QuadrilateralsQuadrilaterals are any polygons which have

four sides. We will be looking at the following polygons:

Parallelograms, Kites, Rhombuses, Rectangles, Squares, Trapezoids, Isosceles Trapezoids.

Classifying PolygonsPolygons are easier to understand when we

organize them in to a family tree.

Page 4: CHAPTER 6 – Quadrilaterals

How are you at classifying things?Organize the following words in tree shaped

organizerDog, Mammal, Cat, German Shepherd,

Animal, Reptile Animal

Mammal

Reptile

DogCat

German Shepherd

This arrangement puts topics in order from large categories to smaller ones.

ParallelogramsParallelogram is a quadrilateral with two sets

of parallel sides

Why is there a rectangle included here?

What other shapes could also be displayed here?

Page 6: CHAPTER 6 – Quadrilaterals

RectanglesRectangles are parallelograms with four right

angles.

Page 7: CHAPTER 6 – Quadrilaterals

RhombusA Rhombus is a parallelogram with 4

congruent sides.

Why is there a square included on this slide?

Page 8: CHAPTER 6 – Quadrilaterals

SquaresSquares are parallelograms with 4 congruent

sides and 4 rights angles.

Page 9: CHAPTER 6 – Quadrilaterals

TrapezoidsTrapezoids are quadrilaterals with exactly

one set of parallel sides

Page 10: CHAPTER 6 – Quadrilaterals

Isosceles TrapezoidsIsosceles Trapezoids are trapezoids with two

congruent legs

Page 11: CHAPTER 6 – Quadrilaterals

KitesKites are quadrilaterals with no sets of

parallel sides and 2 sets of congruent sides which are adjacent to each other.

Note: There are many other quadrilaterals which also have no sets of parallel sides that we do not give names to

Page 12: CHAPTER 6 – Quadrilaterals

Quadrilateral Family TreeYou and a partner now have 10 minutes to

organize each of the quadrilaterals into a family tree. Use the following words: quadrilateral, parallelogram, rectangle, square, trapezoid, isosceles trapezoids, kite.

Complete the graphic organizer.
