• A map is a flat representation of Earth’s curved surface.

• To transfer the info on a spherical globe to a 2D map scientists make PROJECTIONS.

Azimuthal Projections

• If you placed a paper so that it touches the globe at only one point and then trace = Azimuthal Projection Map.

Conic Projections

• Imagine the globe was transparent and had a light inside…

• If you placed a paper in a cone shape over the top or bottom of the globe and traced the images= Conic Projection Map.

Reading a Map

• Compass Rose==shows the cardinal directions, North, East, South, West (generally North points upward. Note an actual compass points to Geomagnetic North)

• Parallels are side-to-side• Meridians are top to bottom• Use legend and scale to interpret symbols and

distance on a map
