COVER STORY

If there is no darkness around no one will notice how important the lights are. Be it indoor, outdoor or architecture, a properly distributed lighting works as the essential salt to any environment. Without it, even the most beautifully designed décor will be dull of soul.

Lighting Tricks

Carefully considered bulbs and fixtures create an inviting environment that encourages people to linger. One of the biggest missteps is overly bright lighting. Following are the key points trending now in the design industry that helps make lighting more sensible.

Page 5: Chapter Name - furniture-magazine.us€¦ · New York, N.Y. 10001 USA Ph : +1 917 677 7753 editor@furniture-magazine.com Chitralekha Banerjee Since time immemorial, lights have been

Adding a dimmer

Knowing the bulbs

Instead of lighting the whole room, incorporate multiple points of light. The best-lit rooms have layers of light that blend well together. Sometimes, the right lampshade can make all the difference.

For multipurpose rooms, dimmers are essential. Not only they allow for flexibility depending on the time of day, event, or mood, they're also great energy savers and they increase the bulb lives.

Compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) are a great option. Screw-in LEDs have a long life, but can be pricey.

Considering the function of the room

The functionality of the room is something to watch for. Lighting should be in accordance with the functionality of the room and the mood of the dwellers.

To look at the broader aspect of the industry, lighting and light decors are often related to European decorum. The art deco style of modern lighting reaches a niche with the help of the elegance and style of the European craft whereas American designers are more concentrated on the chic and contemporary. This year Milan has showcased some of the best possible lighting options that include the following from all the continents.

ENLIGHTENED MILAN

Lee Broom showcased Optical lighting collection with "surreal roadshow" in Milan. Broom recreated part of an Italian palazzo inside a delivery van for a travelling installation to showcase his latest 90s-inspired lighting collection. He finished it with Corinthian columns and stuccoed details.

Page 7: Chapter Name - furniture-magazine.us€¦ · New York, N.Y. 10001 USA Ph : +1 917 677 7753 editor@furniture-magazine.com Chitralekha Banerjee Since time immemorial, lights have been

Broom described the project as a "surreal roadshow". "While deciding where I should exhibit I thought 'what about everywhere?'" he said. "My designs are often surreal and the idea behind the installation is to see something unexpected – a captivating optical illusion."

From the outside, the van appeared as it normally does with the installation revealed when the back doors were opened. An illuminated floor made the effect more dramatic.

Broom's new Optical lighting collection of floor lamps and pendants were displayed inside. The globe-shaped lights featured a pattern of black stripes around one end.

The area where the lamp meets its support is a circle of solid black, while the stripes are cut into sections to create optical effects. Broom said the pattern was inspired by designs from the 1990s.

"It's really inspired by the period in which I grew up in," he said. "I guess my first real foray into interiors was decorating my own bedroom in the early 90s and Optical really reflects the monochrome graphics and mood of that era."

The floor lamps sit on short, round black pedestals or thin black stems with a round base for stability.

Both installations featured all-grey props and scenery, in the same shade that Broom uses for his branding.

Other designers working on installations for this year's Milan Design Week included Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto, who created a "forest of light" for fashion brand COS.

The Perch Light family by London-based UmutYamac included six lamps, which feature illuminated birds that looked like they have been folded from paper. The avian figures sit on brass stands, which form table, floor, wall and pendant lights.

Over at Torre Velasca, Audi showed how advances in lighting technology could make cars both safer and more beautiful, with playful OLED tail lights and laser headlights that can project zebra crossings onto the road to help pedestrians and selectively block full beam to avoid dazzling oncoming vehicles with no loss of illumination.

ENLIGHTENED AMERICA

"We want to make lights that appeal to the American market," says Jason Miller, the Brooklyn-based designer who founded Roll & Hill, a contemporary lighting company that recently launched its second collection. "Most lighting design today is European," Miller explains, "and shares a minimalist aesthetic that's less appealing to Americans, who prefer something more substantial. A perfect, glowing white orb is not really what people want here."

For years Miller had observed young designers in and around New York having success with lighting, and he sought to give them the infrastructure to be even more productive by putting a real manufacturer behind them. His cherry-picked group—Lindsey Adams Adelman, Paul Loebach, and the trio Rich Brilliant Willing—made a splash at last year's International

Contemporary Furniture Fair. Along with newcomers Jonah Takagi and Jonas Damon, the designers debuted their latest works at this year's Salone del Mobile in Milan.

Miller's own work for the 2011 collection references supergraphics, the bold abstract murals painted on buildings during the 1960s and '70s.

For example, Endless is a modular system of connecting half-cylinders that hangs from a ceiling or extends along a wall. "It can outline an entire space or create a new one," he says.

His Odds & Ends series of sconces is comprised of three different shapes that can be combined in multiple configurations.

Meanwhile, Adelman's Agnes chandelier was inspired by a 19th-century prostitute's candelabra, which could be set up quickly for instant ambience. And Takagi's Bluff City pendants are a decorative take on industrial chic.

We had the privilege to interact more regarding light and the lighting industry with the Danish firm VITA. VITA Copenhagen is a place where beautiful Danish lighting design meets the Scandinavian feel, high-quality materials and a genuine care for the environment.

COVER STORY

VITA – the outstanding inventor of lights that leaves a mesmerized environment shapes their lighting product in a completely different way.

Chic, graceful silhouette, perfect to make a great ambience, cozy, stylish, innovative materials – these are the terms in VITA believes and delivers. We bring to you a candid conversation with Andra Gavrilescu, the Content Manager of VITA Lighting; discover the untold story of VITA.

FAE: What are the things that you keep in mind before designing any VITA product?

AG: Clearly the Nordic design language is always the DNA of what we want to achieve within communicating simple and lasting lighting designs. But we also need to focus on keeping costs low by making the products compact-packable and simple in construction, yet creating a beautiful light and ambience feel to any VITA copenhagen product out there.

FAE: How did the idea of the metallic VITA Clava and Clava Dine came to you?

AG: Quite often smaller lamps hanging in the corner create a rather dull or in-direct “shading” light. By making small holes around the curvy vertical sides, the light came to life and small dots of light started dancing around the center of the light source. Making the Clava Dine just made the whole dining experience and atmosphere so much more exclusive and enticing. We love our dancing dots!

FAE: Could you share some thoughts about VITA’s stunning five-year anniversary edition ‘Silvia Gold’?

AG: Silvia was our first number-one hit and we felt it was only natural to make a Gold version for the many fans of the Silvia family, especially now that the golden color is such a popular successor to the copper one.

FAE: There are other luxurious lighting brands that are gaining popularity in the European market. How the market of VITA in Europe is faring as of now?

AG: We have a huge growth and VITA copenhagen was the second largest growing company in Denmark in 2015, so we are doing fairly well in the lighting business as well. There is a growing need for affordable good Scandinavian lighting design – not just in Europe – and VITA copenhagen will always have a say in this market.

FAE: Danish designs in new light! Can you tell us about the reflection of Danish design in your products?

AG: Keeping it simple – not just for communicating lasting design, but also for keeping costs down for the benefit of the consumers and the environment. It works and it feels good. Avoid the mixed design signals and stay true to your heritage.

FAE: What do you consider to be the best project of VITA copenhagen?

AG: Light as a feather – of course the Eos feather lamp. It is selling all over the world, in more than 40 countries. It provides all of the above mentioned key-points of the VITA copenhagen design, but more importantly, with its light, it provides the “hygge” – the Danish word for cosiness, with the warm and relaxing feeling we all crave now and then. FAE: Is VITA copenhagen concentrating on emerging markets in Asia and Middle East as well?

AG: Yes and no – we focus on Europe, North

America and Asia in that order. South America and Middle East occupy the third position, keeping in mind that the need for Nordic lights decreases as we geographically move further and further southwards.

FAE: What are the recent projects you are working on? What can we look forward to iSaloni 2017, if you are exhibiting there?

AG: VITA copenhagen will be moving into furniture, and we will be participating with our new furniture line in Milan 2017 without forgetting the lighting DNA deriving from our heritage.

Coming to South East Asia, The Malaysian International Furniture Fair (MIFF) crowned a new design talent in 27-year-old Lim Bo Qiang with his entry Muk Sofa impressing an international jury for the RM10,000 top prize in the 2016 MIFF Furniture Design Competition (FDC).

Karen Goi, MIFF General Manager remarked, “The outcome and quality of entries received for FDC this year is very satisfying and rewarding for our efforts over the past seven years to nurture young talent. The market exposure provided by MIFF and the vast experience of international judges are casting a positive change in the mindsets of aspiring designers, this is showing up very well in FDC.”

Rebung Shelves by industrial design student, Izyan Syamimi Zainol of Melaka came in second while third place went to Cheng Ho Chair by young architect Kaylynn Low Kah Ling of Klang, with each receiving RM5,000 and RM2,500 respectively.

Philip Yap, Chief Judge, MIFF Furniture Design Competition noted, “Our effort to scout for talents has been reciprocated with favourable responses. Out of our top 10 finalists, we have at least half of the participants are from various industry practitioners, meaning we are attracting designers of other disciplines to also taking part in the competition. Their participation fast tracks the formation of the collaborative platform between the design industry and the furniture industry.”

Zilahi Imre, Chief Judge, Furniture Excellence Award said, “The jury had the general impression that in the past couple of years, the furniture industry of Malaysia is improving constantly the quality of design. Now those who want to be international exporters have more furniture with contemporary design and this can grow their chances not only to neighbouring countries but also to Europe, CIS countries and also the United States.”

Of special mentions are the 20 up-and-coming designers who exhibited under the Design STARS collective at the IFFS/AFS Singapore, and the select groups of designers or design studios that participated in the International Design Showcase. For many of these individuals, IFFS was a priceless opportunity for them to gain greater exposure. Design STAR participant, Mr Kok Yih Ming, Design Principal of Kudzu Pte Ltd (Singapore), revealed, “I don’t usually engage in publicity activities for my business but being part of the showcase gave me added media exposure, which I appreciate a lot. I’ve received good response towards my designs, and I might come back as a paying exhibitor next year.” Yet another noteworthy feature was the Furniture Design Award (FDA)

Showcase, which consists of competition entries submitted by the 11 finalists of FDA 2016.

Commenting on her decision to participate, Grand Winner, Ms Katarzyna Kempa (Poland), said, “I was first attracted to compete because I identified with what FDA stands for. The prize and the opportunity to visit Singapore were bonuses, and I’m glad I applied because being at IFFS is a significant milestone for me. It is far different than other European shows I’ve been to in terms of aesthetics, materials, and visitor interest. IFFS gave me the chance to gather new Asian contacts, and also to learn from others even as I present my pieces and my perspective. I’m expectant about future collaborations and opportunities that may arise from this.”

DESIGNERS' DESK

Sebastian Herkner The Design Maestro

Sebastian Herkner has been gaining popularity in the design community for combining new technologies with traditional craftsmanship. He designs furniture and lamps, porcelain and glass, tableware and showrooms. He also works on interior design projects and for exhibitions and museums.

Born in 1981 in Bad Mergentheim, Herkner studied product design at the Offenbach University of Art and Design. His year-long stint in London where he did an internship for the fashion label Stella McCartney, helped him to get a better understanding for materials, colors, structures and textures. In 2006, the designer founded his own studio.

DESIGNERS’ DESK

Speaking about his idea of design, Sebastian Herkner says, “I want to create classic objects, with a high quality which become kind of companions in your life.” His products highlight the multifaceted beauty of the materials and draw renewed attention to small details. Today, he is working with top international brands like ClassiCon, Dedon, Fontana Arte, La Chance, Moroso, Pulpo, Rosenthal and Very Wood.

Herkner first broke into the international design scene with his “Bell Table” for which he won the Red Dot Design Award in 2010. His designs have received multiple prizes – for example the 2011 German Design Award in the Newcomer category, the EDIDA Award for Best International Newcomer in 2015 and Guest of Honor at imm cologne 2016. According to the designer, “Success is not winning an award; it is more about getting a nice feedback or a picture of your design from a person who owns one of your designs.”

We spoke to Sebastian Herkner to know more about his design principles. He shares with us his views and opinions on few of his successful projects, on winning awards and prizes, and his upcoming projects. Read on.

DESIGNERS’ DESKFAE: When did you realise you wanted to do something in the line of designing?Sebastian Herkner: Since I can remember, I was creative and wanted to develop objects, furniture, fashion. For me it was absolutely clear to open my studio and to transfer my ideas and approach into designs.

FAE: How would you like to define your style of design?SH: It is about senses, responsibility, crafts and material and color. It is nothing trendy. It is more the opposite. I want to create classic objects, with a high quality which become kind of companions in your life.

FAE: Interning at Stella McCartney Ltd. London – how did that help you in your early career? SH: It was not about the career, it was more about an interdisciplinary impact. To learn about materials, colors in another scale than in industrial design.

FAE: Since setting up your studio in 2006, what has been the most memorable achievement for you?SH: Well, this year we did Das Haus 2016 at imm cologne fair in Germany. I was invited together with my studio to design a special installation as Guest of Honor. We created an open house, a house for people to stay and communicate. It was not a museum; it was a place to stay. We developed several new designs in collaboration

with brands like MOROSO, Linteloo, Agape, Fontana Arte, Nya Nordiska amongst others. It was an atmosphere and also a statement for hospitality. I see in my profession a responsibility and chance to criticize the society and to transport my attitude.

DESIGNERS’ DESK

FAE: You won the Red Dot Design Award in 2010 for Bell Table. What was your inspiration while making this collection? SH: The Bell table shows my design language and philosophy very well. I want to irritate, putting things upside down, working with different materials. I designed it already in 2009, there was almost nothing made of brass and glass in contemporary furniture design. I always want to go another way. The Bell Table is different to other side tables. The metal is on the top and the glass on the bottom. This is not conventional, this is different. My designs should be like this.

FAE: Share with us some details about the very beautiful Collana collection of vases – that also received a Special Mention at the German Design Award 2015.SH: I wanted to combine two classic and crafted materials. Porcelain and glass. It is a combination of material but also surfaces and colors. The glass element is like a collar, it surrounds the flowers, protects them or highlights them as well. It is like a nimbus. On the other hand the vase Collana has something sculptural, even without flowers it

looks amazing and not empty. I think this is an important issue, that objects look also beautiful without use.

FAE: Your special installation "Das Haus - Interiors on Stage"was one of the major highlights at this year’s imm cologne. Please tell us your idea behind the ‘open concept of home’? SH: Das Haus 2016 was round, with various layers and areas. We used more than 600 sq. m. of curtains we developed together with our German partner Nya

Page 26: Chapter Name - furniture-magazine.us€¦ · New York, N.Y. 10001 USA Ph : +1 917 677 7753 editor@furniture-magazine.com Chitralekha Banerjee Since time immemorial, lights have been

DESIGNERS’ DESK

Nordiska. The idea was to have soft walls, flexible walls and almost no corners. The curtains were transparent, translucent and moving on special rails automatically to change the perspective, the atmosphere between inside and outside.

Also the layout of the rooms was open. The courtyard in the middle connected all areas like kitchen, dining room, living room and lobby. It was the heart of Das Haus. Only the sleeping room and bathroom was more private and located in a glass cube. In total it was very sensitive, playing with shadows and light and also the senses like smelling and tasting. Design is not just about feeling and seeing. We served some tea and food during lunch. The visitors were sitting around in Das Haus. I liked these moments because I didn't want to create a museum. It should be a place for communication.

Smelling was the topic in the bathroom. There we created a more conceptual idea. The whole walls in the bath were covered with tiles specially made of coasted soap. This was something unusual, new and irritating for the visitors. Also something they had to realize and remember, because you can't take a photo.

FAE: Being one of the most sought-after designers today, how would you define success?SH: It is always a together between me and my great team and my partners I work together. Designing is very personal and you build a relationship with the brands for many years. Success is not winning an award, it is more about getting a nice feedback or a picture of your design from a person who owns one of your designs. But of course it is fantastic to have the opportunity to work with amazing craftsmen all over the world, from Colombia to Italy to Zimbabwe together.

FAE: And lastly, what are the recent projects you are working on?SH: We are working on a few interiors at the moment as well on products which takes a bit longer and we will present on the upcoming design shows.

Amazing fabric collections from CamiraGlobal textile innovator, Camira, had pushed color palettes and patterns to the max at this year’s NeoCon with the Synergy Collection, comprising three new wool blend fabrics: Synergy, Individuo and Zig Zag.

Synergy

Synergy is the newest addition to the manufacturer’s extensive wool

blend fabric collection, which is a high-performance seating fabric and includes its largest color offering of 75 intelligent shades.

Synergy is a natural evolution of Camira’s bestselling wool fabric, Blazer. It’s softer and stronger, lighter and brighter. Made from premium New Zealand wool and combined with just 5 per cent nylon, Synergy has a finer finish while achieving 100,000 double rubs.

The Synergy palette boasts an enchanting kaleidoscope of colors suitable for a wide range of interior environments. The development of each colorway was a

Hayley Barrett, designer of the Synergy range, observed that “creating Synergy has been a journey of discovery. We wanted to give architects and designers the full spectrum of colors that complement one another. Experimenting and using colors together, or selecting tones that work well with

other materials, opens up new combinations and surprising color stories.

“Synergy is a progression from Blazer and although it maintains similarities, the wider color range and inclusion of nylon means we’ve been able to develop a fabric that looks beautiful but also stands up to the toughest scenarios.”

As water is a core utility for wool textile manufacturing, Camira is supporting international water aid charity, Just a Drop, with its Wool for Water campaign to help deliver accessible, clean and safe water where it is needed most. For every yard of Synergy sold, Camira will make a donation to a project in Kenya.

Being unique is all about being different and this is just the case with Individuo, Camira’s tie-dye effect fabric on Synergy.

Individuo has a distinctive look and feel, and is available in four contemplative colorways. Its fluid,

High on Style: High Point (Spring) MarketThe spring edition of High Point Market held in end of April, brought out the same amount of excitement like the other editions of the Market.

Tantalizing new furnishings, distinctive finishes, gorgeous fabrics, incredible educational seminars, and enjoyable networking parties reenergized the visitors with creative ideas to bring home.

The prestigious tastemakers of our 2016 Style Spotters team also had a blast. With a unique perspective based on their own design style and preferences, each has selected the top trends from Spring Market. Please enjoy this special, curated collection of styles for the new season till it's autumn- time for another magical Market!

The idea of relaxing in a Caribbean villa was prevalent in many collections. Jute, a natural fiber found in many parts of the world, was one of the material highlights of Market.

Geometric patterns were everywhere, and their prominence indicated that companies are not afraid to express a love of pattern.

Beautiful, round forms permeated so many collections this season. Top trendsetter Kelly Wearstler mixed materials in pieces of a playful scale, accented in rounded forms and contemporary polka dots. Masculine interiors, inspired by the emergence of men

being more involved in the home, have dominated a trend toward more masculine forms. Sharp and calculated, masculine pieces were all over Spring Market.

We’ve spent years embracing the strength and power that industrial elements deliver to a space, but Spring Market was all about getting in touch with the softer side of design.

Showrooms flaunted combinations of lustrous gold and creamy white, and featured furnishings with sculptural, curved silhouettes in unexpectedly serene color palettes (think muted shades of blush and lavender), topped with subtle metal accents in multilayered antique finishes.

There is a strong trend toward vintage looks with unique contemporary updates. The Deniot Iron Eye Credenza for Baker Furniture is a deconstructed Louis XVI dresser.

Shagreen, vellum, and hair on hide were a huge hit in designs that wowed by wrapping the entire piece.

The hallmarks of 70’s design were everywhere this year, in particular with the strong presence of rattan throughout the showrooms. A distinctive shade of deep, inky green played the role of a neutral in all

furniture and decor applications this Market.

I loved the new vintage looks at Spring Market! Chinoiserie - traditional and subtly contemporary - was on point, making appearances everywhere from entire walls, to furnishings, to detailed accessories.

Showrooms were filled with geodes, quartz, and geometric shapes.

It seems that we can’t get enough of organic forms. And while it seems impossible to compete with the perfection of nature, it can be almost comical to find fine furnishings

carrying the likeness of our favorite freshwater species.

From the sexy, saturated hues at Lillian August, or the piercing colors at Thibaut, to the bright, peppy prints at CR Laine, you couldn’t turn around at any point at Market and not be dazzled with a parade of turquoise, jade, or citron.

Malouf launches organic biodegradable mattress

Malouf has revealed its most significant innovation – the Flower Bed – an

organic, biodegradable mattress infused with natural botanical seeds and aromatherapy oils.

The Flower Bed is made of finest materials. Its proprietary memory foam, called MrclFm (pronounced miracle foam), is not only supportive, but also plush to create the perfect cradling feeling. The foam is infused with carefully selected seeds and curing essential oils to enhance your sleep experience. Finally, the mattress is wrapped in a breathable Tencel cover.

The FlowerBed comes pre-seeded with a hand-selected blend of flower seeds that are non-GMO to ensure enhanced beauty. MrclFm maintains homeostatic humidity perfect for seed germination. This unique organic mattress smells like a bed of flowers and feels

like a dream; it is truly like sleeping on a bed of flowers.

Hamilton Hyve, the chief product officer of Malouf, said, “Comfort is all fine and well, but we wanted to invent something truly innovative; ground breaking so to speak. We wanted to give back to our customers and give back to the earth. The most significant feature of the Flower Bed is that it actually becomes a flower bed.”

MrclFm is free from harmful chemicals and made from certified green materials that are all natural, post consumer, compostable and 100 percent biodegradable. The Flower Bed solves the complex problems of getting rid of an old mattress and, instead of rotting in a landfill, it biodegrades naturally while beautifying your yard with flowers.
