III. Development Plan of Ortotic Prostetic Study Program A. Recent condition of Facility and Infrastructure

Area available for Orthotic Prosthetic Study Program in Physiotherapy

Faculty of Health Polytechnic Surakarta located in Jl. Kapt. Adi Sumarmo

Tohudan Colomadu Karanganyar is only enough for:

1. Two classrooms which capacity is 40 students for each.

2. Two laboratory of Orthotic Prosthetic which capacity is 20 students for

each.

3. One manager room / Teacher Room.

4. One warehouse.

B. Needs of Development of OP Study Program Facility and Infrastructure

In fulfilling the needs of Orthotic Prosthetic experts in Indonesia i.e.:

Hospital type A needs minimum 3 experts, Hospital type B minimum 2

experts, Hospital type C minimum 1 expert, it is necessary to organize

appropriate and sustainable Education D III Orthotic Prosthetic.

Page 4: CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION - · PDF fileCHAPTER I INTRODUCTION ... (MPK)/Behior and Attitude Development SKS T P 1. ... 3. OP 103 Bahasa Inggris/English 2 1 1 4

Thus, Orthotic Prosthetic Study Program in Physiotherapy Faculty of

Polytechnic Surakarta facility and infrastructure as follow:

1. Three Classrooms for Level I, II and III which capacity is 40 students for

each.

2. Metal and nonmetal Workshop Room which capacity is 40 students

designed to be soundproof because aluminum/metal material brings

about high sound.

3. Assessment Room includes room for casting plaster that is near to water

resource and cesspool drainage system.

4. Clinic Room (for community services and research/development)

5. Gait Analysis/fitting room (needs parallel bar, mirror and stool)

6. Office Room (Chief of Study Program, Secretary and other staff)

7. Warehouse should be completed with control design because some of

Orthotic Prosthetic practical material need special treatment so that they

are not broken, such as:

@ Iron or metal can be rusty

@ Gyps can be hardened

@ Some chemical materials need AC room

8. Generator room to anticipate electrical needs.

9. Instructor room

10. Toolman room

11. Stockkeeper room

12. Room for the activities of Student’s Family Association.

13. Library.

14. Internet and Computer Laboratory.

Regarding with the limited area in Physiotherapy faculty that cannot fulfill the

aforesaid needs, Orthotic Prosthetic Study Program in Health Polytechnic

Surakarta needs area expansion in the old campus of Physiotherapy Academy

Health Department Surakarta located in Jebres Surakarta.

CHAPTER III HISTORY ON THE ESTABLISHMENT OF

ORTHOTIC PROSTHETIC STUDY PROGRAM

Provision and Development of Health Professional of Orthotic Prosthetic in

Indonesia started with the effort initiated by the Late Prof. Dr. R. Soeharso in

Medical Rehabilitation in Indonesia. After the independence war, he cared for

many victims who were being disabled by the war, though they were in productive

age. He had an idea of producing imitated hand and foot so that they could be

active again in the community by establishing “Rehabilitation Centrum” in Solo.

In developing Medical Rehabilitation besides Physiotherapist and Orthotist

Prothetist, he involved Occupational Therapist, medical social professional and

psychologist. At the time, psychologist and medial social professional got formal

education. Thus, he established formal education for pyhsiotherapist, which

started with education for physiotherapist assistant, then changed to

Physiotherapy Academy since 1964.

Education for Occupational Therapist had been started since 1994. It was

established by Dr. Handojo Tjandrakusuma who was the Director of Physiotherapy

Academy Surakarta.

The campus that was officially inaugurated by Indonesian Minister of Health

in 1989 designed as integrated campus especially for medical rehabilitation

professional i.e. Physiotherapist, Occupational Therapist and Orthotic Prosthetic.

However, recently, the programs established are only DIII Physiotherapist and

Occupational Therapist Faculty.

Efforts in establishing Orthotic Prosthetic education did not stop. In 1986,

there had been DIII Orthotic Prosthetic in Physiotherapy Academy though only one

class with 17 graduates.

In 2001, Dr. Handojo Tjandrakusuma (Director of Community Based

Rehabilitation-Development and Training Center/CBR-DTC), Sri Mardiman, MSc.

(Director of Physiotherapy Academy), Dr. Fadlan Ma’alip (Director of Orthopedic

Hospital Prof. Dr. Soeharso) collaborated with sponsor from Cambodia Trust and

supported by Secretary General of Health Department of Indonesia reorganized

the effort on establishing Orthotic Prosthetic in Indonesia. However, God had not

permitted. The unstable politic condition in reformacy period failed the plan.

The effort on establishing Orthotic Prosthetic nearly stopped, but God was

still on our side. Physiotherapy Academy/Health Polytechnic still tried to adjust and

finish the curriculum of DIII Orthotic Prosthetic based on the Letter of Ministry of

Health Professional Education on Guideline for Curriculum Arrangement.

This condition was seen by Director of Health Polytechnic Surakarta

(Including Chief of Physiotherapy Faculty) as an opportunity, therefore the efforts

on establishing Orthotic Prosthetic Study Program kept going.

By the hard working and effort of Director of Health Polytechnic Surakarta

and staff supported by Director of BBRSBD Prof. DR. R. Soeharso Surakarta;

Director of Orthopedic Hospital Prof. Dr. R. Soeharso Surakarta; Director of Warga

Technique Academy Surakarta; and Orthotic Prosthetic experts team from

Surakarta, thanks God at last D III Ortotic Prostetik program could be established

formally based on the Letter of Ministry of Health of Republic of Indonesia dated

12th January 2004 on Orthotic Prosthetic Study Program in Physiotherapy Faculty

of Health Polytechnic Surakarta.

Beside the other education program, Orthotic Prosthetic education is a

pride of Health Polytechnic Surakarta because it is the only Orthotic Prostethic

formal education in Indonesia nowadays.

Job training done after students finish all theory and practices required. It

is one of means to serve the community based on the mission of Ortotic

Prosthetic Study Program. The activity is done in certain subdistrict area in 10

days. During the job training, students give simple Ortotic Prosthetic services to

the community i.e. training and assistive devices production if needed. Beside

that, students also give information to client’s family and teach them how to

treat the client at home.

Students on the job training also have opportunity to give education on

health problems or rehabilitation to the community through meetings. It is useful

to introduce Ortotic Prosthetic to the community because it is a new issue in

Indonesia.

In spite of the aforesaid activities, there are also students activities

coordinated by Students Family Association of Ortotic Prosthetic Study

Program, which is a part of Faculty Senate in Health Polytechnic Surakarta.

Those activities are Education Seminar, Sports, Arts, and English Course,

which are done as extracurricular.
