Science Fiction

Protagonist• Nova Card: (Nova means new

and Card is for Orson Scott Card, the writer of Ender’s Game.)

• 16 year old cadet at Combat Academy, being trained to join the army.

• Has always wanted to be a shuttle pilot ever since the war between Earth and another galaxy broke out but she is unable to follow orders.

Antagonist• Cyrus Shusterman (Cyrus means

far sighted and Shusterman for Neal Shusterman, the author of Everlost.)

• 19 year old trainer at Combat Academy, who was grounded after crashing his shuttle and mangling his legs, he is now a paraplegic.

• Makes life very hard for Nova because she has so much of what he wanted from life and can now never have.

Romance

Protagonist• Ava Bronte (Ava means

desired, and Bronte after Charlotte Bronte the writer of Jane Eyre.)

• Young, naïve woman in love with the dashing Alan (Alan means handsome)

• Ava is not supposed to love Alan because he was falsely accused of a robbery and Ava’s father is a police officer.

Antagonist • Iri Austen (Iri means jealousy,

and Jane Austen the author of Pride and Prejudice.)

• Iri is Ava’s discontent stepmother who has suffered nothing but abuse from Ava’s father, who is a closet drunk. Unhappy that Ava has found love when she has not, Iri tries to separate the two.

Detective/Mystery

Protagonist • Earnest Brown (Earnest means

truth, and Brown for Dan Brown, the writer of the Da Vinci Code)

• Someone has been maliciously breaking and entering homes all over the city although nothing appears to be missing, in fact messages meant for Detective Earnest are being left behind, taunting him with knowledge of his daughter’s disappearance.

Antagonist• Kerri Grafton (Kerri means

dark and mysterious and Grafton after Sue Grafton, the writer of T is for Trespass)

• Earnest’s new partner who is unreliable in the extreme. A bad party girl who has made it clear she does not trust or like Earnest one iota and plans to make his life difficult.

Crime

Protagonist• Hunter Cornwell (Hunter means to

hunt, Patricia Cornwell wrote Scarpetta)

• A string of gory murders has struck a sleepy little town, vicious garroting and drowning has befallen each victim. Hunter has a personal connection to this case, his girlfriend was the first victim. Hunter was always a good cop, but never has so much been on the line, he is willing to bend some rules.

Antagonist • Malory Woods (Malory means

bad luck and Woods for Stuart Woods who wrote Santa Fe Dead)

• This woman seems to have a personal connection to every victim, she was Hunter’s girlfriend’s best friend, although she never liked Hunter. Malory has a bad habit of showing up at each crime scene by accident and destroying evidence in the process.

Comedy

Protagonist• Gale McLean (Gale is from a

medieval surname that meant ‘jovial’ and McLean for Stuart McLean who wrote the Vinyl Café)

• Gale is a middle aged man who has always wanted to quit his dead end job in his cubicle but never had incentive until he discovered he has terminal cancer. Now, full of excitement at finally living his life, Gale is out to have one last adventure before he starts treatment.

Antagonist• Liliha Martin (Liliha Hawaiian,

means angry disregard and Martin for Steve Martin who wrote Born Standing Up: A Comic’s Life )

• Liliha is Gale’s newly hired caregiver who does not think any of Gale’s misadventures are entertaining at all and tries to curtail Gale’s fun. Unhappy in new situations, Liliha drags her feet every step of the way.

Fantasy

Protagonist • Andrea Collins (Andrea means

courageous and Collins for Suzan Collins who wrote Hunger Games)

• Andrea is studying late, late at night for a history final the next day. Andrea never seems to get anything done on time, this studying is no different. At the stroke of midnight, the world stops. A new world takes place around Andrea’s frozen reality. This new world is ruled by the cruel Queen Daria.

Antagonist• Daria Colfer ( Daria means to

posses and Colfer for Eoin Colfer who wrote Artemis Fowl)

• Daria has never been denied anything in her life, all the riches, entertainment she has ever wanted were granted to her. She has always been told how beautiful and witty she is. This new Andrea does not mesh with her lifestyle, she must be taught some respect.

Tragedy

Protagonist• Tristan Brashares (Tristan means

sad and Brashares for Ann Brashares who wrote The Last Summer of You and Me.)

• Tristan and Ophelia had a secret love affair. Tristan, who is a prince, is betrothed to a princess worthy of his status but it is Ophelia that he truly loves and intends to marry. Tristan just isn’t sure how to let the other girl down, so he decides to secretly elope with Ophelia.

Antagonist• Ophelia Sebold (Ophelia means

help and Sebold for Alice Sebold who wrote The Lovely Bones)

• Ophelia has never been noticed before, she is an orphan and no one has ever loved her. Ophelia, unaware that Tristan does feel as she does, goes mad with jealousy the night before Tristan’s wedding. In desperation, she stabs Tristan to death before killing herself.

Historical Fiction

Protagonist• Elizabeth Smith ( Elizabeth means

consecrated by god and Smith for Anne Easter Smith who wrote Daughter of York.)

• Elizabeth is Mary’s younger half sister, they share the same father. Elizabeth is smart and pretty, but because her mother broke her father’s heart she is sent away. Set in Renaissance England, the sisters love each other in the beginning, but political and religious strife slowly pulls them apart. Elizabeth is runs away from her oppressive sister.

Antagonist • Mary Gregory (Mary means bitter;

named after Phillipa Gregory, who wrote The Queen’s Fool)

• As the older sister, Mary believes she has to spare Elizabeth from all the rumors about her mother, who was regarded as an immoral woman, and as a result smothers her; driving her away forever. Mary is quick witted, but her sister overshadows her in every other aspect, just as Elizabeth’s mother had overshadowed Mary’s.

Adventure

Protagonist • Isabella Rowling (Named after

Isabella of Castile (Queen of Spain) who sponsored Christopher Columbus and J. K. Rowling who wrote Harry Potter.)

• Isabella is 12 years old and her imagination runs away with her. While playing in the forest behind her grandparents house she discovers a pixie named Victor. Isabella finds Victor strange and, as an inquisitive little thing, she agrees to follow him.

Antagonist • Victor Picoult (Victor means

winner or conqueror and Picoult for Jodi Picoult who wrote Second Glance)

• Pixies are known for stealing human children. Victor is fond of Isabella, but it is in his nature to kidnap and keep Isabella in the Realm of Faerie forever. However, Victor is more human than he thought.

Horror

Protagonist • Louise King (Louise means fights

with honor and King for Stephan King who wrote Misery)

• Louise had it all, the family, the job, the loving husband. That is until Irene Shelley moved in next door. Now Irene has a hold on Louise’s family, they seem drawn to Irene and away from Louise. There is something very wrong with this new neighbor and Louise must set it right.

Antagonist• Irene Shelley (after Irene of

the Byzantine Empire who killed her son to rule the empire alone and Mary Shelley, the author of Frankenstein)

• Irene has stolen Louise’s husband, but she is not satisfied, she wants everything Louise owns and her life.
