when

the Ministry of Magic (Cornelius Fudge) visited the

Muggle Prime Minister to give information what the

incident happens in wizard world. Fudge explained that

a lot of incidents happened in wizard world that got

bad impact in muggle world, such as the collapse of the

Brockdale Bridge, a supposed hurricane in the West

Country, the deaths of Amelia Bones and Emmeline

Vance and the insanity of Junior Minister Herbert

Chorley which have all been caused by Lord Voldemort,

his followers the Death Eaters and their Giant allies.

It means that the Wizarding War has begun. Fudge also

revealed that he has been changed and replaced by Rufus

Scrimgeour as Minister of Magic and he would meet the

Prime Minister and discusses security arrangements with

him.

The second chapter told Narcissa Malfoy and

Bellatrix Lestrange, they visited Snape’s house at

Spinner’s End a poverty-stricken neighborhood in a

northern mill town. Narcissa wanted Snape to help by

giving proctection for her son Draco Malfoy who has

been join Death Eater and has been sent to a mission by

Lord Voldemort. Then, she explained that Draco would

certain to fail in the mission was given for him.

Narcissa and Snape believed that Lord Voldemort gave

this mission for Draco to punish Draco’s father because

he failed to do the mission to retrieve the prophecy at

the Department of Mysteries was given by him. Bellatrix

87

Page 102: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

gave an idea to make unbreakable vow for Snape so he

would keep his promise to protect and help Draco in

mission.

In the chapter 3, Albus Dumbledore sent Harry

letter that tonight he would visit the Dursley’s house

at Privet Drive number 4 which the house where Harry

lives and asked him to follow his Journey, and he also

would take Harry to The Burrow (the house of Weasley

family). During his visiting, Dumbledore told the

Sirius Black’s will that Harry inherits his family’s

wealth he Black family house at 12 Grimmauld

Place which Harry lets as the Order of the Phoenix’s

place, and the House-elf Kreacher. The, Dumbledore also

told Dursley’s family to let Harry back to their home

for the last time. Chapter 4, Albus Dumbledore brought

Harry to visit his old friend. Dunbledore’s aim visited

his old friend prof. Horace Slughron to teach again at

Hogwarts but, he refused it. Then Harry said to him

that no teachers have died since Dumbledore became

88

Headmaster, except Professor Quirrell, who was working

for Voldemort. In short, Prof. Horace accepted the

Dumbledore’s request and Harry became one of his

favorite students, therefore he put Harry in his club

Slug club.

Another chapter, told about Dumbledore who gave

Harry course to visit his memory that told about the

secret life of Voldemort. In the chapter 10 is the

first memory of Dumbledore that shown the story of

Voldemort’s family. He has grandfather who has name

Marvolo Gaunt and his uncle is Morfin, and Marvolo’s

daughter is Merope. It told the action was done by

Morfin, he attacked muggle thus the Magical Law

Enforcement Patrol Bob Ogden visited their house to

give punishment for him. When he visited them he saw

Marvolo tried to attack his daughter because she in

love with a muggle Tom Riddle. After viewing

Dumbledore’s memory, Dumbledore explained Harry about

Voldemort’s family that both Marvolo and Morfin were

89

Page 104: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

sentenced to six months and three years in Azkaban the

jail for the wizard and He also reveals that Merope

Gaunt was Voldemort's mother and Riddle was his father,

thus making Marvolo Voldemort's as grandfather and

Morfin as his uncle. While her father and brother in

jail, Merope felt free and she married with the man who

she loves Tom Riddle. Here, Dumbledore and Harry made

speculation that Merope gave Tom Love Potion and then

they married. After long they lived together, Merope

stopped giving Tom it and Tom left her when she was

pregnant because he did not feeling with her.

In second Harry’s lesson, Dumbledore brought Harry

in his memory when he met the young Voldemort. In the

previous memory Tom left Merope when she was pregnant

and when the day she born the baby she went to the

orphanage. After she born the baby, she gave his son

name Tom Marvolo Riddle, the boy who would become Lord

Voldemort. Living in orphanage made him grow up became

the odd boy and the naughty boy. He likes to disturb

90

Page 105: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

his friends, give terror so they afraid of him. The

worst thing that Riddle did is he killed Billy’s

rabbit. Since he was a boy, Tom Riddle used his powers

to make people suffer and give punishment to people who

he did not like.

Several times Harry Visited Dumbledore’s memory,

he knew who the real Voldemort is. Voldemort has bad

behavior and he always did nasty action. When he

studied in Hogwarts he did always offense but he was

very difficult to catch him when he did it. He killed a

girl who studied in Hogwarts because he need victim to

be sacrificed to open the chamber of the secret. He

also has interest in dark magic, it is proved when he

asked prof. Slughron the way to make horcrux, prof.

Slughron said that to make it you have to kill someone

first. Riddle has curiosity about his family, so when

the school holiday he decided to seek his family. He

visited his Grandfather’s house, in there he knew the

truth that his mother married with muggle and then his

91

Page 106: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

father left his mother when she was pregnant. Knowing

that Riddle angry and he made plan to kill his father.

While he did his plan, he killed his father and his

father’s family by blaming his uncle. Before, he killed

them he uses the spell for his uncle and stole his wand

so the Minster Law of Magic reckon the murder of

Riddle’s family is Morfin. Another offense he did was

he killed Hepzibah Smith a client in Borgin and Burkes

where the place he worked. He killed Hepzibah after she

showed him her treasure Slytherin’s Locket and

Hupelpuff’s thropy. Here, can be looked that Riddle

like to do humiliation and some terrible things. After

this incident he hide for very long time and when he

back he changed his name Lord Voldemort and he has

desire to control the world of wizard.

In another chapter reveals the Draco’s mission to

kill Dumbledore and give the opportunity for The Death

Eaters to enter at Hogwarts and attack the people who

live in Hogwarts the teachers and students. The day

92

Page 107: CHARACTERIZATION OF LORD VOLDEMORT in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K Rowling SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS

when Draco run his mission, Dumbledore and Harry was

doing their journey to find the horcrux that belong to

Voldemort. After they did their journey they went to

Hogwarts and they knew that Death Eaters already came

in into Hogwarts. The teachers and all the students

battle with Death Eaters and not a few for them were

injured. But. The saddest thing happened in Lighting-

Struck Tower, when Draco tried to kill Dumbledore,

Snape came and he killed Dumbledore. Harry who is the

only person watched this incident, he felt very shock

and unbelievable that Dumbledore was killed by Snape

his teacher at Hogwarts. Harry was angry and chase

Snape to vengeance because he killed his beloved

professor. Because of the death of Dumbledore all

teachers and students grieve, not only them but all the

wizard missed a figure of Dumbledore who is the great

wizard. Several days after the death of Dumbledore,

Harry has to continue Dumbledore’s mission to abolish

Voldemort’s horcrux. Together with His friends Hermione

and Ron, they did long journey to seek the Voldemort’s

horcrux.
