He presented some great information about MOAA. And he was happy to hear about our new satellite organization in Pinal County. I was pleased to see so many new faces at our meeting. Our membership is continuing to grow. One of my primary goals is to increase our MOAA membership. So because of my new Agent Orange funding from the VA that I am now receiving for my 100% disability, I have decided to fund a general golf sponsorship in the name of “MOAA” at the Operation Welcome Home AZ Golf Tournament to be held in the fall. The organization is planning on building an 80% replica of the Vietnam Wall in Gilbert, AZ. Their golf tournament on November 5, 2016 at the Biltmore Golf Course, will help fund the construction of this Veterans Welcome Home AZ Park. I have been involved with that organization for nearly two years. I want to see both groups flourish, MOAA and OWHAZ. My daughters agreed that I could use their future inheritance to promote MOAA and OWHAZ. So I asked Col. Wright to present Lisa Rigler, President of OWHAZ and Roger Pollard, Vice President of OWHAZ my $9,500.00 check to cover that sponsorship in the name of MOAA. By the way Capt. Roger Pollard is one of our newest Superstition Mountain Chapter members. This sponsorship will allow MOAA to have 16 golfers. We will be selecting golfers from all 9 chapters in Arizona. On Sunday April 24 th , Capt. George Meegan USMC (ret) presented our SMC wreath at the Vietnam Veterans Commemorate Vietnam Remembrance Day at the Wesley Bolin Plaza by the State Capitol. We have presented our wreath at this activity for many years. Don’t forget, we will also be presenting our wreath at the National Cemetery on Memorial Day. As of Monday April 25th, Ann Schminke is still in the Chandler Regional Medical Center. She has been in the hospital for over two weeks. It appears that she is bleeding from the colon. Still unknown. She asked me to thank all of you who have said a prayer and wished her a speedy recovery. Hopefully she will be home soon.
I would like to thank everyone who attended our last dinner meeting on April 17th. Col Barry Wright, the MOAA Council & Chapters Director, was our guest speaker. I hope to see many of you at our next meeting on May 15th. Greg Moore has put together an interesting program, a nonprofit organization that takes in unwanted dogs and trains them to be Therapy Dogs for Veterans. How fantastic is that!
We will also have our annual ‘Moment of Remembrance’ as we pause for a moment and remember all of our MOAA brothers and sisters that have passed.

AUXILIARY NEWS: from Ann Schminke
We have been busy stuffing pillows. So far we have stuffed 59 pillows that will be donated to the Phoenix Veterans Hospital. I have spoken with Shirley Phillips and she was glad to hear of our progress. The ladies have enjoyed getting to know each other. There has been much laughter and bonding amongst the stuffers. Please feel free to join us at our stuffing bee and enjoy the companionship of others. Our next luncheon is on May 13th. Come at 10:30 to stuff pillows or 11:30 for lunch. We will meet through the summer! Standing in for Ann – Judy Bushko
On the Left – Col Barry Wright presented Ed Mangan with a National MOAA Coin. On the Right - Col. Barry Wright presented Lisa Rigler, President of OWHAZ and Roger Pollard, Vice President of OWHAZ, a check from Ed Mangan for $9,500.00 for sponsorship in their November 5th Operation Welcome Home AZ Golf Tournament. The sponsorship, made in MOAA’s name, will allow 16 MOAA members to participate in the tournament.

Our Superstition Mountain Chapter is going to the dogs. Rather, better stated, the dogs are coming to SMC. At our May dinner, we will be joined by representatives from, "Soldiers
Best Friend", a Peoria based nonprofit organization. This group, which does work statewide, takes shelter/rescue dogs and trains them to be companion dogs for veterans who may be suffering from PTSD or have a physical disability. The organization is a 501(c) 3 and is funded by donations and small grants. Sounds like a worthwhile group with a noble mission.

The April dinner was very successful as we gained new members. May is the last of the dinner meetings until September. The menu is Filet of Beef, Chicken Marsala or
Bourbon Shrimp. As always, your attendance and reservations are most appreciated. We can only hope the D'Backs are as successful as our chapter has been and will continue to do so.
We will begin our summer luncheons in June, meeting for social at 12:00 noon, with lunch served at 1:00pm. Menu choices will be Cheeseburger, Chicken Salad Croissant, Ruben Sandwich or Chef's Salad. Cost is $20 and reservations are due the Thursday before the lunch.
Email [email protected], call 480-897-8835, or mail your reservation to George Meegan, 1981 E. Dava Dr, Tempe AZ 85283.

George Meegan or Cassie Prinke will be available for matters of check writing if I'm out of town. If you still have dues that are unpaid, you can send them to my address at: 20444 N 22nd St, Phoenix, AZ 85024. Thank you all for your support.

The Chapter meets the last Saturday of each month at the Robson Ranch in Eloy, AZ. Take Jimmie Kerr Rd, exit 198 off of I-10. This month’s luncheon meeting will be on May 28th at noon. Last month we had almost 20 members attend. It was a very nice afternoon. Everyone is welcome to attend.
A Moment of Remembrance Join us at our May Dinner as we take a few moments to remember our friends who have passed. A candle will be lit and a moment of silence observed.
Everyone needs to keep reading the Legislative Updates I send out. At the end are often prompts to go on line and send in your views.

We have almost completed all of our presentations to the 20 JROTC high schools and ASU ROTC units we support. I appreciate all of you who stepped up and made the presentations.
I realize it takes time away from your other endeavors to do this, but the cadets are definitely worth the effort. I would also like to thank everyone who donated to our JROTC fund this year. It’s not easy to come up with almost $3,000.00 for this program, but you did it!
Below is a thank you note from one of the JROTC units we sponsor.
Good Morning, Thank you for making the Higley AFJROTC Annual Awards Ceremony a success! Without you and your leadership, none of this would have been possible. I know each of you is very busy and for you to take time out of your day and to spend them with our Cadets means a lot to me and the AFJROTC program. Thank you again and may each of you have a great remainder to your week!

For Your Information
It's official; DD-214s are NOW Online. The National Personnel Records Center (NPRC) has provided the following website for veterans to gain access to their DD-214s online: http://vetrecs.archives.gov/ or try http://www.archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records/
This may be particularly helpful when a veteran needs a copy of his DD-214 for employment purposes. NPRC is working to make it easier for veterans with computers and Internet access to obtain copies of documents from their military files. Military veterans and the next of kin of deceased former military members may now use a new online military personnel records system to request documents. Other individuals with a need for documents must still complete the Standard Form 180, which can be downloaded from the online web site. Because the requester will be asked to supply all information essential for NPRC to process the request, delays that normally occur when NPRC has to ask veterans for additional information will be minimized. The new web-based application was designed to provide better service on these requests by eliminating the records centers mail room and processing time. Please pass this information on to former military personnel you may know and their dependents
Board meetings
The board meets at Dobson’s Restaurant in Mesa on the 2nd Monday of each month at 9am. As always, members are cordially invited to attend these meetings. Upcoming meeting: May 9th, no meetings in
June, July and August.
Auxiliary Spouses Luncheon Meetings
The Auxiliary meets on the 2nd Friday of each month at 11:30am. May’s meeting is on the 13th at Dobson’s Restaurant in Mesa. We will be making Heart Pillows for veterans in our hospitals, before lunch. If you would like to help, arrive at 10:30am. Call or email Ann Schminke if you have questions.
In 1868, Ann Jarvis, mother of Anna Jarvis, created a committee to establish a "Mother's Friendship Day", the purpose of which was "to reunite families that had been divided during the Civil War." Jarvis – who had previously organized "Mother's Day Work Clubs" to improve sanitation and health for both Union and Confederate encampments undergoing a typhoid outbreak – wanted to expand this into an annual memorial for mothers, but she died in 1905 before the celebration became popular. Her daughter would continue her mother's efforts.
In its present form, Mother's Day was established by Anna Jarvis with the help of Philadelphia merchant John Wanamaker following the death of her mother, Ann Jarvis, on May 9, 1905.
Jarvis then campaigned to establish Mother's Day first as a U.S. national holiday and then later as an international holiday. The holiday was declared officially by the state of West Virginia in 1910, and the rest of the states followed quickly.
On May 10, 1913, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution calling on all federal government officials (from the president down) to wear a white carnation the following day in observance of Mother's Day. On May 8, 1914, the U.S. Congress passed a law designating the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day and requesting a proclamation. The next day, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation declaring the first national Mother's Day as a day for American citizens to show the flag in honor of those mothers whose sons had died in war. In 1934, U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt approved a stamp commemorating the holiday.
Traditions on Mother's Day include churchgoing, the distribution of carnations, and family dinners. Mother’s Day is the third largest holiday in the US for sending cards. According to the greeting card industry, it is estimated that more than 50 percent of American households send greeting cards on this holiday. The holiday has been heavily commercialized by advertisers and retailers, and has been criticized by some as a Hallmark Holiday.
