What is the Preamble?• Introduction and statement of the purpose

of the Constitution• A mission statement

• “We the People” – government based on social contract theory •Main Goals• To create a better nation• To create a judicial system• Promote peace among citizens• Provide protection to citizens• Promote good life for the many• And make sure it lasts

Describe Article I.• Deals with the Legislative branch• States the powers & requirements of Congress• Congress• Senate• 6 year term• Must be at least 30

• House of Representatives• 2 year term• Must be at least 25

• Power to:• Make laws• Collect taxes & borrow money• Regulate commerce with foreign nations• Declare war• To make laws “necessary and proper”

Describe Article II (2).• Deals with the Executive branch.• States the power & requirements of

the president• Power to• enforce laws• Appoint ambassadors and judges to

Supreme Court• “Commander in-Chief” of Armed

forces• 4 year term• Can only serve 2 terms• Must be at least 35• “Native Born” citizen

rulings in one state must be respected in other states• Rights of citizens of one

state must be respected in other states• Ex. Marriage Contract
