The effective use of verbal and nonverbal codes to persuade another varies greatly from culture to culture.

elaborate style: the frequent use of metaphors, proverbs, and other figurative language.
succinct style: there is a preference for understatement and long pauses
personal style: there is an emphasis on conversations in which the individual, as a unique human being, is the center of action.
contextual style: the emphasis is on the social roles that people have in relationships with others
instrumental style: communication is goal-oriented and depends on explicit verbal messages
Affective styles : are more emotional and require sensitivity to the underlying meanings in both the verbal and nonverbal code systems.

Types of Interpersonal Relationships Strangers: someone whom you do not
know and who is therefore unfamiliar to you
Acquaintances : someone you know, but only casually.
Friends : a friend is someone you know well, someone you like, and someone with whom you feel a close personal bond.

Dimensions of interpersonal relationships
1. Control: status or social dominance.
2. Affiliation: is an evaluative component that indicates a person's willingness to approach or avoid others.
3. Activation : the ways people react to the world around them.
The changing dynamics in interpersonal relationships are due to people's attempts to maintain a sense of balance in the needs. These contradictions in relationships, called "dialectics"

Face Face is the favorable social impression that a
person wants others to have of him or her, it involves a claim for respect and dignity from others
Facework refers to the actions people take to deal with their own and others‘ face needs.
Types of face:
Control face is concerned with individual requirements for
freedom and personal authority Approval face is concerned with
individual requirements for affiliation and social contact Admiration face is concerned with
individual needs for displays of respect from others
Improving Intercultural Relationships Learn about the other cultures, a little bit of
research will help you understand better the world.
Be prepared to feel uncertainty and anxiety when you are dealing with something you can’t control or know.
Open up so people from other cultures can understand you better and even learn from you.
Always try to put yourself in both sides so you can have a broader image of the situations.
