CHAPTER IV

DOING PRESENTATION

FEAR AND NERVOUS OF DOING PRESENTATIONS Most people are afraid of public speaking because they

fear and are embarrassed of making mistakes in front of others.

Even professional speakers occasionally make mistakes. The

difference is that they do not think that the error is a

barrier to success. The secret is to accept that the error is a

common thing and it is necessary to develop public speaking

skills in a short time. In this case, however, many business

presenters think that they get frustrated if the audience is

unable to understand their presentation. Vocabulary: embarrassed(malu); barrier(rintangan); common thing(hal yg biasa)

Most of students often find themselves in difficulty when

they give a presentation to an audience. Even, a sales manager

might get difficulty and feel frightened while giving sales

presentation to a large or a small audience. Such problems are

also happened to student when he/she is required to give

presentation in front of the class or an audience. He/she will

get nervous or do not have self confidence because he/she

imagine that he/she is standing in the front class, in front35

Page 2: CHAPTER IV DOING PRESENTATION FEAR AND NERVOUS OF DOING PRESENTATIONS

Business English II Accounting Department D-IIIDra. Husna Maani, M.Pd-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------of a lecturer, all classmates that he/she knows. He/she sees

that all eyes are on him/her and all of classmates have high

expectations to him/her. Every word he/she says, appearance,

voice tone, the content of the presentation, will be examined

in every way. At the moment, he/she has a difficult feeling as

if he/she might say the wrong things or will make a mistake and

feel very disturbed. Meanwhile, he/she knows what to say and

he/she knows the material. Vocabulary: frightened(ketakautan); required(diminta); appearance(penampilan);

disturbed(terganggu)

To overcome such problems, students need to practice

speaking before giving presentation. It is essential for them

to practice whether it is the first time for them to speak in

front of the class or an audience or they are an experienced

public speaker. Students need to

make sure that they should have a strong motivation to speak

English and have self confidence so that they can communicate

fluently. Don’t say that you are afraid of making mistakes and

you feel that your classmates will laugh at you while speaking

English. Don’t avoid speaking to other students or lecturers

because of your fear of making mistakes, trouble finding the

right words, your grammar and pronunciation that are not

perfect. The point is that your friends understand with what

you say.Vocabulary: overcome(mengatasi); make sure(memastikan) fluently(dgn

lancer);avoid(menghindar);

36

Page 3: CHAPTER IV DOING PRESENTATION FEAR AND NERVOUS OF DOING PRESENTATIONS

In order to achieve the goal, students need to involve

themselves more in group discussions and speaking activities.

They should practice speaking individually by doing

presentation to the class. Alternately, all of students will

have his or her turn to stand up in front of the class to

explain or describe his/her own topic or the result of group

discussion and then engage in a question and answer for a few

minutes. Vocabulary: achieve(mencapai); involve(melibatkan); alternately(secara

bergantian);engage(ikut serta);

DO STUDENTS’S PRESENTATION BENEFIT TO STUDENTS WHO LISTEN?

Almost all of us agree that the students’ presentations

will provide significant benefit to the students themselves. By

doing presentations, they learn how to speak in front a group,

how to get the professional skill that can be applied broadly.

They learn how to prepare material for class or public

presentation, and practice to improve their speaking skills.

However, the instructors or lecturers who have let students do

presentations in class do not realize that there is a negative

aspect happened. For example, the instructors or lecturers

noticed so far how the rest of the students in the classroom do

not give their respond to the presentations. Of course when the37

Page 4: CHAPTER IV DOING PRESENTATION FEAR AND NERVOUS OF DOING PRESENTATIONS

Business English II Accounting Department D-IIIDra. Husna Maani, M.Pd-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------teacher talks, students more or less have to pay attention, at

least some of the time, but when their classmates present, they

usually get bored. This atmosphere is not only makes the

presenter finds it difficult, but it also indicates that the

classmates who are listening do not have a learning experience.Vocabulary: provide(memberikan/menyediakan); significant(penting);broadly(secara luas lagi); notice(memperhatikan); atmosphere(suasana);indicates(menunjukkan);

One of the activities that usually can be done to overcome

classmates who are not interested in listening is to give

evaluation. Evaluating friends is one way of how the classmates

listen to the presentation that is being performed and

simultaneously they learn from it. They will give more careful

attention to what is being described by the presenter if the

evaluations they are doing is "count". Student is evaluated for

each presentation and the quality of feedback that students

provide will be increased if the criteria they use are the same

as the criteria used by the lecturer. It is obvious that the

activity of evaluating friends made students pay more attention

to the presentations. They agree that doing the evaluation has

made them get different experience, rather than only sitting

during the presentation without having any purpose, except as

the audience.Vocabulary: performed(berlangsung);simultaneously(secara bersamaan); provide(berikan); obvious(jelas); pay more attention(lebih memperhatikan); purpose(tujuan).

Actually some of the students do not agree if the

evaluation of classmates play a role in determining grades.

38

Page 5: CHAPTER IV DOING PRESENTATION FEAR AND NERVOUS OF DOING PRESENTATIONS

Business English II Accounting Department D-IIIDra. Husna Maani, M.Pd-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Although the lecturers' grades are higher than student-assigned

grades, the effect is quite important. The purpose is that the

feedback from classmates will greatly help in improving the

English skills of students’ next presentation.Vocabulary: determine(menentukan); grades(nilai);

GIVING PRESENTATIONS The following are the steps that need to be considered

before you give a presentation:

1. Think

a. Think about what you want to achieve

do you want to inform your classmates, to make them

to think about your topic, or convince them that your

presentation is interesting?

b. Think about your classmates or audience

do your classmates know about your topic? Are they

interested in your topic? How will you involve them

in your presentation?Vocabulary: achieve(tujuan); convince(meyakinkan);

2. Brainstorm

a. Think your topic and write a rough outline.

b. Remember that you have a limited time for your

presentation.

c. Organize your material, summarize it into a Power

Point and think about the length of time you have to

speak.

39

Page 6: CHAPTER IV DOING PRESENTATION FEAR AND NERVOUS OF DOING PRESENTATIONS

Business English II Accounting Department D-IIIDra. Husna Maani, M.Pd-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

d. Practice your presentation and note the time, it

should be in accordance with the specified time.

Invite a friend to listen to you and remind you when

the time is upVocabulary: rough outline(garis besar); organize(mengatur); in accordance with(sesuai dengan);

specified(waktu yg ditentukan); remind(mengingatkan).

3. Organizing The Content

a. Introduction

Catch your classmates’ attention:

Begin with a surprising comment or anything that will

make your classmates think.

State your purpose;

For example:

‘I’m going to talk about...’

‘This morning I want to explain…’

Show an outline of your presentation;

For example:

‘I will concentrate on the following points:

First of all…Then…

This will lead to… And finally…’

b. The Body

Use Power Point to make your presentation more

interesting.

Show your main points one by one in logical order.

Pause at the end of each point (give your classmates

time to take notes, or time to think about what you

are saying).

Make it very clear when you move to another point.

40

Page 7: CHAPTER IV DOING PRESENTATION FEAR AND NERVOUS OF DOING PRESENTATIONS

Business English II Accounting Department D-IIIDra. Husna Maani, M.Pd-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For example:

‘The next point is that ...’

‘OK, now I am going to talk about ...’

‘Right. Now I'd like to explain ... ’

‘Of course, we must not forget that ...’

‘However, it's important to realize that...’

Use clear examples to illustrate your points.

c. The Conclusion

It is very important to leave your audience with a

clear summary of everything you have covered.

It is also important to not let your presentation

failed. Make sure that you have managed to get to end

of the presentation.

Summarize the main points again, using phrases like:

‘To sum up...’

‘So, in conclusion...’

‘OK, to recap the main points…’

Thank the audience, and invite questions:

‘Thank you. Are there any questions?’

4. Delivering Your Presentation

a. Talk to your classmates or audience, don't read to

them!

b. A presentation is not the same as an essay.

c. If you read out your presentation as if it is an

essay, your classmates will understand it very little

and they will lose concentration quickly.

d. Speak to the classmates. Include each of them by

looking at him/her and maintaining eye-contact.

5. Consider your language!41

Page 8: CHAPTER IV DOING PRESENTATION FEAR AND NERVOUS OF DOING PRESENTATIONS

Business English II Accounting Department D-IIIDra. Husna Maani, M.Pd-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

a. Keep your language simple. The aim is to communicate,

not to show off your vocabulary.

b. Emphasize the key points—and make sure your classmates

realize which are the key points. Repeat them using

different phrasing.

c. Check the difficult pronunciation, or the unusual

pronunciation beforehand.

6. Use your Voice Clearly

a. Speak loudly enough for everyone in the room to hear

you.

At first, you may feel uncomfortable to speak loudly,

but if students can't hear you, they will not listen

to you.

b. Speak slowly and clearly.

Don’t too fast! Speaking fast doesn’t make you seem

smarter, it will only make it difficult for other

people to understand you.

c. Key words are important.

d. Vary your voice quality. If you always use the same

volume, for example, is always loud, or always soft,

or monotone, your classmates will get bored and do not

listen to you

e. When you begin with a new point, use a higher pitch

and volume.

f. Slow down for key points.

g. Use pauses—don't be afraid of short periods of

silence. (This way will give you a chance to gather

42

Page 9: CHAPTER IV DOING PRESENTATION FEAR AND NERVOUS OF DOING PRESENTATIONS

Business English II Accounting Department D-IIIDra. Husna Maani, M.Pd-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

your thoughts, and you’re your classmates a chance to

think.)

7. Use your body to communicate, too!

a. Stand straight and comfortable. Do not bend,

trembling, or swaying

b. Addressed your eyes. Look around and make eye contact

with classmates or audience. Do not just look to the

lecturer! Do not look the other way or to the wall. It

will make your friends will not listen to you.

c. While your are talking with your friends, you usually

use your hands (but not the left hand) and also with

your facial expression and body to strengthen your

communication. Do this way of talking in your

presentation. It will make your presentation much more

interesting for your friends or audience.

d. Don't turn your back on the classmates or audience

8. Interact with the audience

a. Be aware of how your audience is reacting.

Are they interested or bored? If they look confused,

ask them why.

Stop if necessary and explain a point again.

b. Check if the audience is still with you.

‘Does that make sense?’

‘Is that clear?’

c. Be open to questions.

If someone raises a hand, or asks a question in the

middle of your talk, answer it. If you can't answer

it, turn the question back out to your friends and let

someone else answer it!

43

Page 10: CHAPTER IV DOING PRESENTATION FEAR AND NERVOUS OF DOING PRESENTATIONS

Business English II Accounting Department D-IIIDra. Husna Maani, M.Pd-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

d. Questions are good. They show that the audience is

listening with interest. They should not be regarded

as an attack on you, but as a collaborative search for

deeper understanding.

e. Be prepared for a discussion session after the

presentation. If no one will say something, ask

questions, or discuss one point for discussion, then

you are ready to ask friends or audience to answer

your questions.

f. Be careful to:

Use bold typeface, and a minimum of size 16 font

(Check that your power point is readable)

Use no more than seven or eight main points on the

power point

Give your classmates or audience time to take notes

from your power point

Make sure your audience can see the screen [Where

are you

standing? Is it directly in front of the screen?]

Using color, pictures and graphs can make your power

point more interesting

9. Fight Against Nervous

The first few times you make a presentation, you will

be nervous. That is normal. It is a bit of adrenalin often

helps you to perform well. However, to make sure that your

nervousness does not become a problem, you may consider

the following ways:

44

Page 11: CHAPTER IV DOING PRESENTATION FEAR AND NERVOUS OF DOING PRESENTATIONS

Business English II Accounting Department D-IIIDra. Husna Maani, M.Pd-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

a. Smile! Your friends or audience will react warmly to

you if you smile and at least look relaxed.

b. Confess that you are nervous! Your friends or audience

will be very sympathetic—they know how you are

feeling.

c. Breathe deeply. It will calm you and help to control

your tremble that may seem on your hands and your

voice.
