Three General Functions:

Sensory, Integrative, and Motor

1) Sensory function

Sensory receptors at ends of peripheral neurons

gather info by detecting change

External: light, sound

Internal: temperature, oxygen

Convert info into nerve impulses

Divisions of Autonomic NS

1) Sympathetic – prepares body for energy

expending, stressful, or emergency situations

“flight or fight”

Ex: increases breathing and heart rates

2) Parasympathetic – operates under normal

control

Brings body back to normal after emergency

“rest and digest”
