• England – Land of the Angles–Anglo Saxons (Germanic Tribe)

• Henry II– Justices to enforce the law–Common Law – Legal system applied to all
of England–Royal courts instead of local
courts– Jury System–Grand jury (stand trial?)
• King John– Lost lands in France– VS Pope Innocent III– Fought over selecting a new archbishop– Excommunicated, England = interdict– John accepts England as a fief from Rome to save face,
pays yearly fee to the Church
• Magna Carta– Why? King John was abusing power (taxes
& imprisonment)– Citizens have certain rights– King must obey the law
• Due Process of Law– Freedom from arbitrary arrest
• Habeas Corpus– No one can be held in prison without being
charged of a crime
• No new taxes w/o the consent of Parliament • “Power of the Purse”
• Parliament– House of Commons (knights & middle class)– House of Lords (nobles and clergy)
