Chapter 2 : Algebra I

2.1.1 Writing Algebra Expression Discussions / Examples

At our level, algebra is to represent any unkownreal numbers (variables) using letters (a,b,c,...) andcaptured any relationship between the variables in

the form of an algebric formula  or an algebricexpression.

1.  A algebric formula  is a well established

relationship that is true for all circumstances.

Example of a formula :

Area of triangle = ½ base x height

Using alegbra we can write ,

2.  An algebric expression looks exactly the same

as a formula execpt that a formula is true in all

circumstances but an expression  is only true in

the given question

Example of an expression :

Peters ‘s age is twice Marry’s age

Using alegbra we can write ,

Common English Algebric Expression

add a to b

OR

sum of a and b

OR

total  of a and b

subtract c from d  OR

d  minus c

multiply e by f

OR

e  times  f

OR

product of e  and f

divide  g  by h

OR

e  times  f

Common English Algebric Expression

 x is twice of yor

 y is half  of  x

 x is thrice of yor

y is one third of  x

 x is n  times of y

x is one quarter of y

More complicated

statement

Algebric Expression

add 3 to the product

of p and q

Find the total cost of

 x apples and

 y oranges if each

apple cost $4 and

each orange cost $5

Mr Tan weighs 5 x kg Algebric Expression

He is 8 kg lighter thanMr Lim.

What is Mr Limweight ?

Mr Lim is 12 kg

heavier thanMr Tan’s wife

What is Mr Tan’s wife

weight ?

Mr Tan is twice asheavy as his daughterand five times asheavy as his son.

What is the

total weight ofhis daughter and son ?
