CHAPTER 20 THE SOLAR SYSTEM1.  GEOCENTRIC a model of the universe in which Earth is at the center of the revolving planets and stars

2.  HELIOCENTRIC a model of the solar system in which Earth and the other planets revolve around the sun

3.  ELLIPSE an oval shape, which may be elongated or nearly circular

4.  CORE the central region of the sun, where nuclear fusion take place

5.  NUCLEAR FUSION the combining of two atomic nuclei to produce a single large nucleus and much energy,

the process by which hydrogen atoms join together in the sun’s core to form helium

6.  RADIATION ZONE a region of very tightly packed gas in the sun’s interior where energy is transferred

mainly in the form of light

7.  CONVECTION ZONE the outermost layer of the sun’s interior 8.  PHOTOSPHERE the inner layer of the sun’s atmosphere that gives off its visible light, the sun’s surface

9.  CORONA the outer layer of the sun’s atmosphere

10. SOLAR WIND a stream of electrically charged particles that emanates from the sun’s corona

11. SUNSPOT a dark area of gas beneath the topsoil that contains mostly clay and other minerals

12. PROMINENCE a huge , reddish loop of gas that protrudes from the sun’s surface , linking part of sunspot

regions

13. SOLAR FLARE an eruption of gas from the sun’s surface that occurs when the loops in sunspot regions

suddenly connect

14. TERRESTRIAL PLANETS the name often given to the four inner planets; Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars

15. GREENHOUSE EFFECT the process by which heat is trapped in the atmosphere by water vapor, carbon dioxide,

methane and other gases that form a blanket around Earth, THE TRAPPING OF HEAT BY A PLANET’S

ATMOSHPERE

16. GAS GIANT the name often given to the first four outer planets Jupiter, Saturn , Neptune

17. RING a thin disk of small ice and rock particles surrounding a planet

18. COMET a loose collection of ice, dust and small rocky particles, typically with a long, narrow orbit of the

sun

19. COMA the fuzzy outer of a comet

20. NUCLEUS the central core of an atom that contains the protons and neutrons , the solid inner core of a

comet

21. KUIPER BELT a doughnut-shaped region that stretches from around Pluto’s orbit to about 100 times Earth’s

distance from the sun

22. OORT CLOUD a spherical region of comets that surrounds the solar system

23. ASTEROID BELT the region of the solar system between the orbits of mars and Jupiter where many

asteroids are found

24. METEOROID a chunk of rock or dust in space

25. METEOR a streak of light in the sky produced by the burning of a meteoroid in Earth’s atmosphere

26. METEORITE a meteoroid that passes through the atmosphere and hits Earth’s surface

27. EXTRATERRESTRIAL LIFE life that exists other than that on Earth
