back in mid april as chapter turned 40 i was unveiled as the new, incoming Director. since then i have been itching to get my feet under the table. as you turn the pages of this brochure i will have just started. my only achievements will have been locating my office and figuring out how the kettle works!to lead chapter into its next 40 years is a huge honour. chapter is a unique arts centre, a huge success story for cardiff and Wales, and i pay tribute to the outgoing Director Janek for his efforts and thank him for the welcome he has given me. What makes chapter unique is the way artistic ideas emerge (often over a coffee in the social space), develop and then come to fruition whether it is music, theatre, visual arts or cinema. that concept is dynamic, exciting and no doubt a little fraught at times. i look forward to working with the chapter team and resident companies to continue producing, facilitating and presenting the very best work for our audiences and communities. this summer we have a fantastic programme lined up including a celebration of 25 years of the magdalena project, a season of films by muppets maestro Jim henson and an exhibition curated by simon morrissey in the gallery.you, our audiences and customers are key to the success of chapter; quite simply we can’t do it without you, particularly in these austere times. i look forward to meeting as many of you as possible and receiving feedback on what we do well and what we can improve on. chapter is an ideas place and so your ideas and opinions are valued. you are always welcome to email me at [email protected], i will reply.thank you and enjoy the summer.

Fri 8 July — Sun 4 September • Gwe 8 Gorffennaf — Sul 4 Medithis exhibition takes its title from the refrain of ‘new millennium homes’, a song by rage against the machine from their seminal album ‘battle of los angeles’. rage against the machine were renowned for their abrasive, polemic music and achieved huge commercial success in the 1990s, providing the perfect soundtrack to the idea of rebellion against authority.A Fire in the Master’s House is Set suggests a somewhat contradictory space — a space where ideas of political, social or youthful resistance are invoked but simultaneously overlaid with the idea of the latent or the mute. it sets out to create a proposition where ideas of opposition, social defiance, protest, hedonism — so often the social language of music culture — are distanced or enfolded within abstracted forms.some of the works in the exhibition reference music’s cultural position as a repository for social and political expression, or moments of protest directly. but these references are often diffused or distorted into new forms. set in direct dialogue with the more abstract languages in the exhibition an atmosphere is created that is suggestive of an incantation or spell being formulated through their combination to release a latent power held within the works.the exhibition colonises chapter beyond the gallery space and even extends into the fabric of the city, intervening with colour, sound, objects and text to involve the public as participants in releasing the spirit of subversion and possibility held within its structures.Simon Morrissey is a curator and writer and Director of WORKS|PROJECTS, Bristol and Foreground Projects, Frome.www.worksprojects.co.uk www.foregroundprojects.org.uk

assembly: art in the bar annabelle sheltonUntil Sun 3 July • Tan Sul 3 GorffennafAnnabelle Shelton draws influence from her social and geographical investigations of space and environment. she uses extensive photographic documentation, as well as memory, to create rich, detailed studies that are then re-presented using layers of watercolour and pencil. interested in the Japanese art of ‘Ukiyo-e’ (traditionally meaning ‘sad world’), annabelle takes the more recent translation ‘floating world’ as inspiration for her playful, dreamlike and sometimes surreal landscapes. she takes us on a personal journey, revealing elements of the familiar through her unique use of positive and negative space. annabelle is exhibiting a number of previous works alongside a new painting specially created for chapter.

born in 1968 in london, annabelle attended staffordshire University stoke on trent and Uce birmingham, and is now based in milton Keynes. she is represented by rarity gallery, greece, and bedford street gallery, UK, and is a founding member of market project, based in the east of england.www.annabelleshelton.com www.marketproject.co.uk

Q&AName: Katy Sinclair-Thomson

Job title: Assistant Sales and Ticketing Manager

How long have you worked at Chapter? 20 years. I got a job in the bar to get some holiday money together and I’m still here!

Does that make you the longest standing member of staff!? Scarily, it almost does.

Do you think your son Josh will still be working here in 20 years? No, he has a sense of adventure and will probably be halfway around the world by then!

Best memory at Chapter? Camping out at the back of the building for our own Blair Witch experience is a bizarre one that springs to mind.

Your favourite Chapter event? I loved the Peter Liversidge exhibition last year and the whole concept of ideas being made into reality.

What do you get up to outside of Chapter? Currently lots of DIY — we’re doing up a house.

Do you have any hidden talents? I take the occasional half decent snap.

If money was no object what would you buy? A VW campervan would definitely be on my list.

Who would you like to play you in a film of your life? Olivia Newton John

What’s your favourite snack? Friday’s homemade cakes in the Box Office.

Tell us a secret… I once did a Charlie’s Angel style kick to open the old Chapter front doors. (They shattered.)

Tell us a joke… Why couldn’t the coffee bean go out to play? He was grounded.

muscle by greg cullen Wed 27 — Sat 30 July • 8pm • Mer 27 — Sad 30 Gorff + Sat 30 July • 2pm • Sad 30 Gorfflove us or loathe us, men are everywhere. We have the habit of popping up, often unexpectedly, in your beds, wombs, wars and conversations. you find us in your arms, nightmares and fondest memories. We come, for better or for worse, in guises as disparate as grandfather and son, priest and lover, yet apparently we all hail from mars. no wonder being a man is problematic; it’s dangerous, pressured, ridiculous, funny and sometimes tragic, but it is also capable of being something beautiful. this richly textured fusion of theatre, dance, music and documentary returns to chapter following two sell-out runs last year, and prior to shows at the edinburgh festivals. inspired by poignant interviews with males of all ages from across Wales, and performed by an eclectic all male cast, Muscle has been created by writer/director Greg Cullen and choreographer/dancer Phil Williams with music by Benjamin Talbott.£12/£8/£6 www.muscleproject.org

stevenage by mandy romero Tue 30 Aug • 8pm • Maw 30 Awst

“in august of 1968 a young man wearing a brown corduroy suit travelled from his home in the midlands and ran away to stevenage new town. something happened there, or didn’t happen, and what happened because of what didn’t happen is what you are paying to have me tell you. Well, that’s not entirely true. i invited you. but you must have been interested enough to come. and it means that i must have a stake in all this. putting things straight. getting it all out in the open...”

Stevenage is a multimedia solo performance by transgender artist Mandy Romero. stevenage — the first english new town — is an unlikely subject, but it’s a performance which beautifully explores many interlinked lives — the ‘young man in the brown corduroy suit’, an english pastoral poet, a young woman who moved south in the early years of the 20th century, a young film actor, a town, two villages and the lives of a post-war generation. conceived and created by Mandy Romero. Directed by Cathy Butterworth. £10/£8/£6 Presented as part of Cardiff LGBT Mardi Gras Arts Festival 2011. For full listings go to www.cardiffmardigras.co.uk or www.facebook.com/cardiffmardigras

When her tyrannical industrialist husband is taken hostage by the striking employees of his umbrella factory, a 70s trophy wife (Deneuve) takes the reins of the family business and proves to be a remarkably effective boss, to everyone’s surprise. helped by her ex-lover (Depardieu), the town’s communist mayor, she puts an end to the strike and gets the factory running again. but when her husband returns, the situation gets complicated… a screwball french comedy about the war between the sexes and classes, directed by francois ozon with great style and affection.

bad film club: the incredible 2-headed transplantSun 3 July • Sul 3 GorffUsa/1971/87mins/ctba. Dir: anthony m. lanza. With bruce Dern, pat priest, casey Kasem.

it’s the last Bad Film Club before a short summer break, and nicko and Joe are lending their irreverent, rather hilarious, live commentary to another treat from their collection of terrible — in a good way — films.this early 70s beauty centres on Dr roger girard, a mad scientist who has a penchant for head transplantation. When a ‘psycho-killer’ breaks into his home, girard takes decisive action, gunning him down in his tracks. things take a turn for the hilarious/macabre when he decides that the offenders head would be a perfect addition to the body of his caretaker’s son, and the resulting two-headed monster escapes into the surrounding countryside.

Incendies Fri 1 — Thu 7 July • Gwe 1 — Iau 7 GorffCanada/France/2010/131mins/subtitled/15. Dir: Denis Villeneuve. With: Lubna Azabal, Mélissa Désormeaux-Poulin, Maxim Gaudette.

At the reading of their mother’s will, Canadian twins Jeanne and Simon are given letters which will profoundly change the direction of their lives. They are set the task of returning to the Middle East to track down a father and brother they have never known. Their journey to Lebanon is intertwined with the parallel story of their mother’s journey through the war-ravaged country of the 1970s in search of the child she was forced to give up. Director Denis Villeneuve’s critically acclaimed adaptation of a prize-winning play by Wajdi Mouawad is part political polemic, part detective story — a powerful and emotionally charged thriller set against the background of Lebanon’s tumultuous history.Nominated for Best Foreign Language Oscar 2010

Fel cyd-ddisgybl i’r dyn hyfryd a’r bocsiwr byd-enwog Howard Winstone yn Ysgol Gynradd Penydarren, Merthyr Tudful yn y 1940au roedd gen i ddiddordeb arbennig mewn gweld y ffilm newydd, Risen: The Howard Winstone Story (Neil Jones). Mae Howard (Stuart Brennan) eisoes yn ei arddegau ar ddechrau’r ffilm, ac yn focsiwr amatur uchel ei barch. Mae’n hapus gyda’i swydd yn gweithio peiriant mewn ffatri deganau tan iddo gael damwain erchyll sydd yn ddigon i beryglu ei ddyfodol fel bocsiwr ond oherwydd penderfyniad cariadus ei dad (Boyd Clack) a’i fam (Helen Griffin) a hyfforddi ysbrydoledig Eddie Thomas (John Noble) mae’n dysgu technegau newydd, yn ymarfer yn ddiflino ac yn cael gyrfa broffesiynol ddisglair gan gipio Pencampwriaeth Pwysau Plu y byd. Wrth ddarlunio’r camau yn ei yrfa mae’r ffilm yn dilyn trefn amseryddol daclus. Mae hyn yn siwr o fod o gymorth i’r gwylwyr cyffredin nad ydynt yn hyddysg yn hanes bocsio.Fel y nodwyd eisoes doedd llwybr Howard i lwyddiant ddim yn un hawdd. Collodd dair gornest yn erbyn Vicente Salvidar (Erik Morales) a’r ffilm yn awgrymu nad oedd y reffari yn gwbl deg bob tro. A dyna’r ffaith i’w briodas gyntaf gael ei chwalu fel canlyniad i anffyddloneb ei wraig, Benita (Grainne Joughin). Mae’r ffilm i’w chanmol am beidio â phortreadu Benita mewn ffordd gwbl negyddol. Dangosir fod ganddi achos i deimlo’n anhapus wrth i Howard roi ei yrfa o flaen popeth arall. Mae Grainne Joughin i’w chanmol hefyd gan mai hi yw’r unig aelod o’r cast sy’n defnyddio acen Merthyr sy’n argyhoeddi. Mae’r prif actorion eraill yn arddel acenion Cymreig amlbwrpas, ar wahân i John Noble sydd ag acen syfrdanol o unigryw.Mae actio’r prif actorion yn ddi-fai ac mae Stuart Brennan, sy’n llawn haeddu’r Bafta a enillwyd ganddo, yn cyfleu’n wych y gwahanol gyfnodau ym mywyd Howard a’i ymateb iddynt. Fodd bynnag, i mi, actor gorau’r ffilm ydy Boyd Clack. Er nad yw ar y sgrin trwy’r ffilm mae’n sefydlu personoliaeth gref sy’n aros yn y cof ac yn angor ysbrydol ac emosiynol i’r cyfan.Braf gweld golygfeydd Merthyr yn cael lle amlwg yn y ffilm: yn eu plith Gellifaelog a’r Rocky Road, chwareli Morlais, y Pant a Phontsarn. Does dim dwywaith mai llafur cariad i bawb oedd gwneud y ffilm hon. Doedd yr adnoddau ariannol ddim yn hawdd eu sicrhau a buon nhw’n ffilmio yn 2006, 2008 a 2010. Yn y cyfamser roedd Stuart Brennan yn cael ei hyfforddi i fod yn focsiwr go-iawn. Dyna paham, ac mae diolch hefyd i’r technegau a fabwysiadwyd gan y cyfarwyddwr, y mae’r gornestau bocsio mor realistig a chredadwy.I mi roedd gwylio’r ffilm hon yn brofiad emosiynol. Mae teulu Howard wrth ei bodd gyda hi a dwi’n gobeithio mai dyna fydd ymateb pawb a’i gwêl yn y sinema ac ar DVD.

this ‘hard hitting’ biopic takes an appropriately old-fashioned look at the life of Welshman howard Winstone (stuart brennan), who took the World featherweight championship in 1968. Winstone shot to fame in the 60s with an impressive record (67 fights, 61 wins) and a distinctive handicap — he’d lost three of the fingertips from his right hand in an industrial accident — which forced him to develop a new fighting style. Risen features a cracking supporting cast including chapter regular boyd clack as Winstone’s dignified miner dad, and grainne Joughin as the wife who comes to hate the life her husband has chosen.

cult director takeshi miike delivers a fine period action film which elegantly evokes an era where modern times are encroaching on Japan, and the shogunate is corrupt, decadent and a hive of nepotism. lavished with traditional costumes, sharp characterisations, and gloriously choreographed fight sequences, the film follows a group of unemployed samurai who are enlisted to bring down a sadistic barbaric and possibly insane lord and prevent him from ascending to the throne and plunging the country into a wartorn future.

two in the Wave Fri 1 — Thu 7 July • Gwe 1 — Iau 7 Gorfffrance/2009/90mins/subtitled/12a. Dir: emmanuel laurent. With anouk aimee, charles aznavour, Jean-paul belmondo.

Two in the Wave tells the fascinating story of the relationship between Jean-luc godard and francois truffaut. born within 2 years of each other in the early 1930s, their love of movies, their friendship and subsequent break-up embody the story of french cinema. they began writing in the same magazines in the 1950s and loyally supported each other in their early filmmaking exploits. but history and politics separated them in the late 60s as godard plunged deeper into radical politics. by the time truffaut died in 1984, the two old friends had not seen or spoken to each other for over 10 years. Utilising rare archival footage, interviews and film excerpts, this insightful documentary takes us back to a prodigious decade that transformed the world of cinema and on to the difficult later years of their relationship.

french new Wavela nouvelle vague was an explosion of vibrant, innovative and highly self-conscious films spearheaded by critics from film journal ‘cahiers du cinéma’, their bold, modern writing style translated into film. they found audiences hungry for a new, energetic, political cinema with a different kind of hero and heroine. the wave broke in the late 1950s but continued to ripple onwards and continues to influence filmmakers today. this season of films celebrates two of its figureheads, Jean-luc godard and francois trauffaut.

Just Do itSun 31 July — Thu 4 Aug • Sul 31 Gorff — Iau 4 AwstUK/2011/90mins/ctba. Dir: emily James

a crowd-funded, behind-the-scenes portrait of UK climate activists by documentary filmmaker emily James. With unprecedented access, she filmed the clandestine activities of these modern-day outlaws for more than a year. always in the thick of the action, emily saddled up with the climate rush ‘bike rush’ as they brought Westminster to a standstill; pitched up with the climate camp which occupied blackheath; masked up with the great climate swoop as they stormed the fences at ratcliffe-on-soar coal power station; and then accompanied them all to wintry copenhagen as they took their protest to the streets outside the Un climate talks. Just Do It is an entertaining and illuminating introduction to a powerful cast of mischievous and inspiring characters whose world has remained largely secretive, until now.

the conspirator Fri 5 — Thu 11 Aug • Gwe 5 — Iau 11 AwstUsa/2010/123mins/12a. Dir: robert redford. With James mcavoy, robin Wright, tom Wilkinson.

in the wake of abraham lincoln’s assassination, seven men and one woman are arrested and charged with conspiring to kill the president, the vice-president, and the secretary of state. the lone woman charged, mary surratt, owns a boarding house where John Wilkes booth and others met and planned the simultaneous attacks. against the ominous back-drop of post-civil War Washington, newly-minted lawyer, frederick aiken, a 28-year-old Union war-hero, reluctantly agrees to defend surratt before a military tribunal. as the trial unfolds, aiken realises his client may be innocent and that she is being used as bait and hostage in order to capture the only conspirator to have escaped a massive manhunt, her own son.

When it comes to relationships, we’re all beginners. this touching comedy/drama looks at how deeply funny and transformative life can be, even during its most serious moments. oliver (ewan mcgregor) meets the irreverent and unpredictable anna (mélanie laurent of Inglourious Basterds) only months after his father has passed away.this new love floods oliver with memories of his father, who, following the death of his wife of 45 years, came out of the closet to live a full, energised, and wonderfully tumultuous gay life. the upheavals brought father and son closer than they’d ever been and now oliver must try to love anna with all the bravery, humour and hope that his father taught him.

the tree of lifeFri 12 — Thu 25 Aug • Gwe 12 — Iau 25 AwstUsa/2011/138mins/ctba. Dir: terence malick. With brad pitt, sean penn, Jessica chastain.

Wildly ambitious and certainly one of the strangest hollywood films of recent years, terence malick’s latest is the most personal film of his enigmatic career (including Badlands and Days of Heaven). We journey with Jack (sean penn) through the innocence of his childhood in the 1950s to his disillusioned adult years as he strives to reconcile with his father (brad pitt). this is a film with a keen eye for metaphor and image, concerned with asking grand questions about spirituality and the brutish role of nature without expecting any easy answers. a bold and fearless film where everyone involved has risen to malick’s challenge and created something extraordinary. Winner of the Palm d’Or Cannes 2011

fire in babylonFri 5 — Thu 11 Aug • Gwe 5 — Iau 11 AwstUK/2010/86mins/12a. Dir: stevan riley. With viv richards, gordon greenidge, colin croft.

they brought the world to its knees, and a nation to its feet. a treat for cricket-lovers, or just fans of a great story, Fire In Babylon relives the West indies’ journey from cheerful ‘calypso cricket’ losers to formidable winners. in a turbulent era of apartheid in south africa, race riots in england and civil unrest in the caribbean, the West indian cricketers, led by the enigmatic viv richards, struck a defiant blow at the forces of white prejudice worldwide. one of the most gifted teams in sporting history, their undisputed skill, combined with a fearless spirit, allowed them to dominate the genteel game at the highest level, replaying it on their own terms. this is their story, told in their own words.

project nimFri 19 — Thu 25 Aug • Gwe 19 — Iau 25 AwstUsa/2011/99mins/12a. Dir: James marsh. With bob angelina, bern cohen, reagan leonard.

the latest film from the oscar-winning team behind Man On Wire tells the story of nim, the chimpanzee who in the 1970s became the focus of a landmark experiment which aimed to show that an ape could learn to communicate with language if raised and nurtured like a human child. following nim’s extraordinary journey through human society, and the enduring impact he makes on the people he meets along the way, this is an unflinching and unsentimental biography of an animal we tried to make human. What we learn about his true nature — and indeed our own — is comic, revealing and profoundly unsettling.

the messenger Fri 29 July — Thu 4 Aug • Gwe 29 Gorff — Iau 4 Awst Usa/2009/113mins/15. Dir: oren moverman. With Woody harrelson, ben foster, samantha morton.

how would you greet the worst possible news imaginable? this heartrending tale of soldiers with the dreaded assignment of notifying family that their loved ones have died in battle is a wholly different look at the fallout of the iraq War and its effect on soldiers and civilians. for the families these soldiers represent death itself, yet despite the grim subject The Messenger is a sweet-tempered film with moments of real humour and great depth of feeling. With an excellent performance from a stony faced Woody harrelson and a wonderful script this is one of the most shrewdly perceptive portraits of military men to have appeared in american cinema in recent years.

The first Iranian film to win the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival, Asghar Farhadi’s story is in essence simple, but raises complex and globally relevant questions about issues of responsibility, inflexibility and tyranny set against the backdrop of modern Iran.

the big pictureFri 19 — Thu 25 Aug • Gwe 19 — Iau 25 Awstfrance/2010/114mins/subtitled/ctba. Dir: eric lartigau. With: roman Duris, marina foïs, niels arestrup.

paul exben is a success story — partner in one of paris’s most exclusive law firms, big salary, big house, glamorous wife and two sons. but when he finds out that his wife is cheating on him, a rush of blood provokes paul into a fatal error. When he realises that there is a chance for him to live out his dreams and re-invent himself, he flees to an isolated part of former yugoslavia on the beautiful adriatic coast. here, he gets another shot at being himself and, at last, seeing the big picture. this french thriller skilfully studies the idea of moral ambivalence, while also looking at the nature of identity and the perils of modern globalism.

sarah’s KeyFri 19 Aug — Thu 1 Sept • Gwe 19 Awst — Iau 1 Medifrance/2010/111mins/subtitled/ctba. Dir: gilles paquet-brenner. With Kristen scott thomas, mélusine mayance, niels arestrup.

Julia Jarmond, an american journalist married to a frenchman, is commissioned to write an article about the notorious vel d’hiv round up, which took place in paris, in 1942. she stumbles upon a family secret which will link her forever to the destiny of a young Jewish girl, sarah. Julia learns that the apartment she and her husband bertrand plan to move into was acquired by his family when its Jewish occupants were dispossessed and deported 60 years before. she resolves to find out what happened to the parents of 10-year-old sarah. the more Julia discovers, the more she uncovers about bertrand’s family, about france and, finally, herself. Dealing with the difficult history of france’s role in the rounding up of Jews during nazi occupation, Kristen scott thomas gives another beautifully measured performance in this gentle detective story.

in a better World Fri 26 Aug — Thu 1 Sept • Gwe 26 Awst — Iau 1 MediDenmark/2010/119mins/subtitled/ctba. Dir: susanne bier. With mikael persbrandt, trine Dyrholm, markus rygaard.

having worked in a brutal, war-torn corner of africa, anton goes back to his idyllic life in suburban Denmark only to find a different type of viciousness in the schoolyard of his son’s school. his eldest, elias, has been saved from his bullies by new kid christian. it quickly becomes apparent that after his mother’s death something deep inside christian has snapped and anton’s pacifist argument seems weak. this oscar-winning film demonstrates that each action has its consequences and the solution to an ugly problem is not always obvious.

“Bier has a potent gift for turning abstract, moral questions like these into edge-of-your-seat compelling dramas that examine, with devastating effect, the complex web of feelings that make us who we are” — Los Angeles Times

gianni, a recently retired house husband, has many things to worry about but romance is not one of them. he lives with his wife and daughter in a small apartment in rome, filling his days by walking his neighbour’s dogs, picking up groceries, paying bills and being taken for granted by his daughter and her lazy boyfriend. his glamorous but ancient mother is swiftly draining gianni’s resources on poker, repairs and expensive champagne. one day his old friend alfonso, inspired by his own surprising sexual escapades, decides it’s time for gianni to get a girlfriend and reacquaint himself with some of life’s pleasures. With this story that says much about berlusconi’s italy, gianni Di gregorio (Mid-August Lunch) has once again turned in a charming funny film.
