We would like to extend our sincerest thanks to all of our wonderful supporters, volunteers
and participants who truly contribute to making each event a success. We strive to create
awareness about multiple sclerosis in our local communities through various fundraising and
education events.
The MS Society of Canada has appeared in the MoneySense Magazine’s review of Canadian
charitable organizations for the fourth year in a row. The review is currently only available
online. This year, the MS Society is listed inaccurately under ‘Hospital Foundations’ category
and the rating is based upon 2011 financial information, because of the timing of the survey.
The MS Society’s key messages are below:
Key Message 1: Every dollar that we raise is invested in people living with MS.
2011 Program Investments:
$9.8 million: research - research grants, scholarships, fellowships, and support of our
endMS Research & Training Network
$10.8 million: client services - including MS clinics, education programs, self-help
groups, recreational and social programs, information and referral services, financial
support for daily living or equipment needs, etc.
$6.9 million: public education and awareness - awareness campaigns, newsletters
$4.0 million: chapter and volunteer support and development - volunteer recruitment
and training, as well as chapter support from division and national offices
$1.7 million: government and community relations - educating all levels of
government about needed changes to benefit people living with MS and assistance to
clients dealing with local transit and accessibility issues.
Key Message 2: We raise much needed funds to remain a leader in driving MS
research in Canada and providing valuable client services including: education
programs, information and referral services, self-help groups and financial support
for daily living or equipment needs to people with MS.
We rely on grassroots events, personal and corporate gifts and the goodwill of Canadians impacted by MS so that we can continually offer financial assistance for mobility equipment and safety devices, support counselling and other programs that
address basic quality of life issues of people living with MS.
Over the past several years, we have experienced an increase in requests for services.
In 2012, over $10.4 million was spent on services for people affected by MS including: education programs, information and referral services, self-help groups,
social and recreation programs and financial support for daily living or equipment needs.
Key Message 3: Without the funds that donors entrust us with, we would not be able to increase our capacity to work with governments to create and improve policies
that will benefit people affected by MS. We work with governments to enhance employment supports and income security for people
with MS, increase caregiver supports, fund patient oriented health research and continue to build sustainable healthcare that is equitable and timely.
We steward every dollar to ensure it has the greatest impact on people living with MS.
In conjunction with our MS awareness campaign in May (1 Day in May), we launched an
online advocacy campaign with a focus on enhancing income security and caregiver support.
Additional information:
We are committed to lowering our cost of fundraising while we continue to provide
programs and services to people with MS and fund MS research. In 2012, our overall
cost of fundraising has gone down from $0.41 to $0.39.
In 2012, our administration expenses remained less than 7 per cent. As one example,
administration costs include things like the phones and computers we use to
communicate with people living with MS.
We invest in staff who are entrusted to deliver much needed services, advance our
government advocacy agenda and lead Canada’s largest MS research program.
With your support, respect and involvement, the Simcoe County Chapter remains committed
to the MS mission. Your input and ideas are important and invaluable. Feel free to contact us
by mail, email or telephone. With your feedback and the efforts of our membership,
volunteers, and community, we can achieve significant growth.
Together we can help support the fight to end MS
In dedication and service,
Board of Directors
MS Society of Canada, Simcoe County Chapter

Georgian Nurse Practioner-Led Clinic, Telemedicine service is now open to the residents of Barrie and surrounding area.
A Telemedicine appointment is just like a regular appointment only the specialist sees you over video as opposed to face-to-face. This is an effective way of decreasing
barriers to meet your health care needs.
You can have a video appointment with nearly any type of conultant; ie, psychiatrist,
surgeon, oncologist or a rheumatologist to name a few.
Videoconfernecing reduces your travel time and expenses because they are located in
Barrie at the Sadlon Health and Wellness Centre at the Georgian College Campus.
Ask your docotor if Telemedicine is right for you.
For further information contact Valorie Buawski, Telemedicine Coordinator - Georgian Nurse Practicioner-Led Clinic at 705-722-1581 Ext. 1412.

Volunteer Corner
Lead. Inspire. Volunteer. Today, you can make a lasting difference in your community by joining the movement to end
MS. Tens of thousands Canadians from across the country volunteer for the MS Society of Canada, supporting programs and services, fundraising events, public awareness campaigns
and social action activities. Volunteering with the Simcoe County Chapter will give you the opportunity to see firsthand how your contributions are making a positive difference for people living with multiple sclerosis in your community. We are always looking for people to help out
MS Summer Camp for youths aged 8-21 who have a diagnosis of MS.
This year, the camp will be held at Easter Seals Camp Horizon outside of Calgary, Alberta near the beautiful Rocky Mountains. The camp is fully accessible and staffed with trained counselors. A wide variety of activities include archery, swimming, river rafting, campfires,
hiking, arts and crafts, nature games, a ropes course, and much more!
Campers are also introduced to peer support leaders who are successful young adults living with MS. This gives campers the opportunity to meet older peers who have followed their dreams despite their MS diagnosis. The camp (and travel) is FREE thanks to the generous
support of the Slaight Family Foundation and Fondation Bergeron-Jetté. A promotional camp video, further information and the registration form can be found at www.mssociety.ca/camp.
